Hinting at the possibility of taking a coaching role for Team India in future, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh said that he would love to give back to the sport which gave him such an illustrious career if given a chance and added that coaching Men in Blue is all about team management. Harbhajan’s statement comes a week after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invited the applications for position of men’s national team head coach, with the tenure starting from July 1 this year and concluding on December 31, 2027, which will the year when the next 50-over Cricket World Cup will take place. Speaking to ANI about coaching Indian team, Harbhajan said, “I do not know if I would apply. Coaching India is about man management, not about teaching players how to drive and pull. They know it very well. You can give some guidance to them. Cricket has given me so much and If I get a chance to give it back, I would be more than happy.”

After India could not lift the ICC Cricket World Cup at home last year in November after reaching finals, the current head coach Rahul Dravid was given an extension till June, which also marks the month during which the ICC T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA will take place from June 1 to 29.

The deadline for application will be till May 27, 6 PM.

“The BCCI on Monday invited applications for the position of Head Coach of the Senior Men’s Team. Applications for the position should be submitted by 6PM IST on May 27, 2024,” said a statement from BCCI.

The selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates.

BCCI has put out the qualifications for a potential head coach as:

“Should have played a minimum of 30 Test Matches or 50 ODI’s or head coach of a full member Test playing nation, for a minimum period of 2 years; or the head coach of an Associate member/Indian Premier League (IPL) Team or equivalent international league/first class teams/national A teams, for a minimum period of 3 years; or Should have BCCI Level 3 Certification or equivalent; and should be below 60 years of age.”

India are placed in Group A of the T20 WC this year alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and co-hosts USA.

India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, followed by the marquee clash against Pakistan on June 9 at the same venue.

India will then play the USA and Canada on June 12 and 15 respectively.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj

Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.

Former India captain Anil Kumble feels Mumbai Indians (MI) icon Rohit Sharma might leave the franchise after the five-time champions finished bottom in the points table in this season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kumble feels other teams might be looking at Rohit as their captain next season, with mega auction to follow, and the opening batter might be tempted to begin a new chapter, having been replaced as the skipper by Hardik Pandya this season. MI lost to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday, ending their campaign with just 10 points and a wooden spoon.

Analysing their season, Kumble spoke in details about Rohit, as well as star players like Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav. With the mega auction set to take place before the next season, Kumble suggested that the trio might move away from MI.

“Let’s be fair. I’m sure there’d be a conversation, which is not going to be easy. Ideally, that conversation needs to happen after the World Cup. You don’t know whether Rohit will remain with MI; I’m sure he would want to go out. Teams will look for captains too. Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav are leadership materials, too. Bumrah has captained India. Even if the franchises want to keep them, the ball remains with the players. It all depends on how they are going to go about,” Kumble said on Jio Cinema.

Even before the start of the season, MI fans have expressed their displeasure over Hardik’s appointment as captain.

Hardik had arrived at MI this season with a great pedigree, having led Gujarat Titans for two seasons.

In GT’s first-ever season in the IPL in 2022, Hardik led them to the title, followed by runners-up finish last season after a loss to CSK in the final.

Rohit, on the other hand, needs no introduction. He is one of the two players to win the IPL six times, alongside Ambati Rayudu. He also led MI to five IPL titlles, including back-to-back triumphs in 2019 and 2020.

Rohit has been under the radar of a few teams, who might be looking him as their captain for the next season.

However, MI head coach recently revealed that Rohit is currently focused on winning the T20 World Cup for India.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh recently questioned the scheduling of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), considering that the T20 World Cup kicks off a week later after the final of the cash-rich league. Harbhajan suggested that the BCCI got scheduling all wrong and also stressed the need for playing at least 4-5 practice games before India’s opening game of the campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5. However, former India captain Anil Kumble had a different view on the matter.

“Yes, I believe it would have been better for them to have 4-5 games, you know collectively playing against some top team like England or Australia in America, just to get used to those conditions. But that doesn’t seem to be happening. But now, whatever small window we have, those two games, we have to make the best use of it. Going forward, it is a great suggestion. When you are playing a tournament like the World Cup or WTC, the team should play together for 10-15 days, it will be better,” Harbhajan had said during a discussion on Star Sports.

The legendary leg-spinner feels there’s no better way to prepare for the T20 World Cup than grinding it out in IPL.

“With regard to the Indian players, people who are not part of the playoffs will certainly be going early, and the guys who will be playing or who will be part of the playoffs will leave immediately after the IPL. So I don’t see any reason why the preparation should be different. I don’t think there’s any issue with that,” Kumble said in a different discussion on Jio Cinema.

Kumble suggested that playing 16-17 IPL games is more than enough to prepare for the T20 World Cup, and also pointed out that some of the Indian players will leave before the IPL final, especially with their teams out of IPL playoffs race.

“You can’t get a better sort of preparation for the World Cup than playing in an IPL where you played either 14 matches or 16 or 17. So, in that sense, you’ve prepared really well in this tournament in terms of any situation and under pressure you played. So it’s a good sort of understanding of where your game is and going into the World Cup,” he added.

If the game of cricket remains tilted heavily in the favour of batters, not many youngsters would be lining up to start bowling in a couple of years, fears spin great Anil Kumble, who advocated the need to keep biggest possible boundaries at IPL venues and use of more pronounced seam to restore the balance between bat and ball.

The score of 250 has been breached as many as eight times this season with shorter boundaries, flat pitches and impact player rule aiding the batting side.

Like the great Sunil Gavaskar, Kumble also feels that keeping the maximum possible boundaries length is need of the hour.

“It’s been really hard on the bowlers, especially the first half of the tournament. I certainly believe that you need to maximize the boundaries at every venue. Try and keep the biggest boundary possible in that venue,” India’s leading wicket taker across formats told select media in an interaction arranged by JioCinema.

“For a start, you could move the dugout into the stands. I know you’ll lose a few seats but so be it. Then the other aspect is to perhaps look at white ball to have slightly more pronounced seam so that there’s a bit more movement.

“We have seen that the ball stops swinging after maybe just the one over or even less than that sometimes. You need a balance between bat and ball. You can’t be running in and just going through the motions where in a couple of years you won’t have too many youngsters lining up to start bowling.

“Everybody wants to be a batter. You need the bowlers also to be a part of this game and the balance is very important. I expect that will also get addressed,” he said.

As per the playing conditions of the IPL, “The playing area shall be a minimum of 150 yards (137.16 metres) from boundary to boundary square of the pitch, with the shorter of the two square boundaries being a minimum 65 yards (59.43m).

“The straight boundary at both ends of the pitch shall be a minimum of 70 yards (64.00 metres). Distances shall be measured from the centre of the pitch to be used. In all cases the aim shall be to provide the largest playing area, subject to no boundary exceeding 85 yards (77.71 metres) from the centre of the pitch to be used.”

Decision to replace Rohit as MI captain was sudden

The call to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya has not worked for Mumbai Indians. Kumble feels that transition could have been completed next season when the mega auctions are due.

“The change that happened was a bit sudden. Obviously Rohit Sharma was a part of Mumbai Indians for the last 10 years and then led the team for five titles. Maybe in hindsight, maybe he could have sort of looked at Rohit to manage this year and then maybe Hardik coming in next year but the leadership obviously took that decision. But having said that, I don’t think they played good cricket,” said Kumble.

Hardik’s former team Gujarat Titans also could not make the play-offs but Kumble praised his successor Shubman Gill for his leadership in first year as captain.

“You can’t really judge (in one season), I thought he was pretty aggressive in his approach when it came to captaincy. He was always looking to take wickets and again for GT unfortunately a couple of injuries didn’t help. Shami was a big miss,” said the former India captain.

Kuldeep will be India’s number one spinner in T20 World Cup

India have picked four spinners in the T20 World Cup squad with Yuzvendra Chahal making a comeback to be the second wrist spin option alongside Kuldeep Yadav. All-rounder Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja also provide spin options.

“I don’t know who will be starting in the first game against Ireland. Kuldeep for sure. I don’t know what the pitch conditions are. I don’t think any Indian team has played in the US other than in Fort Lauderdale. So it all depends on the pitch conditions.

“I guess Kuldeep probably will be the number one spinner in that sense because he’s your wrist spinner. I’m sure there’ll be one wrist spinner who will play,” said Kumble who expects spinners to play a major role in the tournament.

“Didn’t Allow Challenges To Check His Progress”: Anil Kumble On Ravichandran Ashwin https://artifex.news/didnt-allow-challenges-to-check-his-progress-anil-kumble-on-ravichandran-ashwin-5256166/ Sun, 17 Mar 2024 15:11:23 +0000 https://artifex.news/didnt-allow-challenges-to-check-his-progress-anil-kumble-on-ravichandran-ashwin-5256166/ Read More ““Didn’t Allow Challenges To Check His Progress”: Anil Kumble On Ravichandran Ashwin” »

Ravichandran Ashwin’s entry into the 500-wicket club has delighted the legendary Anil Kumble who said the off-spinner’s immense success over the last decade stems from his desire to learn and ability to rise above constant challenges. At 516 wickets currently, Ashwin is the second highest wicket-taker in Tests for India behind Kumble (619), and the former India leg-spinner wasn’t one bit surprised.

“Ashwin has had as many challenges thrown at him. He hasn’t allowed a single one of them to check his progress. He’s been an exceptional match-winner for the country for more than a decade, and the consistency that he has shown is a great hallmark.

“That calls for utter and complete dedication to the cause,” said Kumble during a function organised by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to felicitate Ashwin for completing 100 Tests and 500 wickets.

Kumble said Ashwin has been able to tackle the huge amount of expectations placed on him by the ever-demanding Indian fans.

“In India, once you have raised the bar to a certain level, it isn’t easy to keep performing. The expectations in every game are unrealistically high. Anything less than five wickets is considered a failure. Although unfair to the player concerned, Ashwin has managed that really well,” Kumble said.

But those numbers are the result of Ashwin’s bloody-minded work on and off the field, reckoned Kumble.

“His numbers have been outstanding. There is no fun in stacking up the wickets if it doesn’t help the team win. He has an overwhelming correlation with his and India’s success. He’s seldom been satisfied with being very good or even excellent. Each day, he wants to be better than the previous one. That’s the sign of a great learner,” he said.

Kumble also praised Ashwin for his in-depth knowledge of the sport, especially of the opponent’s game.

“While we worked together for a year when I was the Indian coach, his thorough preparation and in-depth understanding of the players he was up against was a revelation.

You could see how he set them up, what speeds he bowled at them and from what angles he delivered the ball,” said the Bengaluru man.

The 53-year-old said Ashwin added a lot of value to the team beyond his bowling.

“Besides his bowling, he adds a lot of value with his batting and his input on the field. In white-ball cricket, he has never shied away from experimenting and has even bowled leg-spin. It’s not surprising given how much belief he has in himself, and I’m sure it will continue for long,” he detailed.

Kumble also traced a similar career path for himself and Ashwin.

“Many pundits believe there is a lot of similarity between Ashwin and my career. We have several common threads that unite us. We put pressure on the batters, the close-in fielders, the standing umpires, and in Ashwin’s case, the non-striker, and also the third umpire on some occasions,” he added.

Kumble started as a medium pacer before a local cricketer-official Yousef Motorwala turned him into a leg-spinner. Similarly, Ashwin had always wanted to be a top-order batter before taking up spin as his calling card.

“We both didn’t start off aspiring to be spinners. I wanted to be a fast bowler, and Ashwin had his sights set on becoming a top-order batter. But the elements conspired to thrust us into a journey of great adventure, and that is how I became a leg-spinner, and Ashwin became an off-spinner.

“So, welcome to the 500-wicket club. Congratulations, Ash. You have become a part of a very special club, and it’s great to have a fellow Indian spinner for company,” he concluded.

Ashwin moved our understanding of spin forward: Dravid

India head coach Rahul Dravid said Ashwin changed the complexion of spin bowling in the nation.

“I have been thinking about the legacy that someone like Ashwin will leave behind after he is finished. I believe he is not finished for a long time and has many more overs still in him.

“Just thinking about spin bowling, he has moved our understanding and knowledge of spin bowling forward, which is a great legacy. He has left the art and science of spin bowling in a much better place,” said Dravid.

The former Indian skipper said Ashwin will be an inspiration for budding players.

“He always has the desire to contribute to the team’s success, be it with the bat or ball or in the field or off the field. You have inspired a whole generation of young spinners,” he said.

Despite talks around his Indian Premier League (IPL) future, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) MS Dhoni is all set to lead the franchise in the upcoming season, starting March 22. The 42-year-old joined CSK’s preparatory IPL camp earlier this month ahead of CSK first game of the season against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on the opening day. Legendary spinner Anil Kumble, who shared the dressing room with Dhoni during the latter stage of his international career, has shared an interesting story regarding the former India captain.

Despite not playing him in the IPL, Kumble revealed that Dhoni was the first player to lift him. Kumble also recalled his time as the head coach of India when Dhoni was the captain of the team.

“I never played with MS in the IPL. When I played with him in the Indian team, he was the first one to lift me up. I guess he was the strongest of the lot to lift a heavyweight. It was a fantastic moment for me. I remember, when I was coach and he was the captain, we were in Ranchi for a one-day game, for an optional practice session, he didn’t need to come as Ranchi is his hometown. But he was there for the session. I said, ‘What are you doing? We still have a couple of days before the next game.’ He said, ‘No, I just want to be around.’ That’s him,” Kumble told Star Sports.

Drawing parallels between Dhoni and batting great Sachin Tendulkar, Kumble said that he won’t be surprised if the CSK icon would continue to play beyond IPL 2024.

“Sachin was the same. When I was with Mumbai Indians, Sachin had played around 25 or 26 years of cricket. But on optional days, he’d be the first one to be in the bus. These two guys, I don’t think can take a break. I won’t be surprised if MS continues to play for CSK, because that’s his optional session. He’s so passionate, he wants to be there,” he added.

The opening day of the IPL will see Dhoni going up against Virat Kohli in a Southern Derby between CSK and RCB.

Former Indian captain Anil Kumble is impressed by Virat Kohli‘s manic consistency and believes that his on-field aggression always adds to required intensity in any T20 team that he plays for. Kumble marked it as the biggest legacy of Kohli, who is the only player in history of IPL to play 16 seasons for only franchise — Royal Challengers Bangalore. “I would say consistency. I saw him in RCB when I was a part of RCB, that’s where he started his T20 career, after being a U-19 World Cup winner. From there, the transformation in his fitness, the way he wanted to play his cricket, and the performances he put in white-ball cricket,” Kumble told Star Sports.

“In Test cricket, we know his greatness. In T20s for India, his consistency over a period of time has been immense. The kind of aggression and attitude he brings on to the field help the team gain intensity,” said Kumble.

The World Cup winning England captain Eoin Morgan rated Kohli as one of the finest cricketers of the modern era.

“I highly regard him as one of the greatest of the modern era, across all three formats. When you have a player of that calibre in your side, it’s crucial that you’re constantly asking him to get the best out of himself.

“It brings a huge ceiling, as we’ve seen in the past. The level of inspiration and intensity that he brings lifts everybody within the group.”

Mike Hesson, who has shared dressing room space with Kohli during his tenure as RCB coach, offered a slightly different view of a calmer Kohli outside the playing field.

“You talked about the side on the field, but he’s very calm off the field. When youngsters come into the team or overseas players, he’d spend time getting to know them.

“This was after he was a captain (of RCB) as well. It’s not a captain thing. It’s a genuine want to share and communicate about things other than cricket,” said Hesson.

For Robin Uthappa, the combative instincts of Kohli makes playing against him a tough and an even more “annoying” experience.

Uthappa has played alongside Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore, and he has also been in opposition while playing for various other IPL teams such as Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.

“Playing against Virat isn’t daunting as much as it is annoying. As an opposition, he could be grating, in your face. You’d always feel like there’s a battle happening with a bowler,” Uthappa said.

But Uthappa said the ambit of that battle is not just restricted to Kohli the batsman.

“There’s an extra battle happening with an extra-cover fielder because he’s coming at you all the time. He’s throwing the ball and it’s whizzing past your head. You feel that pressure all the time,” he added.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will start their IPL 2024 campaign on March 25 with an away match against title holders Chennai Super Kings.

Indian cricket team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will play his 100th Test match as India take on England in the final game of the five-match series in Dharamsala on Thursday. Ashwin, who is only the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to take 500 Test wickets, has been in and out of the team in recent years. India have lacked batting depth in Test cricket and during matches against SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries, Ravindra Jadeja was favoured over the veteran spinner. In a conversation with Kumble on Jio Cinema, Ashwin opened up about his struggles earlier in his career and how he made peace with the doubts surrounding his selection.

“I don’t want to sound controversial. I can compare this to a lot of other things that are happening in the world right now. But I genuinely do feel that bowlers play second-fiddle to the batters. That’s because probably, batters just get that one chance. I mean you are knocked out; you are out,” he said.

“This used to play on my mind constantly: Why is it that I get one game to fail and why is it that somebody else gets more games to fail? Eventually I have made peace with the fact that the team needs to win. Even when I am not playing and the team wins after five days, I am the most delighted person in the dressing room. When I was young, all I wanted to do was wear the India jersey for one day.”

“Just because of who I am today, I cannot put my selfish interest ahead of the team. Yes, there have been disappointing days, but I have learnt how to deal with it, and I am extremely happy that I played alongside some of the great cricketers that India has ever produced,” he added.
