Atletico Madrid blew the chance to claim the lead in La Liga with a 1-1 home draw against Celta Vigo on Saturday, but played most of the game with 10 men after Pablo Barrios’ seventh-minute red card. After champions and leaders Real Madrid drew 1-1 at Osasuna earlier on, Diego Simeone’s side were aiming to capitalise at their Metropolitano stadium. However Barrios’ early sending-off set Atletico back and Iago Aspas fired Celta ahead in the second half from the penalty spot. Atletico target man Alexander Sorloth rescued a point for the Rojiblancos with a fine strike in the 81st minute, keeping them a point behind Los Blancos.

“When we were left with 10 men it’s very difficult… the team tried everything,” Atletico midfielder Koke told DAZN.

“We defended well, we suffered when we had to. Obviously we’re still in the fight for the title.

“We have to continue and keep working, there’s still a long way to go.”

Barrios, who was also sent off in the first half of a Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen in January, flew into a reckless high tackle on Pablo Duran.

The Spaniard was dismissed in the seventh minute after a VAR review.

Atletico dug deep and kept Celta at bay in a first half with few chances of note.

The Galician side, with an extra player, had control of the ball but Atletico were happy to stop them from creating danger, with Antoine Griezmann chipping in with plenty of defensive work.

Celta goalkeeper Vicente Guaita made a simple save to deny Marcos Llorente, who could not get much power on a shot from the edge of the box.

The visitors took the lead when Robin Le Normand trod on Borja Iglesias’s foot and pointed to the penalty spot.

Veteran striker Aspas, 37, sent Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak the wrong way to put Celta ahead with his seventh league goal of the campaign.

Simeone turned to his bench for extra spark, bringing on Sorloth, Angel Correa and Conor Gallagher.

Atletico have relied on Sorloth largely as a super-sub this season and the Norwegian striker pulled off his favourite trick once more.

Sorloth overpowered defender Carl Starfelt and walloped home inside the near post to pull Atletico level.

Celta threatened in stoppage time but Atletico held on to claim a valuable point, even if they had hoped for three after Real Madrid’s draw.

“I’m very happy to get playing again (after injury)… we got a point at a very difficult place to go,” said Aspas, who last played in December.

“It’s true we had (many) minutes with an extra man, but we know how strong Atletico are. We’re a bit frustrated because we were close to winning.”

On Monday Barcelona, third, host Rayo Vallecano and can move level on points with Los Blancos if they win.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are looking over their shoulders in La Liga at in-form Atletico Madrid, wary of a letdown after taxing wins away from home in the Champions League this week. A 3-2 victory at Borussia Dortmund ensured Barcelona will advance to the knockout phase of Europe’s top club competition, while Madrid won by the same scoreline away to a previously unbeaten Atalanta. That win kept the holders in contention for automatic qualification to the last 16, but Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted the match drained a lot of energy from his injury-hit squad.

“It was a tough match because Atalanta demanded a lot from us physically,” said Ancelotti, whose side trail leaders Barcelona by two points but have a game in hand.

Vinicius Junior scored on his return from a hamstring injury in Italy on a night Kylian Mbappe netted his 50th Champions League goal before going off injured.

“We have to hang in there until Christmas,” added Ancelotti, who also welcomed back Rodrygo and is expecting to have Eduardo Camavinga fit again soon.

“The calendar is very demanding, we have a reduced squad and that doesn’t allow us to rotate players as much. We have to hang in there for the time being.”

Madrid make the short trip to Rayo Vallecano on Saturday knowing they can snatch top spot from Barcelona, for 24 hours at least, before next week’s Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar.

But they could be without Mbappe due to the hamstring problem he suffered on Tuesday.

“Mbappe has some discomfort in his hamstrings. It doesn’t seem serious but we’ll see,” Ancelotti said after the Atalanta game.

“He couldn’t sprint, it hurt him a bit and we thought it best to replace him.”

Barcelona host a struggling Leganes on Sunday attempting to arrest their domestic dip in form, with a run of one win in five games opening the door to their title rivals.

Atletico are three points adrift of Barcelona having also played a game less, and have won five in a row in La Liga going into Sunday’s home derby with Getafe.

Not far behind are Athletic Bilbao, whose 2-0 win at Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on Wednesday pushed them closer to the Europa League last 16.

Athletic, unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions, are going for a fifth straight league win away to Alaves this weekend, while Villarreal and Real Betis meet in a clash of teams whose results have tailed off recently.

Player to watch: Julian Alvarez

The Argentine is Atletico’s top scorer with 12 goals overall since his August arrival from Manchester City.

The 24-year-old left England seeking a new challenge after largely playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland despite his critical role in his country’s 2022 World Cup triumph.

Alvaraz set Atletico on their way to a 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava midweek with a terrific curling effort before Antoine Griezmann‘s double sealed the points.

“He’s a great player,” said Griezmann, who himself is in a rich vein of form with seven goals in his last five outings. “It’s a joy and a source of pride to have him with us and to be able to help him.”

Atletico coach Diego Simeone was able to celebrate his 700th match in charge of the club with a 2-1 La Liga comeback win over Alaves on Saturday. Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sorloth’s goals helped Atletico come from behind to triumph after Jon Guridi sent Alaves ahead with an early penalty. The win took Atletico provisionally second, two points ahead of champions Real Madrid, who visit Leganes on Sunday, and four behind leaders Barcelona who play at Celta Vigo later Saturday.

Atletico’s Argentine coach Simeone appointed in December 2011, reached a milestone 700th game across all competitions in charge of the club which he has led to La Liga titles in 2014 and 2021.

“Number 700 is a huge number, congratulations to him, the win is for him, the team, all the fans,” said Giuliano Simeone, his son, who helped Atletico step up a gear in the second half.

Alaves took an early lead when Javi Galan committed a foolish handball to block Carlos Vicente’s cross. Guridi sent Jan Oblak the wrong way from the spot to fire the visitors ahead.

Atletico failed to create many chances of note in the first half but improved after the break when he brought his son Giuliano Simeone on and the hosts began turning the screw.

The Rojiblancos pulled level after Abdel Abqar handled Sorloth’s header and Griezmann drilled home the resulting penalty.

Norwegian target man Sorloth sent them ahead in the 86th minute with a powerful finish at the near post after Rodrigo de Paul slipped him in.

Earlier Valencia scored an entertaining 4-2 La Liga win over Real Betis in their first match after devastating floods hit the region.

The win took the east-coast club provisionally 18th after their previous two games had been postponed following the disaster at the end of October which killed 227 people.

Los Che coach Ruben Baraja said he hoped to turn the emotional nature of the match into positive energy for the team to try to bring the fans joy.

Emotions ran high before the game as a minute of silence was held as players stood before a huge Valencia region flag and tribute banner in the stands.

Defender Cesar Tarrega, who was in tears ahead of the match during the memorial to the flood victims, sent the hosts ahead after a scramble in the box following a short corner routine.

Hugo Duro’s own goal soon pulled Betis level but the forward made amends in the second half with two fine finishes to put Valencia two goals ahead.

Diego Lopez smashed in a superb fourth for Los Che and although Chimy Avila pulled one back for the visitors, Valencia were able to hold on to a morale-boosting victory.

“The emotions, the atmosphere, the respect the Mestalla showed, it gave you goosebumps seeing how we paid homage to the victims,” said Valencia coach Baraja.

“The victory is dedicated to all of the victims and all of those affected. We are with them.”

France’s 2018 World Cup-winning star Antoine Griezmann on Monday announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end a 10-year career with his country. “It is with a heart full of memories that I am closing this chapter of my life,” France vice-captain Griezmann, 33, wrote on X. The Atletico Madrid forward made his France debut in March 2014 and has gone on to win 137 caps, a figure beaten only by his former teammate Hugo Lloris (145) and 1998 World Cup winner Lilian Thuram (142).

Griezmann is also fourth in France’s list of all-time leading goal-scorers with 44, behind only record marksman Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry and current captain Kylian Mbappe.

He scored in France’s 4-2 win over Croatia in the final of the 2018 World Cup in Moscow, having previously helped his country reach the final of Euro 2016, a tournament he ended as top scorer with six goals.

Griezmann was also outstanding for Les Bleus on their run to the 2022 World Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Argentina in Qatar.

His last major tournament will be remembered less fondly, as neither he nor his team found their best form at Euro 2024 despite making it to the semi-finals.

Griezmann’s last appearance for France came in a UEFA Nations League win at home to Belgium earlier this month.

The striker’s decision to quit is further confirmation that an era has come to an end for the French side.

Lloris and centre-back Raphael Varane both retired from international duty in the wake of the 2022 World Cup, with the latter quitting football entirely last week at the age of just 31.

Giroud stopped playing for his country in the wake of this year’s Euros in Germany.

Coach Didier Deschamps will name his next France squad this Thursday ahead of Nations League matches against Israel in Budapest on October 10 and Belgium in Brussels four days later.

Atletico Madrid Face Athletic Bilbao Challenge In Champions League Race https://artifex.news/atletico-madrid-face-athletic-bilbao-challenge-in-champions-league-race-5526240/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 04:54:24 +0000 https://artifex.news/atletico-madrid-face-athletic-bilbao-challenge-in-champions-league-race-5526240/ Read More “Atletico Madrid Face Athletic Bilbao Challenge In Champions League Race” »

Atletico Madrid have the chance to keep Athletic Bilbao at arm’s length in the race to qualify for the Champions League when the sides meet on Saturday in La Liga. Diego Simeone’s stumbling Atletico, fourth, have a three point lead on Copa del Rey winners Athletic, fifth. It will be a high-intensity clash in the Spanish capital, with Atletico still licking their wounds from last week’s Champions League quarter-final elimination by Borussia Dortmund. They suffered a humiliating 2-0 defeat at Alaves last weekend, increasing the pressure ahead of Los Leones’ visit to the Metropolitano stadium.

Ernesto Valverde’s side arrive in the capital knowing a victory would give them a huge chance of returning to Europe’s premier competition for the first time since 2014.

This season Athletic have put Simeone’s team to the sword on all three occasions they have met, scoring six goals and not conceding any.

Athletic thoroughly outplayed Atletico in December in La Liga, winning 2-0 at San Mames.

“You can’t win titles like this, you can’t win leagues… Bilbao were a lot better than us,” noted Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who was similarly critical of his team after the recent Alaves defeat.

“We’ve entered a terrible dynamic,” noted the stopper.

“If we don’t improve it will be a very tough end to the season.”

The teams met again in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, with Atletico on top but falling to a 1-0 defeat, their first at home in over a year.

Atletico fans argued that their opponents had enjoyed more rest ahead of the game and that an unusually rash challenge from Reinildo Mandava gave away the penalty which Alex Berenguer converted to secure Athletic’s win.

However in the second leg Athletic dominated and romped to a 3-0 victory against Simeone’s flailing Athletic.

Athletic stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Granada last week but Atletico’s defeat turned that into a point gained rather than two dropped.

After winning the Spanish cup for the first time in 40 years to spark days of wild celebrations, a comedown was almost inevitable but Valverde needs his team to knuckle down again in the final weeks to make it a better season still.

“Someone will have to get them down from the clouds and focus on La Liga, and that someone is usually the coach,” said Valverde after the cup win.

Veteran Raul Garcia is retiring at the end of the campaign while captain Iker Muniain has also said he will depart, and taking the Basque side back to the big time would be the perfect note to walk out on.

Player to watch: Artem Dovbyk

The Girona striker is the division’s top goalscorer with 18 and will look to boost that tally at Las Palmas on Saturday as his side kick on in their hunt for Champions League football next season.
