Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf and India skipper Suryakumar Yadav are likely to be fined 30% of their match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

While the penalty on Suryakumar is pertaining to his comments dedicating India’s seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in a Group-A fixture of the Asia Cup to the armed forces and victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, Rauf may be punished for depicting the downing of aircraft in seeming reference to the military conflict in May during Pakistan’s six-wicket defeat in the Super Four clash last Sunday (September 21, 2025).

Rauf’s ICC hearing was conducted by match referee Andy Pycroft on Friday (September 26, 2025). There was also a hearing against Sahibzada Farhan, who celebrated his half-century in the Super Four game with a machine-gun gesture, but it remains unclear whether the opener’s gesture will invoke a sanction.

Mr. Suryakumar pleaded not guilty to the charge and was apparently told not to make any statement that could be construed as political in the remainder of the tournament.

Suryakumar’s hearing was conducted by match referee Richie Richardson on Thursday (September 25, 2025). “We stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and their families. We dedicate this win to the armed forces,” the India captain had said at the presentation ceremony and the media conference after the match.

The Pakistan Cricket Board had officially objected against Suryakumar’s “political remarks”. After the second meeting between the two sides, the Board of Control for Cricket in India also made complaints to the ICC against “provocative gestures” by Rauf and Farhan.

India will face Pakistan in Sunday’s (September 28, 2025) Asia Cup final for the first time in the tournament’s 41-year history.

Handshakes, or rather the absence of them, have been in the eye of the storm ever since the denouement of the Group-A clash between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup last Sunday (September 14, 2025).

With the storm far from subsiding, the two arch-rivals will meet again at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (September 21, 2025).

This time, the stakes are even higher, for a win to kick things off in the Super Four stage will go a long way towards facilitating the path to the final on September 28.

In the aftermath of the first encounter, the quest for one-upmanship on the back of India’s refusal to shake hands with Pakistan’s players saw the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) demand the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft from the tournament.

PCB president Mohsin Naqvi’s contention was that Pycroft had prohibited both captains from shaking hands at the time of the toss. The ICC has categorically rejected that demand.

In the midst of all the off-field drama, the ease with which India brushed aside Pakistan in that first fixture has almost been overlooked. If the contest between bat and ball has to now return to the forefront, it will require Salman Agha’s men to show far more skill and shrewdness than they managed last week.

In recent times, the rivalry has been fuelled more by past baggage and public sentiments than riveting duels on the field. After India’s most recent rout of Pakistan by seven wickets, the head-to-head in the shortest format has swayed further in the former’s direction. In 14 contests, one of which was tied and India won in a Bowl Out, the Men in Blue have won 11 and Pakistan thrice.

For Pakistan to spark a reversal in fortunes, a way to negate India’s spin triumvirate will have to be found. At this venue last weekend, the side floundered on two counts: in addition to losing six wickets to Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy, it was also far too cautious with its rate of scoring, seldom exerting any pressure back on the Indian tweakers. It resulted in a subpar total of 127 for nine that the eight-time champion overhauled with 25 deliveries to spare.

While Suryakumar experimented with two specialist pacers at the expense of Varun for the inconsequential affair against Oman on Friday, India should revert to its combination of three spinners for the marquee outing. Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the Oman tie, will also return to spearhead the attack. In the batting department, Sanju Samson’s half-century versus Oman, though not his most fluent, bodes well.

Pakistan, on the contrary, has serious concerns to confront. None more so than the wretched run of Saim Ayub at the top of the order. The 23-year-old southpaw is yet to score a run in this competition, having been dismissed for three consecutive ducks in the preliminary stage. If not for his handy off-breaks, he wouldn’t warrant a spot in the team. The form of skipper Salman is another worry.

The boys in green need to place far more attention on fixing these issues. And perhaps not worry so much about the ritual of handshakes.

The teams (from):

India: Suryakumar Yadav (Capt.), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (wk), Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh.

Pakistan: Salman Agha (Capt.), Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Haris (wk), Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Faheem Ashraf, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Wasim, Salman Mirza, Shaheen Afridi and Sufiyan Muqeem.

Match starts at 8 p.m. IST.

“India is playing Pakistan, right? When are they meeting?”

The immigration officer at Delhi airport posed a quick query on finding out the purpose of travel to the United Arab Emirates. Geopolitical realities, in the aftermath of a four-day military conflict between the neighbours in May that followed a terror attack in Pahalgam, may have cast doubts on the Asia Cup in the months leading up, but now that the 17th edition of the continental event is getting underway on Tuesday (September 9, 2025), there can be no disputing the fixture that will occupy centrestage over the next three weeks.

As has been the case in multi-nation tournaments for the past decade, it is not by coincidence that India — the official host — and Pakistan have been drawn together in Group A alongside United Arab Emirates and debutant Oman. It means that Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will have to slug it out to be among the two teams from Group B, also comprising Hong Kong, that advance to the next stage. If things go according to plan, India will face Pakistan once more in the Super Four phase, with a third meeting possible provided both teams enter the summit clash on September 28.

Beyond the big draw that India versus Pakistan continues to be in the eyes of the organisers even though recent contests suggest otherwise, the Asia Cup’s survival has been helped by its flexibility since 2016 in switching between the 50-over and T20 versions based on the demands of the cricketing calendar.

The previous event in 2023, won by India, was held in the 50-over format ahead of the ODI World Cup that year. This edition, featuring eight sides for the first time in the competition’s four-decade existence, will be a T20 affair to facilitate preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan will take on Hong Kong in the opener at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

The Men in Blue, who won the T20 World Cup last year, will kick off their campaign against UAE in Dubai on Wednesday. After a prolonged break from national duty since the end of the Test series against England on August 4, India’s players will be eager to get back into competitive mode at a venue where they have fond memories of winning the ICC Champions Trophy just six months ago. That there is intense competition for places is distinctly clear from the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer in the 15-member contingent.

Based on recent evidence, there is no obvious challenger to India’s might. Sri Lanka was skittled out for 80 in a five-wicket defeat to Zimbabwe on September 6 while Afghanistan and Pakistan blew hot and cold in the just-concluded tri-series that the latter won. Bangladesh has interestingly got the better of both Pakistan and Sri Lanka of late, but it has shown a worrying trend of faltering in crunch situations against India.

If there is a ray of hope for these teams, it is that pre-tournament expectations don’t always play out at the Asia Cup. After all, there has never been an India-Pakistan final in all these years.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has backed the current T20I team to win the upcoming Asia Cup under Suryakumar Yadav’s “fearless captaincy”.

The continental tournament will be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28.

India, who won the inaugural edition of the tournament in the T20 format in 2016, are grouped with traditional rivals Pakistan, Oman and hosts UAE in Group A. Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

“This Indian team has the right mix of youth and experience, and under Surya’s fearless leadership, they can dominate Asia once again. His attacking mindset suits the T20 format perfectly, and if the team plays with the same intent, I have no doubt India can lift the trophy,” Sehwag said.

He was speaking as part of broadcaster Sony Sports Network’s ‘RagRagMeinBharat’ campaign for the upcoming tournament.

“This campaign beautifully brings alive the heartbeat of Indian cricket. No matter which part of the country you belong to, when India plays, emotions unite us. I could feel that same passion in the film, and it’s this connect that makes cricket so powerful.”

Suryakumar will lead a 15-member Indian squad in the Asia Cup with Test skipper Shubman Gill being his deputy.

All the matches will be held in two venues — Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

India will host the next edition of the men’s Asia Cup cricket tournament in T20 format in 2025 as a pre-cursor to the T20 World Cup scheduled in the country in 2026, the Asian Cricket Council stated in its Invitation for Expression of Interest (IEOI).

The Asia Cup is always used as a dress rehearsal for the global event and played in the format in which the World Cup will be held.

The 2023 edition, hosted by Pakistan Cricket Board, was held in ‘Hybrid Model’ as India refused to travel to the neighbouring country and played its matches in Sri Lanka.

The 2027 Asia Cup will be held in ODI format in Bangladesh as the 50-over World Cup is scheduled in South Africa in the same year.

The T20 Asia Cup in India and 50-over continental event in Bangladesh in 2027 will comprise of 13 games each as there are 26 matches allocated in the said period.

“‘Men’s Asia Cup Tournament’ means the biennial senior men’s cricket tournament organised and administered by the ACC involving designated Members, and shall include participation by the teams from Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and one Non Test playing Member of ACC selected through qualifying events,” the ACC stated in its IEOI statement.
