The Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team did not live up to expectations in the recently-concluded Asian Cup 2023. It was a great chance for the 1992 Cricket World Cup champions to prepare for the 2023 edition, but the side were knocked out of the Super 4 stage.  Despite having played in Sri Lanka extensively, where most of the match of the Asia Cup were played, before the continental event, Pakistan could not qualify for the final. They lost to India too in a Super 4 match. The Pakistan Cricket Board conducted a review of the performance recently.

According to a report by Cricket Pakistan, the meeting was presided over by Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of the PCB management committee. Pakistan captain Babar Azam, head coach Grant Bradburn and members of the technical cricket committee Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez were also present. Team director Mickey Arthur and vice-captain Shadab Khan also joined the discussion.

In the meeting, according to the report, “Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez conscientiously highlighted the shortcomings exhibited by the Pakistani team during the Asia Cup and posed several pertinent questions to the management.”

Interestingly, soon after, Hafeez resigned. he announced the decision via a post on X. “I decided to leave Pakistan cricket technical committee. I served as honorary member. I would like to thank Zaka Ashraf sb for giving me this opportunity. I m always available whenever Zaka Ashraf sb need my honest suggestions for Pakistan cricket. My best wishes for Pakistan cricket as always. Pakistan Zindabad,” he posted.

“The philosophy behind this review was to create an atmosphere of open discussion and develop consensus,” PCB chairman of the management committee Zaka Ashraf said in a statement. “The idea is to have everyone on board and debate about performances, identifying the problems and their solutions.” The review meeting was also attended by head coach Mickey Arthur, captain Babar Azam, vice-captain Shadab Khan and former skippers Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez. Dr Sohail Saleem briefed about the players’ injuries and “the way forward for players’ rehabilitation programs,” the PCB said. Pakistan pacers Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf both suffered injuries during their rain-marred clash against India in Colombo, with the former under doubt to play the World Cup. Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com “In a robust analysis, every aspect of recent team performance, player fitness, and future plans came into discussion with a view to bringing improvement to the side,” the release said. “There was an agreement on making a better approach and strategy on players’ workload. The importance of strengthening the bench was also emphasized,” it added.

Team India bagged their eighth Asia Cup title with a remarkable victory over Sri Lanka in the final match on Sunday. Asked to bowl first, the Rohit Sharma-led side bundled out Sri Lanka for just 50 runs, with pacer Mohammed Siraj stealing the show with his impressive six-wicket haul. Later, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan chased down the target in just 6.1 overs and took Team India across the line with ten wickets in hand. After the final match, skipper Rohit attended a press conference, where his one comment left all the media persons in splits.

During the interaction, Rohit was answering a question but he got interrupted by the sound of firecrackers, which were being burst by the fans to celebrate India’s victory. The right-handed batter waited for a minute and said that the fans should wait for India to win the ODI World Cup 2023.

“It gives us a lot of confidence to come here and win a tournament like this. Through the tournament we saw a lot of..” said Rohit when the noise of the bursting crackers interrupted him.

“Arey World Cup jeetne ke baad phodo ye sab..(burst crackers once we win the world cup)”, said Rohit with a smile as the media persons burst out in laughter.

Talking about the match, Sri Lanka opted to bat first but Siraj soon made them regret this decision as they were reduced to 13/6 after he took four wickets in the 6th over.

Kusal Mendis (17) and Dushan Hemantha (13*) swung their bats for a while, offering tiny moments of respite. Siraj ended with 6/21 in his seven overs while Pandya took 3/3 in 2.2 overs. Bumrah also got 1/23 in five overs as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 50 in 15.2 overs.

Ishan Kishan (23*) and Shubman Gill (27*) chased down the target in 6.1 overs without any loss of wicket.

India captured its eighth Asia Cup title and Siraj took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award. Kuldeep Yadav (nine wickets) was given the ‘Player of the Series’ award for his bamboozling spin bowling in the tournament. Shubman Gill with 302 runs in six games and one century and two fifties, scored the most runs in the tournament.

The Asia Cup 2023 was a successful campaign for the Indian cricket team as it claimed its record-extending eighth title and so was the case with KL Rahul. The wicketkeeper-batter didn’t have a good start to the tournament. He was making a return to international cricket after a long gap due to a thigh injury that saw him get under the knife, but a niggle forced him to miss the first two matches of Asia Cup as well. However, Rahul bounced back brilliantly with a 111 not out against Pakistan in the Super 4 match.

The right-handed batter ended the tournament with 169 runs across three innings at an average of 84.50. Impressed with his comeback, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised Rahul’s fitness.

“Very, very good to see him fit. We all knew what his quality is. He has proven it over such a long time. The only question mark would have been about his fitness and in that century knock against Pakistan, he showed his fitness because it was not just a question of playing a long innings, but also running between the wickets. And who are you running with? Probably the fastest runner in the game between 22 yards, Virat Kohli. He did that so well. And later on came and kept wickets for a major part. That 100 percent proves his fitness,” Gavaskar told India Today after India beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final of Asia Cup 2023.

Talking about the summit clash, Mohammed Siraj bowled a terrific six-wicket spell helping India eventually outplay Sri Lanka at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday.

With the help of Siraj’s 6 for 21 in 7 overs, the Rohit Sharma-led side bundled out Sri Lanka for 50 runs after skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to bat.

Siraj picked his first five wickets in 16 balls which is also the joint fastest in ODI cricket history. He also became only the fourth Indian bowler to claim 6 wickets in an ODI innings. Anil Kumble, Jasprit Bumrah and Stuart Binny are the other three Indian bowlers to do so.

Jasprit Bumrah landed the first blow before Siraj took over and didn’t let the opponents settle down.

In the paltry chase, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan comfortably took India home in 6.1 overs.

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team, one of the pre-Asia Cup favourites, could not live up to its reputation and were knocked out of the Super 4 stage. The Pakistan team were pegged back by injuries of Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah too. Though they fought till the end, Pakistan could not go over the line in a must-win match against co-hosts Sri Lanka, and were shown the door.

To make matters worse, according to a report of Pakistan media outlet Bol News, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi were engaged in a war of words after the defeat to Sri Lanka. According to the report, after the loss, Babar questioned the role of the senior players in the Asia Cup 2023 campaign. However, Shaheen interrupted him and said he should not generalise and not criticises those who did well. Babar then replied that he is well aware about who is doing well and who’s not. The report added that Babar, went to the press conference after the loss, and on his way to the hotel did not talk to anybody.

However, Shaheen has quelled the rumours with a recent post. on Tuesday, Shaheen posted a photo with Babar, along with the caption: “Family”.

Kusal Mendis‘ 91 and an unbeaten 49 by Charith Asalanka helped Sri Lanka edge out Pakistan by two wickets in a last-ball thriller of the Asia Cup to set up a final clash with India. Chasing a DLS revised target of 252 in the 42-overs-a-side contest in Colombo, Sri Lanka needed eight from the final over and achieved the target with Asalanka’s winning hit on the last ball. A raucous home crowd rejoiced but the result broke the heart of millions of fans awaiting an India-Pakistan final in the 50-over tournament, a prelude to the upcoming ODI World Cup.

The loss also hurt the Pakistan team players, especially their skipper Babar Azam. The team captain’s father Azam Siddique has revealed that Babar was not able to even speak afer Pakistan exit from Asia Cup 2023.

“Salam Pakistan. Pakistan played the whole match with half the players and lost on the last ball with a four of a flock. But in this match, I have been shown a total superstar bowler Zaman Khan, who was bowling very well even in high pressure. Win or lose game. It is a part of the team, but the team played the whole competition despite being in half,” wrote Siddiqui in a post on Instagram in Urdu.

Indian cricket team broke several records with a magnificent 10-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final on Sunday. The chief architect of India’s win was pacer Mohammed Siraj, who mercilessly ripped apart Sri Lanka’s top order in the title clash with six wickets to his name. Courtesy Siraj’s dream opening spell and vital contributions from Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, Team India bundled out the hosts for just 50 runs. Later, the Rohit Sharma-led side finished off the proceedings in just 6.1 overs.

Ever-since India registered the historic win, wishes from all over the world have been pouring in across all the social media platforms. However, before the final match, former pacer Dodda Ganesh lauded India head coach Rahul Dravid and called-out the fans for not giving credit to him for the team’s triumph.

“India on the verge of a thumping win today in the #AsiaCup finals. And, Rahul Dravid is still not trending on X. Well, only the blame goes to Rahul when the team fails, but when the team wins, he’ll be forgotten. Well, the kind of world we live in. I so badly want India to win the #WC2023 for the sake of Rahul Dravid. The unsung hero of Indian cricket #INDvSL,” Ganesh wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Rahul Dravid has been under the scanner ever-since he benched Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the ODIs against West Indies in July, in order to test the new combinations in the team.

After successfully winning the Asia Cup, Team India’s next assignment is the three-match ODIs against Australia, which will kick-start from Friday. On Monday, skipper Rohit Sharma and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad for the upcoming series.

Ravichandran Ashwin, veteran spinner and India’s highest Test wicket-taker among active cricketers, is set to play his first ODI since January, 2022.

The series is the final dress rehearsal for hosts India before the 2023 Cricket World Cup, starting on October 5. Ashwin is not part of the World Cup squad, but his selection has raised speculation.

Squad for the first two ODIs: KL Rahul (captain), Ravindra Jadeja (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

Squad for third ODI:Rohit Sharma (captain), Hardik Pandya, (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel (subject to fitness), Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohammed Siraj.

Mohammed Siraj was in the form of his life as he produced a devastating spell of pace bowling to guide India to the Asia Cup 2023 title on Sunday. Siraj finished with six wickets as the Rohit Sharma-led side defeated Sri Lanka comprehensively by 10 wickets. Siraj looked in brilliant from during the very beginning and he went right through the Sri Lankan top-order with four wickets in a single over. Former Indian cricket team opener Wasim Jaffer lauded Siraj for his effort and came up with a rather witty praise.

“Ok Google, play Mohd Siraj. Sorry, Mohd Siraj is unplayable!” he posted on X (formerly called Twitter).

His teammate Virender Sehwag also joined in with a massive praise from his side.

“Too good. 21 overs in the match and done and dusted. Mohammad Siraj was simply outstanding and we have peaked at the right time before the World Cup. Congratulations Team on winning the Asia Cup.”

Siraj got four wickets in one over to help skittle Sri Lanka out for 50, a total the Indian openers Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill surpassed in 6.1 overs for an impressive victory ahead of next month’s ODI World Cup at home.

Sri Lanka’s miserably low total in the 50-over contest left a nearly packed house disappointed after they witnessed just 116 minutes of play.

Rohit Sharma’s India dropped just one match in the tournament after they lost an inconsequential Super Four contest against Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka, who won the previous edition of the Asia Cup played in the T20 format, came in as underdogs and snuck into the Super Fours with a dramatic win over Afghanistan but went down without a fight in their 11th final.

Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav took home the Man of the Tournament prize in the Asia Cup 2023. He finished the event as India’s second-highest wicket-taker, with nine scalps in four innings at an average of 11.44 and an economy of 3.61. His best figures were 5 for 25 against Pakistan. “I don’t think a lot; I just read the wicket. It’s very important for me to get the length right, and keep bowling at the good length,” he said. “I also read the batter, as to what shot is he trying to play. I have been efficiently using my wrong one and flipper, and I’m gaining a lot of confidence from it.

“I have worked a lot (on the wrong’un) in the last one and a half years. The rhythm is something that breaks off quite often and takes time to get it back.” Kuldeep’s form had gone on a downward spiral in 2019, and it has taken him nearly four years to get his rhythm back.

“I’m lucky to have gained that rhythm back. It did take some time and wasn’t easy, but now, it’s going smooth and aggressive, along with the pace; enjoying it a lot.” Siraj’s awe-inspiring spell did not allow Kuldeep to bowl in the final. However, the latter was pleased to have bowled efficiently in the three matches where he bowled.

“I guess the way you (Siraj) bowled today, I’m glad that I did not have to bowl today. You deserve the moment. Also, if a team gets bowled out for 50, you always want the match to finish quickly.

“It doesn’t matter whether I bowled or not. I did bowl in two (three) matches, where I bowled well, and I am satisfied with it.”

Sunday brought in great news for the Indian cricket team. The Rohit Sharma-led side put up clinical show to win the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka in Colombo by 10 wickets.  A fairytale spell from Mohammed Siraj skittled through the Sri Lankan batting order on Sunday in the final of the Asia Cup. The 29-year-old pacer made history, not just for himself but for the country. Siraj became the first Indian bowler to take four wickets in an over in men’s internationals. He is the joint fastest to take 5 wickets in a match, but most importantly his performance helped India win the Asia cup for a record 8th time.

However, after the match, a rather funny thing apparently happened with the captain of the team – Rohit Sharma. He reportedly forgot his passport in the team hotel in Colombo, as the rest of the members waited for the bus to depart for the airport to return to India. Finally, a support staff of the Indian team got the passport back for Rohit.

The incident reminded social media of what Virat Kohli had said on Breakfast With Champions. In an episode of the talk show, Kohli had said: “Rohit often forgets things like ipads etc. Once or twice he has even forgot his passport. The logistical manager has now started to check whether Rohit has brought everything and only then the team bus departs”. It seems something similar might have happened on Sunday.

After speedster Mohammed Siraj’s fiery spell decimated Sri Lanka, the opening duo of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan scored a flawless fifty-run partnership as India won the Asia Cup for the eighth time.
Leading India’s fast bowling attack, Siraj ran through the Sri Lanka top-order in a dazzling performance in the summit clash at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday.

It took a little more than two hours for India to lift the trophy in style. Sri Lanka fans were stunned into silence by their team’s performance. The Men in Blue lifted the Asia Cup trophy after five years.

Siraj had a dream spell as the entire Sri Lanka team was back in pavilion in 15.2 overs for 50 runs.  Siraj took six wickets in seven overs, his best performance in ODIs.

Needing just 51 runs, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan made no mistakes and started with back-to-back boundaries off Matheesha Pathirana‘s over.

In the third over of the game, Gill sliced three successive boundaries off Pramod Madushan, taking India’s total to 32/0.

On the first delivery of 7th over, Kishan took a single and took India home with an assertive 10-wicket victory.

Jasprit Bumrah set the tone of the game by making his impact on the third ball of his first over.

Siraj followed it up with a maiden over to lay the perfect platform for a spell that left the entire stadium awe-struck.

On the first ball of his second over, Siraj sent back Pathum Nissanka for 2. The second ball clicked 143 kmph and Samarawickrama decided to play it safe.

The third delivery, however, swung sharply back into the right-handed batter, pinned his legs right in front of the stumps and sent him back for a two-ball duck.

Sri Lanka’s match-winner against Pakistan, Charith Asalanka stepped in to keep Sri Lanka’s innings from falling apart.

Siraj baited him and lured him to play the drive shot. Asalanka took the bait and the ball went straight to Ishan Kishan at covers.

With hat-trick on his mind, Siraj once again tried to go for the inswinging delivery to the newcomer Dhananjaya de Silva. A gentle push on the vacant side of the field sent the ball for a four.

The pacer came back on the next delivery, found a faint edge and carried comfortably in the gloves of Rahul.

Siraj completed an over in which he took four wickets, something rare in ODI cricket and more so in a title match.

However, he wasn’t done yet, nor was his ‘Sui’ celebration. He shattered the stumps completely beating skipper Dausn Shanaka and sending him for a duck.

This was the first time India took six wickets in the first 10 overs in an ODI match.

“Kick To The Rear End Not The Worst Thing”: Sri Lanka Coach Chris Silverwood https://artifex.news/a-kick-to-the-rear-end-is-good-ahead-of-wc-lanka-coach-silverwood-4399066/ Mon, 18 Sep 2023 10:25:07 +0000 https://artifex.news/a-kick-to-the-rear-end-is-good-ahead-of-wc-lanka-coach-silverwood-4399066/ Read More ““Kick To The Rear End Not The Worst Thing”: Sri Lanka Coach Chris Silverwood” »

Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood was disappointed by his team’s meek outing in the Asia Cup final but said it was a timely wake up call for his side ahead of the ODI World Cup next month. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 50 after India pacer Mohammed Siraj grabbed six for 21, and the visitors romped to a 10-wicket win here on Sunday. “We played very good cricket to get to the final. I think we have to regroup and put some confidence into the players.

“You know sometimes a bit of a kick to the rear end is not the worst thing before going into a big tournament,” said Silverwood during the post-match press meet.

Silverwood said the Lankan team needed to ask tough questions and try to move on from this defeat.

“It was a super bowling performance by India. We did not help ourselves either, and were disappointed with the way we finished. We have a big World Cup tournament coming, and we need to ask a few questions in the dressing room and move forward from this,” he said.

The Englishman underlined the importance of finding consistency especially as a batting unit.

“We are going to compete against teams like India, Pakistan and Australia (in WC) and we have to be consistently at our best.

“So, we need to find consistency in the batting. We bat all the way down to No. 7, and we have the experience. So, it is a bit of concern (lack of consistency) and we will talk about it,” he added.

Silverwood agreed that the injuries to some key players like Wanindu Hasaranga did not help Lanka, but cannot use it as an excuse for a defeat of this nature.

“We have had some injuries in the bowling department but that cannot be used as an excuse in the batting department.

“The schedule around international cricket is tough at the moment, we have to live with it,” he said.

However, Silverwood found some light in the emergence of young players like pacer Matheesha Pathirana and all-rounder Dunith Wellalage.

“Pathirana and Wellalage have really emerged in the international stage, and (Kusal) Mendis has come back to form.

“There are some good individual and team performances but consistency is the key, and then we can think of beating teams like India,” he said.
