Jonny Bairstow slammed an unbeaten ton as Punjab Kings (PBKS) pulled off a record chase in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. Bairstow, who had a horror start to the campaign, smashed 108 off just 48 balls as PBKS achieved 262, the biggest-ever IPL chase. The visitors achieved the total with 8 wickets and as many balls to spare. KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir was mostly calm on Friday despite the heartbreaking loss to Punjab.

However, there was one moment when Gambhir lost his cool and the incident caught the attention of the fans on social media. The incident happened after the final ball of the 14th over of KKR’s innings.

PBKS spinner Rahul Chahar bowled a shorter delivery outside off as Andre Russell rocked back to cut it through cover. However, Ashutosh Sharma made an dive to stop the ball inside the circle.

Ashutosh quickly threw the ball at the keeper’s end, but it was a bit wayvard as Russell quickly stole an overthrow. However, the on-field umpires denied KKR the run off the overthrow, saying that he had already called for the end of the over.

This left Gambhir a bit agitated as he decided to have a go at a match official, who was standing near the dugout. KKR captain Shreyas Iyer was also present at the scene.

The argument between Gambhir and the fourth umpire went for a while before the former KKR captain walked back.

Meanwhile, Bairstow, who clobbered nine sixes and eight fours, was named ‘Player of the Match’.

“We got off to a good start and that was key. They got off to a flier themselves so we knew we had to go ballistic in the powerplay,” Bairstow said after the match.

“When you’ve to chase 200-plus you’ve to take risks in the powerplay. Try and whack it as hard as possible,” he added.

Apart from Bairstow, Shashank Singh also impressed with the bat, making 68 not out off 28 balls with eight sixes and two fours.

Former Indian cricket team batter Aakash Chopra was not pleased with how Punjab Kings approached the chase and even criticised how the team used their in-form batter Shashank Singh during their loss against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. Chasing 193, PBKS lost four wickets quite early and it was an explosive knock from Ashutosh Sharma that took them close before falling short by nine runs. Shashank Singh has been the most successful batter for the franchise in this year’s IPL and Chopra believes that not playing him in the top order and just treating him as a finisher can be a big issue for the team.

“When your team is 14/4, it seems like the match can’t be won because you are too far behind, and your four main players’, whom you consider your main players, innings’ have ended. Shashank comes in such a situation and Jitesh (Sharma) was there with him.”

“I would want to say one thing about Shashank. The way he is batting, how did you decide that he is your finisher only, that even though he is batting well, you won’t send him up the order? What is the point? Someone who is batting well and has the temperament is not a finisher only. He plays red-ball cricket and is an experienced player,” he said on his YouTube channel.

Stand-in skipper San Curran praised Shashank and Ashutosh for their performances and pointed out that it can be sometimes disheartening to lose such close matches in the IPL.

“Another close one, I think this team likes a close one, but unfortunately another loss. Another incredible knock from the young guy (on Ashutosh), but another close loss. It’s very tough, you want to lose close games rather than getting absolutely thumped, but we’ve lost a lot of wickets at the start, the way the younger guys have taken the team so close is heartening (on Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma).”

“They have incredible confidence, you see a guy like Ashutosh having the confidence to play the sweeps and the big hits against pacers, it’s so great to watch them in action. It’s disheartening to lose close games, but there are a lot of positives in this team. We still have the belief in us, we believe we can turn this around, the sun will come up tomorrow and we will hopefully get on a winning run,” Curran said.

Former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody feels Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya did not use pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah optimally during the IPL clash against Punjab Kings which allowed them to fight back from a difficult position and come within touching distance of MI’s total. Bumrah was matchless in the game in Mullanpur on Thursday, taking the wickets of opener Sam Curran, Rilee Rossouw and the dangerous Shashank Singh to help MI win by nine runs. MI had set PBKS a target of 193.

The India mainstay bagged two wickets in the second over, dismissing Curran and Rossouw, but just when PBKS looked down and out, he was taken out of the attack, allowing the home team to claw back.

“Again, Mumbai leaning on him so much to turn their fortunes around. He bowled two overs early on and had the Punjab Kings on their back. But, interestingly enough, he didn’t bowl another over until the 13th,” said the former Australian cricketer on Star Sports Cricket Live.

“He’s at the peak of his powers at the moment. And that’s my point of where I think the Mumbai Indians let the Punjab Kings back into this contest. (Gerald) Coetzee and Bumrah for mine, and I’ll be interested to hear what the other fast bowlers think on this show. Should (Bumrah) have bowled again to be able to put Punjab completely out onto the campus,” he added.

Former South African quick Dale Steyn opined that MI’s frontline pacers Bumrah and Coetzee need support from other bowlers, given the rigours of the IPL. He hinted that an off-colour Pandya was not helping MI’s bowling department.

“We want to see them (MI) close out games early by bringing Bumrah back or Coetzee. But then they have to depend on guys like Hardik to finish off, who hasn’t been bowling as well of late and some of the other bowlers travelling like (Romario) Shepherd, they may struggle in the back end.

“Mumbai are in a situation now where they have to tactically figure things out, but they also need somebody to step up, their bowlers to step up and really help out Bumrah and Coetzee, because if they (MI) keep going the way they are, they might lose more points again.” Moody also felt that Suryakumar Yadav will have to play the entire duration of the league to regain full fitness after returning from an ankle injury and a hernia surgery.

‘Mr 360 degrees’ struck a 53-ball 78 on Thursday as he guide MI to 192. With the middle-order batter vital to India’s chances in the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, Moody felt the cricketer needs to get his peak fitness back.

“It’s important that he slowly works back into full fitness, he needs to be playing for the whole 40 overs and that would be great. Not that he bowls or anything but for his own peace of mind and fitness for that the preparation for what is beyond the IPL. It was a great innings today (from him).

Steyn praised PBSK batter Ashutosh Sharma for the sweep shot he employed against Bumrah, something which has not been used against the India quick too often.

“I mean, IPL never ceases to disappoint us with close games and creating new heroes… Bumrah bowls a no-ball, and the next thing Ashutosh goes down and plays that sweep that goes for six.”

Punjab Kings (PBKS) batter Ashutosh Sharma, who caught the attention of fans worldwide with his blinder against Mumbai Indians (MI), said it was his dream to hit a sweep ‘against the world’s best bowler’ Jasprit Bumrah. Despite Ashutosh’s heroics, who almost pulled off the heist for Punjab, Jasprit Bumrah (3/21) and Gerald Coetzee’s (3/32) superb spells coupled with a scintillating 78-run knock from Surya Kumar Yadav helped Mumbai Indians edge Punjab Kings by nine runs in a thrilling match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur.

Mumbai Indians survived a splendid Ashutosh (61 off 28) blitz after Suryakumar Yadav’s 78(53) had helped the visitors post 192/7. Chasing 193, Punjab were bundled out for 183 with Shashank Singh (41) and Ashutosh (61) scoring the highest runs for their team.

During his 28-ball stay at the crease, Ashutosh hammered seven maximums. Ashutosh admitted that he rehearsed the “dream shot off Bumrah” multiple times in the nets.

The 25-year-old took full advantage of the MI spearhead’s overstep in the over, dropped down on one knee, and swept the delivery for a six in the 13th over.

“It was my dream to hit a sweep shot off Jasprit Bumrah. I have been practising these shots. It’s a game of cricket so it’s very common. we have to focus on our process. When I was playing I had the belief to pull off a win,” Ashutosh said in a post-match presentation.

Ashutosh revealed his conversations with the team’s Head of Cricket Development Sanjay Bangar and said a “small statement” from him made a huge difference for the batter.

“Sanjay [Bangar] sir told me that, ‘you’re not a slogger; you play proper cricketing shots and you should focus on [honing] that’. It was that small statement and a show of confidence from him that has made a huge difference for me and turned my game. I’m now just trying to follow that,” Ashutosh said.

Punjab will look to return to winning ways when they take on Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh lavished praise on Punjab Kings uncapped batter Ashutosh Sharma for his valiant knock against Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. When PBKS were down and dusted, Ashutosh raised hopes of an unprecedented comeback with some quality stroke play. In the 13th over, Ashutosh smoked the ball into the stands with a sweep shot off MI’s star speedster, Jasprit Bumrah. His shots resonated with the likes of South Africa’s ‘Mr 360 Degree’ Ab de Villiers and India’s dynamic batter, Suryakumar Yadav.

“He plays like Suryakumar Yadav and it is not easy to hit Bumrah for boundaries the way he does. MI won the game but Ashutosh won hearts,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

Before creating an impression in the ongoing IPL, Ashutosh has faced a lot of hardships in his life.

Harbhajan turned back the clock and recalled the time when a Madhya Pradesh coach sidelined the 25-year-old after which Ashutosh went into depression.

“Ashutosh was rejected by Madhya Pradesh, he played a top knock and it is said that he was in depression. He got a job in the Railways and the best thing that happened was he played for them and struck a half-century in 11 balls. This is a record and it shows the potential of the Ashutosh. Ashutosh has said it on record about the trouble that was caused by the coach,” Harbhajan added.

Ashutosh made his way to the top on the back of successful seasons in domestic cricket. In 2018, he made his senior debut at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

In the next season, with 233 runs, which included three half-centuries, he finished as the second-highest run-getter for Madhya Pradesh.

But in the next year, he was sidelined from the team and didn’t receive any explanation for the decision.

“In 2019 I scored 84 runs in my last game for MP [against Puducherry]. Then next year, there was a professional coach who came in and he had his likes and dislikes. He did not like me and sat me out of the team,” Ashutosh said without naming the coach. “Main bada depression me aa gaya tha [I went into depression]. That was the Covid time, so only 20 people used to travel, and I used to stay back at the hotel,” Ashutosh previously said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

“I stayed at the hotel for one to two months. I was not even able to see the ground. All I did was go to the gym and come back to the room. I got really frustrated and slipped into depression. It was tough to come out of that. I kept thinking, where did I go wrong? I could not sleep for days. No one even said anything. I was driven out of the set-up without explanation. Those two to three years were pretty bad,” he added.

The 25-year-old raised PBKS from the ashes when they were down and out at 77/6.

He got PBKS close in the elusive chase, with three towering sixes off Akash Madhwal in the 16th over, bringing down the equation to 27 runs in 24 balls.

Ashutosh was caught off guard by a slower delivery from Gerald Coetzee in the 18th over. He ended the game with a score of 61 off 28 deliveries as PBKS suffered a nine-run defeat.

Punjab Kings found a new gem in the form of uncapped batter Ashutosh Sharma who hit some exquisite shots to almost take his team across the line in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Mumbai Indians on Thursday. With his 28-ball 61, Ashutosh took Punjab close to Mumbai’s total of 192 runs but his dismissal brought an end to the hosts’ chase of the target that looked impossible at one point of time. While Ashutosh hit 7 sixes during his stay at the crease, his finest attempt came against Jasprit Bumrah when he dispatched a yorker to the stands.

Ashutosh left Mumbai Indians bowlers rattled, smashing them all across the park. While he was expected to go after MI bowlers like Gerald Coetzee, Akash Madhwal and Hardik Pandya, it was his stunning sweep six against Bumrah that left everyone in awe.

Ashutosh Sharma’s sweep six against Jasprit Bumrah:

Even former India pacer Zaheer Khan admitted being stunned seeing Ashutosh’s six against Bumrah.

“But tonight looked like Ashutosh was in the zone and that shot, which he played off Bumrah. No one, I mean, no one we’ve seen can play that kind of sweep shot to Bumrah, anticipating that yorker, going ahead and then yet managing,” said Zaheer on Jio Cinema after the match.

“Well, I mean four down. Who would have given them any chance of getting back in this game? But these two guys, it’s just unbelievable stuff.”

“And they’ve already secured those two points for Punjab. Earlier, when both of these guys batted together. Shashank, obviously that time was a hero,” added Zaheer.

After the match, Ashutosh also admitted that he had practiced the sweep shot multiple times and it was his dream to execute it against Bumrah. In the game, hence, the PBKS star managed to fulfil his dream.

Ashutosh Sharma gave Mumbai Indians a mighty scare with a sensational 61 before the five-time champions scraped through with a nine-run win over Punjab Kings in the IPL in Mullanpur on Thursday. Ashutosh unleashed a flurry of sixes in his 28-ball knock which brought Punjab from the brink to near the finish line but his dismissal in the 18th over turned the game back in favour of Mumbai Indians. Punjab, who were left tottering at 17/4 in their chase of 193 , came back roaring through Ashutosh and Shashank Singh (41 off 25) before ending at 183 all-out in 19.1 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav (78) starred with the bat for Mumbai Indians to take them to 192 for seven.

It was Mumbai’s third win in seven games while Punjab’s slide continued with their fifth loss in seven matches.

Despite an early four-wicket burst from pacers Jasprit Bumrah (3/21) and Gerald Coetzee (3/32), MI once again paid a heavy price of being ordinary with the ball. Akash Madhwal gave away 46 for one wicket in his 3.1 overs.

Ashutosh produced a breathtaking knock, hammering seven sixes and two fours after Shashank’s counterattack brought Punjab back on track following early wickets.

The right-handed Shashank smacked each of his three sixes off leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal (1/26).

Ashutosh was adroit with his strokes particularly on the leg-side.

Harpreet Brar proved he is no mug with the bat either, as the left-handed tailender unleashed lofted hits in his vital 20-ball 21 with two fours and a six. At the top of the order, Prabhsimran Singh’s (0) poor run persisted when the right-hander edged one behind to be caught by a diving Ishan Kishan, with Coetzee redeeming himself after a poor start with the ball.

Bumrah put Mumbai Indians in complete command with twin strikes in his opening over.

On his fourth delivery, the ace pacer fired a vicious in-swinging yorker which left Rilee Rossouw (0) nearly toppling over with his off and middle stump uprooted.

Later in the over, a smart review against an on-field call for a wide resulted in Bumrah bagging his second wicket off an innocuous delivery.

This one, fired down the leg, had the ball kissing Sam Curran’s (6) bat before settling into Ishan Kishan’s glove, which was confirmed by the DRS review.

Coetzee then piled further misery on fallible Punjab as he bounced out Liam Livingstone (1).

Earlier, Suryakumar and Tilak Varma (34 not out off 18) produced gritty knocks on a sluggish wicket to fire Mumbai Indians to a competitive total.

On a typically low and slow surface here, MI batters struggled for timing yet garnered the highest total so far at IPL’s newest venue.

Rohit (36 off 25) and Suryakumar provided the bedrock with a sturdy 81-run stand for the second wicket before Varma and Tim David (14 off seven) found their mojo.

Playing in his 250th IPL match, Rohit brought up his 6,500 runs in the competition.
