Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem are two of the brightest javelin throwers to have emerged from Asia in recent time. In competitions, the duo has been known to push each other for more success. Off the pitch, they have been known for their bonhomie and camaraderie. They may be fierce competitors but have a healthy respect for each other. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and India’s Neeraj Chopra are javelin superstars in their own right and a symbol of perfect friendship.

Both Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra are getting ready for the upcoming outdoor season. While Chopra is currently training in Turkey, the 27-year-old Nadeem’s preparations have hit a ‘snag’. The Pakistani recently said he is struggling to acquire an international standard javelin for many years and has been “using one for the past seven to eight years.”

Chopra, the world and defending Olympic champion, is rather surprised to hear this.

In an exclusive chat with SAI Media recently, Chopra, who competed with Nadeem in the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last year, said, “It is hard to believe that he has been struggling to get a new javelin. Given his credentials, this should not be a big issue at all.”

Arshad Nadeem, who finished second behind Chopra in Budapest, was recently quoted in the media, saying: “It has now got to a stage where the javelin is damaged and I have asked the national federation and my coach to do something about it before the Paris Olympics.

“When I started off in 2015, competing in international events I got this javelin … for an international athlete aiming to win a medal in the Olympic Games, you need proper equipment and training facilities.”

Chopra, whose entire training and international tours are funded by the Indian sports ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme, feels that Nadeem is the pride of Pakistan and must be supported.

With a 90.18m throw, Arshad Nadeem had created a new javelin throw record at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to finish on top of the podium. It ended Pakistan’s 60-year wait for a CWG gold medal

“It can’t be that he (Arshad) doesn’t have the means to buy a javelin. He is a champion and must be doing some brand endorsements. I reckon he has earned a bit of money too. But having said that, his government can look at Arshad’s need and support him just like how my government is doing so.

“Additionally, Arshad is top javelin thrower and I believe that the javelin makers will be more than happy to sponsor him and provide what he wants. This is a piece of advice from my side,” said Chopra.

If all goes well, the javelin competition at the upcoming Paris Olympics could see a strong Asian field. Chopra and Kishore Jena will spearhead India while Nadeem, who finished fifth in the Tokyo Olympics, will hope to replicate another 90 metre-plus throw in Paris and pose a serious threat to a sport usually dominated by Europeans.

In December 2022, the Pakistani had a serious elbow operation in UK. Last year, Nadeem had a niggling knee operation done and skipped the Hangzhou Asian Games where Chopra won the gold. The outdoor javelin season starts with the Doha leg of the Diamond League in May.

Pakistan’s ace javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem on Tuesday pulled out of the final of the men’s javelin throw event in the Asian Games due to an injury. A press release from Pakistan’s Athletics team stated that Arshad, who took part in the first training session on September 27, complained to Dr. Asad Abbas that he had been grappling with persistent pain for several months after arriving in Hangzhou. “On October 2, he again complained of pain in the right knee and expressed a desire to undergo an evaluation to determine the impact on his ability to participate in the Javelin Throw event at the Asian Games,” read the release from Pakistan’s Athletics team.

The chief medical officer of the Pakistan Contingent recommended a comprehensive check-up. Arshad underwent a thorough medical examination, including a non-invasive test i.e. MRI at a local hospital here in Hangzhou.

The MRI revealed a chronic injury that he has been carrying and after consulting the medical personnel, Arshad, careful not to hinder his training for the Paris Olympics 2024, decided not to participate in the men’s final in the Asian Games.

The men’s javelin final in the ongoing Hangzhou Games was to be the stage for Indian Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Commonwealth Games champion to resume their rivalry.

Last week, Neeraj acknowledged that while all the focus and media attention would be on his rivalry with Nadeem during the men’s javelin throw final, he will be focused on competing with himself and getting better at his technique and throw in the title event.

“Whenever Arshad has competed with me, I have won. But my focus is always on giving off my best and not on who I am playing against. In athletics, you compete with yourself and push yourself to do your best. I am aware that there is a lot of focus on my rivalry with Arshad at the Asian Games as there are no European athletes in fray. However, my fight is against myself. I have to better my technique and throw. Rest, we will see,” Neeraj told media persons in Hangzhou earlier.

The final of the men’s javelin throw event in the Asian Games will take place on Wednesday.

Indian world champion and Olympic medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra acknowledged that while there will be some focus on arch-rival Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem as well during the men’s javelin throw final, his main focus is on competing with himself and getting better at his technique and throw in the title event. Neeraj, who had recently won India’s first-ever World Athletics Championships gold, will kickstart his Asian Games campaign in Hangzhou on October 4 with men’s javelin throw final. Arshad will be a rival to watch out for during the final.

“Whenever Arshad has played with me, I have won. But the focus is always on giving my best, not on who is playing against me. In athletics, you compete with yourself and push yourself to do your best. Yes there is some focus on India and Pakistan at the Asian Games as there are no European athletes, but my fight is against myself, I have to better my technique and throw. Rest, we will see,” said Neeraj to the media in Hangzhou.

Head to head, both athletes have faced off in nine international events together, seven times at senior level and two times at junior level, as per Olympics.com.

The first meeting of these two athletes was back in the South Asian Games 2016 in Guwahati, where Neeraj got gold and Nadeem took home a bronze. As of now, Neeraj has a 9-0 lead over Nadeem.

Despite Neeraj dominating overall numbers, Arshad is coming closer to the Indian ace’s performances since 2018 and could be a big threat to Neeraj’s supremacy. Pakistan’s Arshad holds a lead over Neeraj in terms of personal best throws, touching the 90.18 mark during CWG 2022, where he won gold. He piped then-world champion, Anderson Peters of Grenada, with this effort. Neeraj had missed the event due to an injury. It was only the second time after Chinese Taipei’s Chao-Tsun Cheng 91.26 m throw at the 2017 World Underside, that a South Asian athlete touched the 90-m mark.

However, Neeraj is yet to touch this much-talked-about 90 m mark, with his personal best of 89.94m at the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League in Sweden being a national record as well.

On throwing the 90-m mark, Neeraj said that he is looking forward to it himself, but is in no hurry to do so.

“I am very close to it. I want to hit that throw myself. I believe in the process. Whenever it will happen, it will happen. I am not in a hurry. I am happy with my consistent performances, this is my main focus,” said Neeraj.

Neeraj said he likes the fact that he has been so consistent for the last four years and added that he aspires to be consistent not only on-field but in training too.

“It is not about being consistent in throw, but also in training. Keep training well and work on your technique. This leads to improvement. Last year, I made two national records, it was nice. I made improvements. This year I felt good, but injuries proved to be a temporary obstacle. Feels good to be consistent,” said Neeraj.

Neeraj has won it all, the gold medals at the World Championships, Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Diamond League title too.

On coming to Hangzhou this year after being at the start of his journey back in the 2018 Asian Games, Neeraj said, “It feels really good (to have won it all). The atmosphere is nice. I am meeting athletes of other players. It feels good meeting them. In 2018, I won gold in my first Asian Games. I was just getting started back then. The final is on October 4, looking forward to doing well in it.”

Talking about having won it all, Neeraj said that he loves hearing it from the athletes and that they all believe that they can compete and win against the best.

“I love hearing it from athletes that they believe that they can win too. My message was that we could win too and compete with top athletes from Europe and the US (winning the Olympic medal) that we always considered tough. You can see the performance of athletes, they are doing really well. The central government, their TOPS scheme, SAI, federation etc are all working well for us. I would like to thank private sponsors. It is the effort of all that Indian sports and athletics are going up.”

The star javelin thrower remarked that he loves the feel of big stadiums and huge audiences.

“I like it when the stadiums are big and have a lot of public. I have experienced everything. I have done some of my best performances in small stadiums and some in big ones. My experience at the World Championships was nice, the stadium was packed. Now, it would be great here too,” said Neeraj.

Questioned on the secret of his consistency, Neeraj said, “Support from all over is a big cause. I have learnt from all the competitions I have played in. Self-belief is important. When I was small, I used to watch videos of international throwers hoping to meet or play with them. When you are working with passion, your dreams come true. I always had a passion for javelin and dreamt of playing with these athletes. Passion also helps you in progressing,” explained Neeraj.

Neeraj said that the focus is always on doing well in the first throw as it is a confidence booster and creates pressure on opponents.

“But in the previous World Championships, I was not able to get good throws and even this year, I committed a foul. One should keep himself motivated till the last throw because the game can change anytime,” he said.

On a concluding note, Neeraj said that he practised a bit in the stadium.

“Hopefully, it does not rain in the final,” he concluded.

Pakistan’s World Championships silver medallist javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem does not consider Indian gold winner Neeraj Chopra as his main rival, saying he competes with himself. Nadeem on Sunday became the first athlete from Pakistan to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, while Olympic champion Chopra won the gold. Asked if Chopra was his main rival in the World Championships, Nadeem said, “No. I myself is the only competitor to Arshad Nadeem. I did not think I was competing to win against anybody.” Chopra won gold with a throw of 88.17m while reigning Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nadeem took the silver with his season’s best throw of 87.82m.

Nadeem said he was happy at Chopra winning the gold.

“At the world level, two Asians finished first and second. Neeraj bhai won the gold medal and I am very happy. Sometimes he will win the gold, sometimes I will,” Nadeem was quoted as saying by ‘BBC’.

“I went to Guwahati in India for South-Asian Games in 2016 and won the bronze medal there. Neeraj got the gold medal that time. I also broke national record. As we played more competitions together, we became friends and it (friendship) became stronger.” Chopra’s mother had spoken on similar lines for Nadeem after her son won the historic gold.

“This kind of thinking takes a human being forward. There is a lot of talk in social media that India has done this, Pakistan has done that. But, this kind of positive thinking makes human beings closer.

“I congratulate his (Chopra’s) parents and his whole country.” After the event was over, a picture showing all the three medal winners together but Nadeem without the Pakistan flag went viral.

Asked about it, Nadeem said, “After the competition got over, I was sitting there, packing my things like spikes and putting them inside my bag. I thought I will keep all these things inside the bag and then hold the flag.

“The (Pakistan) flag was there but I was little late. While going there, the flag was a bit far. When I reached near him, I took a photo with him. After that I held the flag and took a round of the stadium.”

As India’s Neeraj Chopra stood tall on the top of the podium in the World Athletics Championship, accompanying him at the second spot was Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem in the Men’s Javelin Throw final. There wasn’t much separating the two athletes who have been competing against each other for years. While Neeraj remains the ‘Golden Boy’ in Indian athletics, Arshad has also brought many laurels to Pakistan with his performances on the international stage. In fact, Arshad’s uncle revealed that his ward often watches Neeraj’s videos back home, to better prepare himself for events.

“Our whole village was watching Arshad compete last night. Almost everybody knew that they had to go to work in the morning, including me, but I didn’t want to miss the chance to see my son win a medal at the world level,” Arshad’s uncle Muhammad Ashraf told Indian Express.

Although Ashraf initially didn’t understand what Javelin Throw was all about, he is elated to see the sort of laurels Arshad has brought Pakistan with his performances in the sport.

“He has done the village as well as Pakistan and the Asian continent proud. All his brothers and sisters were cheering when he won the medal. India da munda gold jeetya te Arshad hamesha ohre bare gal karda hai.(A boy from India has won the gold. Arshad often talks about him whenever he is at home).”

A part of Ashraf’s preparations also included watching Neeraj Chopra’s videos.

“When he was at home during the injury, he would talk about javelin and the similarities between tent pegging and javelin. He would tell us that it’s as precise as tent pegging and the right angle and velocity have to be achieved in javelin too. He would often watch YouTube videos and we would see the Indian boy on his mobile phone,” Ashraf further explained.

Things weren’t always the most comfortable for Arshad and his family, with the athlete barely managing to make ends meet with his earnings. His uncle revealed that he took care of Arshad’s diet by always giving him milk and ghee.

“We have seen days when I would earn 300-400 rupees a day and I had to support nine beings at home. But we made sure that Arshad and his siblings got milk and ghee. Even now, when he returns to the village after winning a Worlds medal, he will ask for a glass of milk and dishes made of desi ghee,” Ashraf revealed.

India’s ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj Chopra hasn’t just become one of the most decorated athletes in the country but also one of the most loved. It was Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem whom Neeraj had to beat in the final in order to claim to top podium spot. Despite there being an India vs. Pakistan rivalry in sports, Neeraj reiterated how fond he is of Arshad and the fact that he won a silver medal, makes him happy. Later, Neeraj’s mother also gave a priceless response to a reporter who asked her how she felt to see Neeraj beating an athlete from Pakistan.

A reporter asked Neeraj’s mother Saroj Devi in a press conference how she felt to see her son beating a Pakistani athlete. She won many hearts with her response, saying it doesn’t matter which place the athlete comes from.

“Look, all have come to play in the field. One or the other will definitely win. So there is no question of being from Pakistan or Haryana,”, adding, “It is a matter of happiness. Even if that Pakistani had won, there would’ve been great happiness,” she said.

Neeraj completed a full circle in his career, winning literally everything there was to be won. Like most international events he has participated in, Neeraj had Arshad by his side, competing with him for the top spot. But, like most of the previous events, it was the Indian who came out on top.

In a chat with the media after the match, Neeraj, in fact, said that he was happy that both India and Pakistan are coming up good in javelin throw, an event that has traditionally been dominated by European nations.

“I felt good that Arshad threw well. We spoke and discussed how both our countries are growing now. Earlier there were European athletes but now we have reached their level,” Chopra had said after the final.

With each passing global/continental athletics event, the rivalry between Indian Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem is becoming one of the most exciting match-ups in world athletics. Rivalries between athletes/teams from two countries who are neighbours and a shared history, have always been one of the most intriguing aspects of various sports. India versus Pakistan is no different. Be it in cricket, hockey or any other sports, this rivalry always has been in the limelight and dominated.

In the world of athletics, a notable India vs Pakistan duel was back in the 1960s between Indian track legend Milkha Singh and Pakistan’s Abdul Khaliq. The rivalry between Neeraj and Arshad is also slowly gaining a lot of steam.

Neeraj has become a household name with his on-field exploits, having won everything gold this sport had to offer him at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Diamond League and finally the World Athletics Championships. His efforts have put Indian athletics on map.

While Arshad’s cabinet of medals/trophies is not as big as Neeraj, he is still the first Pakistani athlete to secure a World Championships medal, receiving a silver yesterday with Neeraj getting a historic gold. Less than a meter was the difference between Neeraj’s best throw of 88.17 m and Arshad’s best effort of 87.82 m. Nadeem had also ended Pakistan’s 60-year wait for a CWG gold last year in Birmingham.

Head to head, both athletes have faced off in nine international events together, seven times at senior level and two times at junior level, as per Olympics.com.

The first meeting of these two athletes was back in the South Asian Games 2016 in Guwahati, where Neeraj got a gold and Nadeem took home a bronze. As of now, Neeraj has a 9-0 lead over Nadeem.

Despite Neeraj dominating overall numbers, Arshad is coming closer to the Indian ace’s performances since 2018 and could be a big threat to his Olympic supremacy next year at Paris.

Pakistan’s Arshad holds a lead over Neeraj in terms of personal best throws, touching the 90.18 mark during CWG 2022, where he won gold. He piped then world champion, Anderson Peters of Grenada, with this effort.
