The Asian Games in Hangzhou will be remembered by India not just for the record number of medals its contingent brought from the showpiece but also for the athletes who explored the limits of their endurance to return home successful in disciplines which were hitherto out of their preserve. Here are some of the athletes who covered the nation, and themselves, in glory by winning the first-ever medals in their disciplines or reclaiming glory after several decades.

Athletics

Avinash Sable (3000m steeplechase): A record-breaking Sable became the first Indian man to win a gold medal in 3000m steeplechase at the Games.

The 29-year-old national record holder, who earned India its first gold medal in athletics, completed the race in 8:19.50 seconds. Sable also rewrote the previous Games record of 8:22.79 on way to the top podium finish.

Parul Chaudhary (5000m): Parul pulled off a heist for a sensational women’s 5000m gold and stamped her class to become the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games gold in 5000m race, adding to the 3000m steeplechase silver that she had won earlier.

The 28-year-old was behind Japan’s Ririka Hironaka in the closing stage but produced a stunning dash in the final 40 metres to claim the yellow metal with a timing of 15:14.75.

Annu Rani (Javelin): The athlete conjured up her season-best performance to claim the top prize in women’s javelin throw and become the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games gold in javelin throw with an effort of 62.92m. This was her second Asian Games medal as she had won a bronze in the 2014 edition.

Badminton

HS Prannoy, and the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, won India’s first singles and men’s doubles medals after 41 years. It was Syed Modi who won a bronze in 1982, while the doubles pair of Leroy D’sa and Pradeep Gandhe won a bronze in 1982.

Satwik-Chirag gold was a first for India at the Asian Games. For the men’s team, the silver was a first since 1986 Seoul.

Table tennis

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee’s giant-slaying act clinched a historic bronze medal after the Indian duo lost the closely-fought women’s doubles semifinal to North Korea.

The medal came after the Indian duo beat the Chinese pair of Meng Chen and Yidi Wang in the quarterfinals. In 2018, India made history by picking up an unprecedented men’s team and mixed doubles bronze.

Shooting

The team of Manisha Keer, Rajeshwari Kumari and Preeti Rajak combined to win India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in women’s skeet — a silver.

Anantjeet Singh Naruka too etched his name in the annals of Indian sports history by clinching the country’s first ever silver medal in men’s skeet individual event.

Young Sift Kaur Samra also stole the show with a gold medal in the women’s 50m rifle 3 position event — a first for India — with a Final World Record score to boot.

Canoeing

India’s Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam clinched a historic bronze medal in men’s canoe double 1000m event to bag the country’s second medal ever in the event in the Asian Games. In the 1994 Hiroshima edition of the Games, India had bagged a bronze in the same event through Siji Sadanandan and Johnny Rommel.

Archery

13-year wait ended in archery when the Indian men’s and women’s recurve teams surpassed expectations to clinch a silver and bronze respectively, their first medals since the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

The women’s recurve team of Ankita Bhakat, Simranjeet Kaur and Bhajan Kaur defied odds to clinch a bronze medal beating Vietnam.

The women’s team’s splendid show then rubbed off on their male counterparts as the triumvirate of Atanu Das, Tushar Shelke, and Dhiraj Bommadevara too returned with a silver medal, losing to South Korea in the final.

Equestrian

The quartet of Sudipti Hajela, Divyakriti Singh, Vipul Hriday Chheda and Anush Agarwall won India’s first-ever dressage team gold in Asian Games. It was India’s first equestrian yellow metal in 41 years. In the 1982 edition in New Delhi, the Indian team had grabbed three gold medals.

Anush Agarwalla won India’s first-ever individual medal, a bronze, in the dressage competition at the Games.

Sailing

Sailor Vishnu Sarvanan’s bronze was India first-ever medal in the men’s dinghy ILCA-7 event at the Games.

Sepaktakraw

India clinched their first-ever medal in women’s sepaktakraw at the Games with the regu team winning a bronze.

Golf

Olympian Aditi Ashok won a silver and became the first Indian woman to claim a medal in golf.

The curtains were brought down on a memorable Asian Games with the celebration of the athletes’ stupendous feats and China’s cultural heritage at a colourful and technologically mesmerising closing ceremony on Sunday. A festive atmosphere descended on the 80,000 capacity ‘Big Lotus’ Stadium in the 75-minute show of light, sound and laser with the athletes of the 45 participating countries bidding farewell after more than two weeks of intense sporting competition. The closing ceremony was a celebration of sports and culture, and it sought to realise a harmonic convergence of ‘Culture and Sports’. Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) acting chief Randhir Singh declared the 19th edition of the Asian Games closed in the presence of Chinese premier Li Qiang and other dignitaries.

“I declare the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games closed and as per the tradition call upon the youth of Asia to assemble in three years time in Aichi-Nagoya (Japan) to celebrate the 20th Asian Games there in accordance with the ideals of the Olympic Council of Asia.”

“May the youth of Asia ever celebrate the Asian Games in the spirit of brotherhood and for the good of humanity,” Singh said.

“Over the past 16 days, we have shared many unforgettable moments in this magnificent city. And it is time to say ‘Shay Shay, Hangzhou’ for a wonderful and memorable Asian Games,” said the veteran administrator.

“Asia and the world loves Hangzhou! You have been the perfect host – and the OCA will never forget this. I would like to thank the Chinese Government, the Chinese Olympic Committee, the people of Hangzhou and HAGOC for what you have done and ensured that the Hangzhou Asian Games were an unprecedented success.” The biggest Asian Games ever was brought to an end with China dominating the medals table once again, the 201 gold (along with 111 silver and 71 bronze) beating the 199 they collected at 2010 Guangzhou Games.

Japan (52 gold, 67 silver, 69 bronze) and South Korea (42 gold, 59 silver, 89 bronze) were second and third with India finishing at fourth with a record haul of 107 medals (28 gold, 38 silver, 41 bronze).

Thirteen world records, 26 Asian records and 97 Games records were broken during the Games, according to OCA acting director general Vinod Kumar Tiwari.

The stadium saw less attendance than the opening ceremony on September 23 but the crowd joined the athletes and volunteers.

The flag bearers of all the countries came out first before the other athletes and officials joined. Men’s hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was the Indian flag bearer.

There were around 100 Indian athletes and officials in the parade, as many of them had already left for home after the end of their respective events.

The organisers said 12,407 athletes from 45 nations competed in 40 sports at the Hangzhou Games, which were delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a sombre ceremony, the torch and flag of the first Asian Games in New Delhi in 1951 as well as the OCA flag was handed to the governor of Japan’s Nagoya-Aichi, the 2026 edition host city.

For the cultural programme, the giant oval-shaped LED floor screen that gave naked-eye 3D visual effects during the opening ceremony was not used. Instead, a ‘digital turf’ — said to be the first of its kind used in Asian Games — transformed the football pitch into an evocative garden with big cut outs of separate letters of ‘Asia’ at the side.

The ‘digital turf’, which is the fusion of technology and ecology, and the grafting of technology and art, was a large mesh with over 40,000 illuminated spots evenly woven in, covered the football field to turn it into a giant colour palette, where shifting images, such as starry skies, flowers and waves, were displayed in a glittering way.

A memory river flowed across the stage toward the end of the show, reflecting on all the hard work and thoughtful services provided by volunteers during the Games, before welcoming them to join the athletes in the final celebration.

The giant virtual torchbearer, who lit up the main Games flame together with Olympic champion — and 19th Asian Games gold medallist — swimmer Wang Shun at the opening ceremony, returned to witness the flame being extinguished, together with the volunteers and athletes.

The digital giant then bid his own farewell with an emotional gesture before disappearing from the show.

The main theme of the ceremony was the ‘Enduring Memories of Hangzhou’ with the carnival conveying the timeless friendship of ‘Flowers for Parting Friends’ and the aspiration of ‘The Lotus and the Osmanthus in Harmony’.

The Lotus and the Osmanthus in Harmony depicted the thousand-year tradition between parting friends and adapted this tradition in the realm of sports and competition.

Osmanthus is one of the most important flowers in China and the city flower of Hangzhou. It is associated with the Moon and is said to have magical self-healing powers.

The ceremony aimed at showcasing the exciting and touching moments of athletes throughout the Games, while representing millions of volunteers and citizens of Hangzhou as well as every person that made these Games possible.

By focusing on the people, it sought to highlight the people-to-people interactions and the spirit of Sports Without Borders.

Indian athletes touched the magical figure of 107 medals at the Asian Games with their blood, sweat and toil over the last fortnight to give the country an early Diwali gift, and a promise of a best-ever harvest at the 2024 Paris Olympics. With India concluding its engagements at the continental showpiece on Saturday as no athlete from the country is in the fray in a couple of events scheduled on the final day of competition on Sunday, the tally of 107 will remain etched in the collective memory of the nation until the athletes decide to reset it in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in 2026. India’s final tally in Hangzhou stood at 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze, a quantum leap from the 70 medals the contingent bagged at Jakarta in 2018. The tally had touched the 95-medal mark on Friday with a few assured medals on Saturday. But, surprisingly, the athletes bagged 12 medals on the last day of their campaign, clinching six gold, four silver and two bronze.

A look at India’s medals tally at the Asian Games over the years –

1951 – 15 gold, 16 silver, 20 bronze – Total: 51

1954 – 5 gold, 4 silver, 8 bronze – Total: 17

1958 – 5 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze – Total:13

1962 – 10 gold, 13 silver, 10 bronze – Total: 33

1966 – 7 gold, 3 silver, 11 bronze – Total: 21

1970 – 6 gold, 9 silver, 10 bronze – Total: 25

1974 – 4 gold, 12 silver, 12 bronze – Total: 28

1978 – 11 gold, 11 silver, 6 bronze – Total: 28

1982 – 13 gold, 19 silver, 25 bronze – Total: 57

1986 – 5 gold, 9 silver, 23 bronze – Total: 37

1990 – 1 gold, 8 silver, 14 bronze – Total: 23

1994 – 4 gold, 3 silver, 16 bronze – Total: 23

1998 – 7 gold, 11 silver, 17 bronze – Total: 35

2002 – 11 gold. 12 silver. 13 bronze – Total: 36

2006 – 10 gold, 17 silver, 26 bronze – Total: 53

2010 – 14 gold, 17 silver, 34 bronze – Total: 65

2014 – 11 gold, 10 silver, 36 bronze – Total: 57

2018 – 16 gold, 23 silver, 31 bronze – Total: 70

2023 – 28 gold, 38 silver, 41 bronze – Total: 107

If celebrated Indian grappler Bajrang Punia bowed out without a whimper leaving the country in shock on Friday evening, the smashing Indian men’s badminton pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty brought tons of cheers to the contingent on Saturday afternoon, while the men’s and women’s kabaddi teams regained their pride of place after slipping in 2018 Jakarta.

A controversy in the final against Iran apart, the Pawan Sehrawat-led men’s kabaddi team was simply on fire, while young archer Ojas Deotale and Abhishek Verma made it a gold-silver finish in the compound men’s individual event.

Archer Jyothi Vennam too had her golden moment on the country’s final day of competition, taking the top podium finish in individual women’s compound event and show the continental giants in the sport, South Korea, that India had well and truly arrived on the scene.

The men’s and women’s chess teams finally provided the silver lining to the country’s campaign later in the day as India had the fourth-best tally behind China, Japan and South Korea.

India’s fourth position is unlikely to change as fifth-placed Uzbekistan has 20 gold as compared to India’s 28.

On the back of a splendid show by the shooters (22) and track and field athletes (29 medals), who contributed 51 medals, India had already surpassed its best-ever show on Wednesday this week.

The Indian contingent won many surprise medals, the biggest being a women’s table tennis team bronze by Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee, who humbled the mighty China in the semifinals.

Parul Chaudhary’s sensational dash in the last 30 metres of the women’s 5000m event will also be remembered for a long time as the Meerut runner snatched a gold by edging Japan’s Ririka Hironaka in a close finish.

Javelin thrower Kishore Kumar Jena’s astonishing 86.77m throw that gave him lead over superstar Neeraj Chopra for a brief period in the men’s javelin event was another unforgettable moment.

Later Chopra won the gold, while Jena finished behind him to settle for a silver medal.

Canoers Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam’s historic bronze in the men’s double 1000m along with Ram Baboo and Manju Rani’s third place finish in the mixed 35km race walk were perfect examples that if athletes refuse to bow down to the hardships life throws, excelling in sports is possible.

“Yet To Achieve My Potential”: Neeraj Chopra After Winning Asian Games 2023 Gold https://artifex.news/yet-to-achieve-my-potential-neeraj-chopra-after-winning-asian-games-2023-gold-4459214/ Sat, 07 Oct 2023 12:25:07 +0000 https://artifex.news/yet-to-achieve-my-potential-neeraj-chopra-after-winning-asian-games-2023-gold-4459214/ Read More ““Yet To Achieve My Potential”: Neeraj Chopra After Winning Asian Games 2023 Gold” »

]]>

His cabinet might be brimming with titles but Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra feels he is yet to reach his full potential and has set sights on not only crossing the 90m mark but making it a new normal as he gears up for next year’s Paris Games. The 25-year-old from Haryana, who played most part of the season with a groin strain, won the World Championships title in August in Budapest, finished second in the Diamond League finals in September before coming up with a throw of 88.88m to defend his Asian Games gold in Hangzhou this week.

“I am happy that I pushed myself and ended with a season-best effort. But it also made me wonder if I were fit and 100 per cent in my technique then how long could I have thrown,” he said during a virtual interaction.

“So I have to find in myself what I can do, what mindset I can make that I can achieve my potential, because I feel I am still a lot away from that.” Claiming the World Championships crown and defending his Asian Games gold with a season-best effort despite injuries has been the most satisfying part, says Chopra.

“I am happy I won the world champion title and defended my Asian Games gold, so season was really good. But somewhere about distance, I felt I could have gone further.

“But I had injuries in between and I had to give up a few competitions but slowly I came back. But I am happy that I could win two titles despite injuries, which is a good thing.

“I had said earlier in the season that I want to finish off the 90m question, so sorry I couldn’t do it. Now, I guess I have given you the chance to ask me again about it,” he laughs.

Chopra has been carrying this burden of expectations of crossing the 90m mark ever since he returned with a gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. While he came close, his closest rivals like Anderson Peters, Jakub Vadlejch and Arshad Nadeem have crossed the 90m.

“Since 2018, it was a possibility to cross 90m. At the Asian Games, I threw 88.06, then I had an injury in 2019, then Covid happened but I managed to qualify for the Olympics,” he said.

“In 2021 also, I had good preparation. In 2022 and 2023 also I threw close with 88 and 89s. So I don’t know, I am also waiting for that. I mean 90m is not impossible because if I am getting close, I can go beyond 90m, may be 92m or 93m.

“So it is not a question of 90m, now I am consistent at one score, so my main focus will be to first cross the 90-mark and then stay consistent in that score.

“I have to think about how I can improve my physical strength, see how can I push myself further in competition. Next year, there is the Olympics, so probably I will push myself more mentally.” Chopra had a controversial start to his Asian Games campaign when his first throw, which seemed to have covered 85m, went unmeasured but he managed to defend the gold with a 88.88m throw in his fourth attempt.

Chopra highlighted the mismanagement at the Asian Games, saying it reflects badly on an Asian giant like China.

“There were many things which happened bad for us. China has hosted some big events like Olympics, world championships and Asian Games and I think it will have some effect because World Athletics must have taken notice of it and I hope it doesn’t happen again,” he said.

“It is always difficult to get into that zone and for me it was a season end, it was a long season. So it is difficult to stay stable.

“At least 15 to 20 minutes were lost while talking to the officials, I had warmed up, so my body had gone cold. So when you are in a zone and such things happen, it can take you away from your focus.”

The Indian contingent impressed everyone with their brilliant performances at Asian Games 2023 and finished with a historic haul of 107 medals. It included 28 gold medals – a record for India in the history of the competition – as well as 38 silver medals and 41 bronze medals. India were on the verge of reaching the 100-medal mark at the start of Saturday’s order of play and with gold medals in men’s and women’s kabaddi, men’s cricket and men’s doubles badminton, they were able to finish the Asiad on a high. On the other hand, Pakistan could only manage to win 3 medals at Asian Games 2023 – one silver and two bronze. The two bronze medals came in kabaddi and shooting while the silver medal came in the men’s team squash event where they were beaten by India in a hard-fought summit clash.

The Indian men’s kabaddi team emerged victorious after an hour of arguments to reclaim its Asian Games title, beating defending champions Iran 33-29 in a controversial final, which was temporarily suspended, on Saturday.

The women’s team survived by the skin of its teeth as it beat Chinese Taipei 26-25 in a dramatic final for the country’s 100th medal.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty earned India’s first-ever badminton gold medal at the Asian Games with a straight-game win over South Korea’s Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho in Hangzhou on Sunday.

World number 3 Satwik and Chirag, who had become the first Indians to win the Asian championships in 58 years in March this year, extended their sensational run with a 21-18 21-16 win over Choi and Kim, ranked 15th, to achieve their crowing glory.

It was also India’s first medal in men’s doubles in 41 years since Leroy D’sa and Pradeep Gandhe won a bronze in 1982 edition.

The Indian men’s cricket team clinched the gold medal on its Asian Games debut after their final against Afghanistan was called off due to rain, and the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side was adjudged winners by virtue of being seeded higher in the continental showpiece on Saturday.

Put in to bat, Afghanistan were 112 for 5 in 18.2 overs when persistent rain halted the proceedings at the Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Field, and the match never restarted from that point.

Coming into the tournament as favourites, a wounded Indian women’s hockey team rose from the shock semifinal loss to edge past defending champions Japan 2-1 and claim the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Saturday. The Indians, ranked seventh in the world, were the favourites to win the gold here but one bad match cost them dearly as hosts China thrashed them 4-0 in the semifinal on Thursday. The Indian women thus avenged their 0-1 defeat against Japan in the last edition of the Games in Jakarta in 2018. (Asian Games 2023 Medals Tally | Asian Games 2023 Full Schedule)

But the Savita Punia-led side left behind the disappointment and displayed commanding hockey to clinch its seventh Asian Games medal and fourth bronze.

Deepika gave India the lead in the fifth minute from a penalty stroke before Japan equalised through Yuri Nagai from a penalty corner in the 30th minute.

Sushila Chanu, a rare goal scorer, handed India the winning goal in the 50th minute from a set piece that went wrong.

India started brightly and went on the offensive from the onset.

The Indians pressed hard and that resulted in their first goal in the fifth minute through a penalty stroke, which was perfectly converted by Deepika.

India kept on pressing hard and secured a penalty corner but failed to convert the opportunity. The Japanese too threatened the Indians but the Savita-led side was upto to the task.

It was midfield tussle between the two in the second quarter with both sides managing a few circle entries but failed to yield any result.

Japan drew level at the stroke of half time through Nagai who converted a penalty corner.

After the change of ends, there was hardly anything to differentiate between the two sides. Both India and Japan were engaged in midfield battle with occasional entries into each other’s cicrrle.

After the change of ends, India continued to press hard and created a few chances but failed to pounce on them.

With deadlock still intact, the Indians went on full press in the fourth and final quarter and their efforts bore fruit as they managed to earn a few penalty corners.

India secured a penalty corner in the fourth quarter but vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka’s flick was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Eika Nakamura.

Vaisnavi Vitthal Phalke then missed a sitter from the the rebound from the following penalty corner.

India continued to mount constant pressure on the Japanese defence and secured three penalty corners in succession, the last of which resulted in the winner.

A rare goal scorer, Sushila was at the right place at the right time to scoop the ball in above the goalkeeper’s head after receiving a feed from Deep.

India then earned a few more penalty corners but failed to utilise them.

Just three minute from the hooter, India secured another penalty corner but but Deepika’s flick was saved by the Japanese goalkeeper.

Deepak Punia Outplayed By idol Hasan Yazdani In Asian Games, Indian Wrestlers Return With Six Medals https://artifex.news/deepak-outplayed-by-idol-hasan-yazdani-in-asian-games-indian-wrestlers-return-with-six-medals-4459128/ Sat, 07 Oct 2023 11:35:01 +0000 https://artifex.news/deepak-outplayed-by-idol-hasan-yazdani-in-asian-games-indian-wrestlers-return-with-six-medals-4459128/ Read More “Deepak Punia Outplayed By idol Hasan Yazdani In Asian Games, Indian Wrestlers Return With Six Medals” »

Hasan Yazdani expectedly proved too good for Deepak Punia, who settled for a silver after losing by technical superiority to the Iranian legend in the men’s 86kg category as India’s wrestling campaign concluded at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Saturday with six medals but without a gold. It was the second time that Deepak found himself up against his childhood idol Yazdani, the two-time Olympic medallist and eight-time World Championship medallist. In the 2019 World Championships in Nur Sultan, Deepak had reached the final on debut but did not wrestle against the Iranian due to a foot injury and conceded the bout, settling for a silver. (Asian Games 2023 Medals Tally | Asian Games 2023 Full Schedule)

The 24-year-old Deepak, known as ‘Ketli Pehalwan’, was perhaps overwhelmed as he could not find a single scoring move against Yazdani, who had more or less settled the final by taking a commanding 8-0 lead in the first period.

Yazdani finished the bout early in the second period to defend his title.

Meanwhile, Yash Tunir (74kg), Vicky (97kg) and Sumit Malik (125kg) crashed out of the Games without reaching the medal round.

Overall, India won six medals and the embarrassing defeat of Bajrang Punia on Friday was the biggest disappointment.

Sunil Kumar (87kg), Antim Panghal (53kg), Sonam Malik (62kg), Aman Sehrawat (57kg) and Kiran Bishnoi (76kg) were the other medal winners for India.

In the 2018 edition, India had won three medals, including two gold through Bajrang and Vinesh Phogat.

In the men’s 86kg category, Deepak was edgy in his close 3-2 win over Bahrain’s Magomed Sharipov in his qualification round but kept getting better with his bouts.

He, expectedly, dominated Indonesia’s Randa Riandesta, winning by technical superiority, and outgunned Japan’s Shirai Shota 7-3 in the quarterfinals.

In the last-four stage, he was up against a tough rival in Uzbekistan’s Javrail Shapiev but prevailed 4-3.

Yash lost by technical superiority to Magomet Evloev from Tajikistan after beating Cambodia’s Chheang Chhoeun in his pre-quarterfinal.

Vicky made an exit following his defeat to Kazakhstan’s Alisher Yergali while Sumit Malik was ousted when he lost by technical superiority to Kyrgyzstan’s Aiaal Lazarev.
