What did MS Dhoni tell AR Rahman at Chepauk?

That’s the big question in the minds of fans of Chennai Super Kings, who were treated to a big celebration at the recent ‘Roar 26’ event. And it seems that the conversation revolved around his Tamil melody track, ‘Munbe Vaa’ (from the Suriya-starrer Sillunu Oru Kadhal, sung by Shreya Ghoshal).

Post his musical performance at the MA Chidambaram stadium, Rahman sauntered across to have a quick chat with Dhoni. “He (Dhoni) told me that this particular Tamil song is his favourite track, and not just Suresh Raina’s alone,” said Rahman, in a special video posted on the Chennai Super Kings YouTube channel. “It felt very nice to hear that. I have never gotten the opportunity to spend a few minutes with MS (Dhoni); it was always a hi and bye in the airport. It was good to spend a few minutes with him. He was very kind and also spoke with my son (AR Ameen).”

With all eyes on the upcoming IPL 2026, there’s a lot of anticipation on how the Chennai Super Kings – which now has a few exciting new names in its squad, like Sanju Samson – will fare. On the team’s popularity, Rahman said, “When I was in South Africa, they recognised me by remarking, ‘Oh, you are from the land of CSK.’ Cricket and music go beyond borders. I’m happy that things like these make people excited and that there is collective joy and unity in mundane lives. It was an incredible night performing at the Chepauk stadium for the fans; it felt totally different from my other concerts, dedicating certain songs to the cricket players.”

Chepauk was wrapped in a cricketing time capsule – one where the past and the present met.

The hallowed MA Chidambaram cricket ground has seen thrilling sporting clashes, thanks to it hosting some great India and Chennai Super Kings matches. But Sunday evening was about something different: celebrating what the men in yellow have meant to Chennaiites over the years.

It was, in many ways, a pat on the back for the 20,000 people assembled to witness ‘Roar 26’. A sea of yellow engulfed Chepauk as passionate fans brought out the whistles — not just for this curtain raiser for the upcoming IPL 2026, but also for a musical concert by AR Rahman. Here, key highlights from the ‘Roar 26’ event, held at Chepauk on Sunday evening:

Nostalgia stirred

Other cities have cricket franchises. Chennai has an emotion — the Chennai Super Kings. One to which every player returns, years after moving away from cricket, and some even a decade after moving on to other franchises. That probably explains why players like Mutthiah Muralidharan, Joginder Sharma, Murali Vijay, Harbhajan Singh, Dwayne Bravo and Michael Hussey — few of the names that have contributed significantly to the success of the team over the years — lined up to have a friendly cricketing clash with the current CSK squad.

Watching the OG squad in action got every cricketing fan in the stadium go down memory lane. “These players were an integral part of my growing-up years,” says Rakesh M, a fan from Ashok Nagar, “As fans, we now back different players, but when you look back at our franchise’s history, these are the OG stars that started the fandom.” With veteran Muralidharan bowling to the current sensation, Sanju Samson, even as MS Dhoni crouched low behind the stumps, Chennai slipped into a different decade.

Chinna Thala’ bonds with ‘Thala’

If the city took on to MS Dhoni in a big way, even calling him ‘Thala’ wherever he went, his trusted lieutenant was none other than ‘Chinna Thala’ Suresh Raina. Chennai’s love affair with Raina — fondly dubbed Mr IPL — has lasted several years and the loud cheers he received at the ground, something that spectators usually reserve only for Dhoni, showcased how much he means to the city.

Along with Matthew Hayden, Raina was inducted into the franchise’s first-ever Hall of Fame. Part of four IPL-winning CSK squads in the past, Raina stated, “CSK is the best franchise and they have the best fans in the world. The crowd here is very knowledgeable — they know their cricket — and have been so supportive to the team over the years; that’s why we got all those trophies.”

Practice makes perfect

In 2018-19, when Team CSK practised at Chepauk in the evenings before the commencement of the tournament, thousands of fans enthusiastically cheered them. The sight of more than 12,000 fans lining up just to watch a practice match had the cricketing community across the world in awe.

Sunday evening presented a similar experience, with the current squad of 2026, including the likes of Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Noor Ahmed, getting some time at the nets, which Chennai cheered with much fervour.

A different pitch

Post the cricketing highlights and nostalgia, the stage was set for music. If Asal Kolaar and Paal Dabba got the crowd grooving to popular tracks like ‘Makamishi’ and ‘Paiya Dei’, the Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman, kickstarted with an energetic ‘Yuva’, following by Shweta Mohan-driven melodies (‘Nenjinile’ and ‘Munbe Vaa’), dedicated to Sanju Samson and Suresh Raina. The loudest cheers were dedicated to the popular ‘Nee Singam Dan’ tracks, with the cameras panning on MS Dhoni vibing to the track along with his daughter.

Actor Sivakarthikeyan, who said he was invited as a representative of CSK fans, turned into a fanboy as he excitedly shook hands with Dhoni, Sanju and posed for photographs with the team. “I live 25 kilometres from Chepauk – on the ECR – but whenever Dhoni walks in, I can hear the noise back home. I am just one of the many fans here who have been inspired by his leadership skills. IPL can be about entertainment, but CSK has always been an emotion and family,” said the actor, referring to Dhoni as Mufasa and current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, as Simba.

Singling out the latest CSK entrant Sanju Samson, affectionately called ‘Cheta’ by fans, he said, “We all know of the bonding between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Malayalam films are hits here. All the heroines from Kerala are superhits here. And now, you are a cricketer from Kerala representing Chennai… you are a blockbuster.”

The class of 2026 is new. Prashant Veer, Karthik Sharma and Sarfaraz Khan are some of the exciting new players to watch out for. . The faces may have changed, but the emotion and belief remains the same. This IPL 2026, the whistles are back.

Music maestro and Rajya Sabha MP Ilaiyaraaja on Sunday said he would certainly fulfil Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s request to set the Sangam literary works to music.

Responding to the Chief Minister’s request at an event commemorating Mr. Ilaiyaraaja’s 50 years in the film industry, the maestro said he was overwhelmed and overjoyed by the way the event was organised and could not find words to express his feelings. He said he was surprised by how naturally the Chief Minister recalled the literary works. “The Chief Minister’s words, that only I can do it, encouraged me further,” he said.

Mr. Ilaiyaraaja said he was deeply moved and could not believe that the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and other officials had made such efforts to organise the function. “I was overwhelmed and could not speak,” he said in a video posted on his X (formerly Twitter).

He had asked the Chief Minister why such an event was being organised for him. “Many people may see it differently. Why such love? Perhaps it is because of my music. Only he can answer. But I do not expect such felicitation. Still, he organised the event. Perhaps he considered my Symphony a great achievement. I believe, he must have felt it was the duty of the state government to honour a Tamil, who has gained worldwide fame,” Mr. Ilaiyaraaja said.

The maestro noted that the participation of actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth crowned the event, even though the participants did not speak much about the Symphony or their 50 years in the film industry. “But the event made my fans happy,” he said.

He added the complaints by Mr. Rajinikanth and Mr. Kamal Haasan — that he had composed his best songs only for the other — were proof that he had created memorable music for the both their films. He said he would organise another event to allow the people of Tamil Nadu to listen to the Symphony.

Rahman’s Praise

Music director A.R. Rahman, in a message, said Mr. Ilaiyaraaja had secured a special place for Tamil Nadu in the world of music.

“He is a combination of simplicity and Himalayan achievement. He is a genius who bridged the gap between classical music, Western classical, and folk music through his compositions,” he said.

Mr. Rahman said Mr. Ilaiyaraaja’s Symphony would serve as an inspiration to any musician striving for excellence. “I am happy because I grew up listening to his music. The event organised by the Tamil Nadu government to commemorate Mr. Ilaiyaraaja’s 50 years in film music is a celebration of all musicians,” he said.

AR Rahman married Saira in 1995.

Oscar winning composer AR Rahman and his wife Saira, after nearly 30 years of marriage, today jointly announced through their lawyer that they have “made the difficult decision to separate” from each other.

“After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira and her husband Mr. A R. Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate from each other,” read a statement from Vandana Shah and Associates, their lawyer.

The decision, said the lawyer, “comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship”.

“Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time,” the statement said, underscoring that the “decision comes out of pain and agony”.

“Mrs. Saira and her husband Mr. A R. Rahman request privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as they navigate this difficult chapter in their life,” the statement further added.

The music composer lamented that couple could not reach the “grand thirty” but hope hoped that there is meaning in “this  shattering”.

“We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter,” Rahman posted on X.

The couple married in 1995 and are parents to three children: Khatija, Raheema and Ameen.

In his Instagram Stories, their son Ameen wrote, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”

AR Rahman, who won the Oscar for his work on Slumdog Millionaire, was once dubbed “the Mozart of Madras” by Time magazine.

The musician, who started playing music at the age of five, got his first break with the 1992 movie Roja. It was a hit, and Rahman’s soundtrack led to him winning the national award for best music composer.

“How come you opted for an arranged marriage?” Simi Garewal asked the ace composer in 2012 on her popular chat show ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’.

“To be honest I didn’t have the time to go and search for a bride,” said a smiling Rahman, eliciting a chuckle from the host.

“I was doing all those films – Rangeela , Bombay and all that stuff. Was so busy in that, but I knew that was the right time for me to get married. I was 29. And I told my mother. I said find me a bride,” said Rahman

“Did you have any specifications?” asked Ms Garewal

“I want a simple wife. The one who won’t give me much trouble. So I could carry on doing my music,” Rahman answered.

Ms Garewal then reminded Rahman that he had asked his mother to find her a bride with “some education, some beauty and loads of humility”.

Rahman smiled and nodded in the affirmative.

Asked how they met, Rahman also revealed that his mother found Saira’s sister near a Sufi shrine and one thing led to another and soon they were married.
