The highest-paid player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, Mitchell Starc had some troubled time in the 2024 season with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), especially when the season wasn’t going as planned for him. However, the Australian pace icon redeemed himself in the knockouts phase of the campaign, delivering match-winning performances with the ball. He was crucial to KKR’s title-winning season, proving the owners right as the team lifted its third IPL title in history. However, even after KKR had won the title, Starc wasn’t luck enough to have his salary reminders completely eliminated.

In a chat on Willow Talk, Starc admitted being engaged in a cheeky chat with KKR youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi who mocked the IPL title-winning prize money. Starc, who got INR 24.75 crore for the 2024 IPL season, saw the entire team get a lower prize money amount (INR 20 crore) unfold in front of him as KKR lifted the title.

“The IPL Final presentation didn’t start until the midnight & basically killed the vibe. Then cheques for winning team came over, it had INR 20 crore price. Angkrish (Raghuvanshi) looked at that and said – Huh! it’s not even what you got paid,” he said in a video that surfaced on social media.

It is truly strange that a single player in a tournament of the stature of IPL gets more salary than the prize money that is rewarded to the winning team.

Angkrish, who himself was a revelation for KKR this year, playing in the middle-order in the absence of Nitish Rana in the early stages of the campaign, couldn’t resist poking fun at the fact.

Young Kolkata Knight Riders batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi faced severe criticism from fans on social media after he tried to mock India’s badminton sensation Saina Nehwal. Raghuvanshi made his IPL debut in 2024 and had a memorable outing with the bat. In 10 innings, he scored 163 runs at a strike rate of 155.24. Raghuvanshi’s statement came after Nehwal claimed that sports like badminton, tennis, basketball are physically tougher than cricketers She also criticised the Indian fans for always prioritising cricket over the other sports.

“Everyone wants to know what Saina is doing, what wrestlers and boxers are doing, what Neeraj Chopra is doing. Everyone knows these sportspersons, because we have consistently performed and we have been on the newspapers. I did that, I feel it’s like a dream that I did it in India, where there isn’t even a sporting culture,” Saina said on the Nikhil Simha podcast.

“Sometimes, I feel bad that cricket gets all the attention. The thing about cricket is… if you see badminton, basketball, tennis, and other sports are so tough physically. You don’t even have time to pick up the shuttle and serve, you are like… you are breathing so hard. A game like cricket gets so much attention where I personally believe skill is more important.”

These words by Nehwal did not go well with Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who took to X (former Twitter) and wrote, “Let’s see how she goes when Bumrah bowls 150k’s bumper at her head.”

The KKR star later on deleted the tweet and went on to post an apology to Nehwal. He then wrote, “I’m sorry everyone, I meant my remarks as a joke, looking back I think it was a really immature joke. I realize my mistake and I sincerely apologize.”

However, this was not the first time when a sportsperson voiced his/her opinion regarding the ignorance towards other sports.

Earlier, India badminton star Chirag Shetty also slammed the Maharashtra government for felicitating the T20 World Cup winners and not him after India’s triumph at Thomas Cup in 2022.

On Monday, he did not get the chance to bat after coming on as an impact substitute as KKR won the match with ease.

In reply, Phil Salt led the chase with an opening stand of 79 with Sunil Narine and the two-time champions reached their target with 3.3 overs to spare.

“You just have to keep backing yourself and keep taking the right options.”

Kolkata Knight Riders found a new star in the form of Angkrish Raghuvanshi who scored a quick-fire half-century on his debut to help the side put 272 runs on the board against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Wednesday. The 18-year-old batter played a 54-run knock from 27 balls at a strike rate of 200. He smashed 5 fours and 3 sixes. In a video shared on the official social media handle of the IPL, Raghuvanshi spoke about his Team India ambitions and meeting Shah Rukh Khan, an actor he has grown up watching on TV.

“Obviously, don the Indian jersey. But to wear it like no one has ever done before. Everyone will look at me and say, I’m different,” Raghuvanshi said.

Talking about his magnificent performance against DC, the 18-year-old dedicated his 54-run knock to his coach, Abhishek Nayar and his teammates. He also revealed that Nayar made him learn the reverse sweep and other shots.

“I would like to dedicate this knock to my coach, Abhishek Nayar and my teammates and the support staff. I have learned a lot from staying with them. Abhishek sir has been working with me since my childhood. All this reverse sweep and all, he made me practice a lot. So, the main man is him only,” he added.

The young star also spoke about meeting SRK, saying the Bollywood actor probably didn’t know his name before but now he does. Here’s the video:

Summarizing the match, KKR’s target of 273 turned out to be too much for DC as they gave in to pressure and ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.

The pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora bagged two wickets each to reduce DC to 33/4 in the powerplay.

These early blows derailed DC’s approach to chasing down the massive total which got more challenging with each delivery.

Eventually, the required rate turned out to be too much as they ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi remained unsung despite amassing 278 runs during India’s triumphant U-19 World Cup campaign in 2022. But on Wednesday, Raghuvanshi waived his anonymity in a matter of 27 balls, paving the way for Kolkata Knight Riders’ 106-run hammering of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. Coming from the Abhishek Nayar school of coaching, the 18-year-old played down his effort and thanked his “guru”, saying he has influenced him the most and dedicated his stunning 54-run knock to the former Mumbai opener.

“He has helped me in everything, the way I think about the game, the way I work towards the game, the things I eat, the way I train, he is basically my guru and everything. That’s my relationship with him,” Raghuvanshi said in his post-match press conference.

Over the last few years, Nayar has established himself as a prominent coach in domestic and franchise circuits, and most notably, played a key role even in the resurgence of seasoned campaigners like Dinesh Karthik.

Speaking about his training regime, Raghuvanshi reiterated the role played by Nayar.

“It was pretty simple, the way I have been practicing the past few weeks, the past few years with my coach Abhishek Nayar…the way he has made me practice I didn’t really have to think too much when I went out to bat.

“I just batted with my instincts and I just trusted that. What I did during practice was enough, the way he has made me practice.. he has made me face tough circumstances during practice,” he said.

India’s highest run-getter at the 2022 U-19 World Cup, Raghuvanshi was born in Delhi but moved to Mumbai when he was 11 to train under Nayar and Omkar Salvi.

Since moving to Mumbai, Nayar has been a mentor to him. He played for Mumbai in the recent Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophies.

“I would like to dedicate this knock to my coach, Abhishek Nayar and my teammates and the support staff. I have a learned a lot staying with them.

“Abhishek sir has been working with me since my childhood. All this reverse sweep and all, he made me practice a lot. So, the main man is him only,” said Raghuvanshi.

All those shots were on display when Raghuvanshi stitched together a 104-run stand with Sunil Narine as KKR posted 272/7 in their 20 overs.

Speaking about his experience in his first outing with the bat in IPL, he said, “It was fun, (ball) came on to bat pretty nicely. I think the way we have been practising for the past few weeks…gotten used to play at a good level, and basically, that’s how it helped.

“I was supposed to bat at number three in the previous match also if a wicket fell in the power play, so that’s what my role is. Everything happened very quickly. I wasn’t thinking too much.” He added, “It’s nice to get into the tournament with a fifty, but more importantly, three wins in three games (for KKR) and that’s all the entire team is thinking about. It’s not personal, it’s how we can win games for our team.”

The Indian Premier League (IPL) unearthed another gem in the form of Angkrish Raghuvanshi in the 2024 campaign as Kolkata Knight Riders hammered Delhi Capitals by 106 runs on Wednesday.  The 18-year-old batter played a 54-run knock from 27 balls at a strike rate of 200. He smashed 5 fours and 3 sixes. While Raghuvanshi’s innings was full of boundaries, it was his chat with commentator Harsha Bhogle during the mid-innings break that entertained fans too.

With an innocent smile on his face, Raghuvanshi began the talk by expressing how excited he was to be speaking to Harsha, who also responded saying it was exciting for him to watch the young KKR star bat.

“I just wanted to watch the ball and react. I had worked in the nets for the last few weeks, just had fun watching Sunil play. Having watched the SRH match, nothing’s a winning score, we’ll have to bowl well. Bowl in the right channels and force them into mistakes,” Raghuvanshi said after the game. But, the conversation wasn’t as plain and simple as the young batter found himself in the spotlight after a fiery half-century.

Raghuvanshi was also sent by the KKR management to speak to the media in the post-match press conference. There, he said that it was “fun” to play the blistering knock against Delhi Capitals.

He added that the Kolkata-based franchise bagged two points against Delhi Capitals, and that’s what matters.

“It was fun. Came on to the bat pretty nicely… It’s nice to get into the tournament with a fifty. But more importantly, three wins in three games. The team is thinking about the next game. It’s not personal it’s just how we can win games for our team. We got the two points, that’s all that matters,” Raghuvanshi said at the post-match press conference.

Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan turned cheerleader as he applauded Sunil Narine‘s sensational 39-ball-85 that was instrumental in clinching the victory for his side during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. Narine provided the perfect start to the innings for KKR and along with youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi, he stitched together a 104-run partnership that took the total to a mammoth 272/7 in 20 overs. KKR owner and Bollywood superstar SRK was in attendance and he was caught on camera applauding the explosive effort from the veteran all-rounder.

A dominant Kolkata Knight Riders produced a brilliant bowling effort after their batters’ sensational display of power-hitting as they thrashed a lacklustre Delhi Capitals by 106 runs and moved to the top of the IPL table.

Sunil Narine showcased his batting prowess with a blistering 85 while teenager Angkrish Raghuvanshi (54 off 27) impressed with a fluent fifty on his IPL batting debut as KKR posted an imposing 272/7, five runs short of the highest total in the tournament’s history.

The Capitals never looked like they were in the game be it with the ball or the bat. They crumbled under the pressure of the mammoth total.

Skipper Rishabh Pant (55) scored his second consecutive half century while Tristan Stubbs (54) too hit a fifty but it was in a lost cause as DC folded for 166 in 17.2 overs to suffer their third loss of the season.

Continuing his explosive run, Narine punished all Delhi bowlers alike, sending the ball over the boundary rope seven times. He also hit seven fours in his 39-ball stay. The Capitals were guilty of dropping him on 53 and Narine made his opponents suffer as he notched his highest-ever score in T20 cricket.

Raghuvanshi (54 off 27 balls), who didn’t get to bat in his first IPL match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also fired on all cylinders, complementing Narine as the pair shared an explosive 104-run stand off 48 balls.

With Andre Russell (41 off 19 balls) and Rinku Singh (26 off 8 balls) also getting the big hits, batting looked like a child’s play for KKR.

With the ball, pacer Vaibhav Arora and KKR’s record buy Australian fast bowler Mitchel Starc deflated the chase in the powerplay itself, as they got rid of Delhi’s top four of Prithvi Shaw (10), Mitchell Marsh (0), Abhishek Porel (0) and David Warner (18).

Pant and Stubbs stitched a 93-run partnership, and even though they managed to score quickly, the required run rate jumped to over 20 runs per over and there was only one result possible.

Earlier, Delhi bowlers produced a forgettable performance as they conceded the highest total in the team’s history. KKR hit as many as 18 sixes and 28 fours.

Kolkata Knight Riders scripted history by posting a mammoth total of 272/7 during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi were the top performers while Andre Russell was yet again at his explosive best as the KKR batters made short work of the DC bowling attack. While KKR fell short of beating the highest IPL score of all time – 277/3 – that belongs to Sunrisers Hyderabad, this was the highest total posted by a side away from home in the IPL.

Highest score by an IPL side at an away ground –

Kolkata Knight Riders vs Delhi Capitals – IPL 2024 (Vizag) – 272/7

Lucknow Super Giants vs Punjab Kings – IPL 2023 (Mohali) – 257/5

Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – IPL 2024 (Hyderabad) – 246/5

Kolkata Knight Riders vs Punjab Kings – IPL 2018 (Indore) – 245/6

Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings – IPL 2008 (Mohali) – 240/5

KKR’s herculean target of 273 turned out to be too much for the DC as they gave in to the pressure and ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.

The pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora bagged two wickets each to reduce DC to 33/4 in the powerplay.

The early blow derailed DC’s approach to chasing down the massive total which got more challenging with each delivery.

Skipper Rishabh Pant (55) and Tristan Stubbs (54) bought up a 93-run stand with some effortless power hitting and gave the home fans something to cheer about. ‘

Pant scored back-to-back half-centuries in the IPL showcasing signs of him returning to his prime form.

But after Pant’s dismissal, the writing was on the wall for DC as they ended up losing the game with a massive margin of 106 runs.

KKR marched on to the top of the table with their third consecutive win of the campaign.

Earlier in the innings, the ‘City of Destiny’ witnessed two hours of carnage, 2 hours of ruthless ball-striking and 120 minutes of torture for the Delhi Capitals (DC) bowlers as Narine (85), Raghuvanshi (54), Russell (41) and Rinku Singh’s brutal-bashing helped KKR come within touching distance of surpassing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) score of 277, however Kolkata ended up with the second-highest total in the IPL ever.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, KKR got off to a rollicking start with a fiery partnership between Philip Salt and Sunil Narine. Having not grabbed a single run in the first over delivered by Khaleel Ahmed, Salt hammered Ishant Sharma for back-to-back two boundaries.

Both the KKR openers finally saw through Khaleel Ahmed’s trend of keeping his deliveries furthest away from the wicket. Narine ran an onslaught during Ishant’s second over and punished the DC bowler immensely as he bagged 26 runs in the over.

Dropped on one and caught on second, Salt’s innings came to an end after he got dismissed by Anrich Nortje, following a phenomenal backward-running catch from Tristan Stubbs.

DC bowlers continued to miss the mark against Narine and the opener completed his second fifty of IPL 2024 within just 21 balls. However, Nortje provided DC with a massive breakthrough, removing Salt for 18, but it was Narine who got everyone’s attention with an explosive fifty.

Narine with his batting fireworks that witnessed the side complete their 100-run mark within just 7.3 overs into the game, alongside Raghuvanshi looked destructive at the crease.

Mitchell Marsh came into the attack to stop the onslaught by KKR, as Narine and Raghuvanshi opted for a more controlled approach to see through the over.

The 18-year-old Raghuvanshi just cannot stop impressing the cricket fraternity, as he added up to his impressive performance in the match with a sensational reverse six. The youngster then slammed his maiden IPL half-century with Narine in a destructive mood on the other. The duo completed their 100-run partnership with significant ease.

A phenomenal Narine innings came to an end, much to the ultimate relief of the DC bowling unit until Marsh got the big wicket. Narine went back to the pavilion after scoring 85 off just 39 balls. Nortje sent Raghuvanshi packing.

Raghuvanshi rocked up on debut and delivered a stunning performance of 54 off 27 however his fine knock came to an end as he was sent packing by Nortje in the 13.2 over.

Just 15 overs into the match, KKR crossed the 200 mark. In the second-last over of the game, Rinku Singh smoked Nortje for three maximums and one four before losing his wicket to a miss-timed shot.

A terrific yorker from Ishant dismissed Russell, rattling off the wickets with a fiery pace. In the same over he removed Ramandeep Singh putting a stop to KKR’s dominant performance, restricting Kolkata to 272/7.

Kolkata Knight Riders found a new star in youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi as the 18-year-old slammed a half-century in just 25 deliveries during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. The young batter came out to bat at No. 3 for KKR and ended up hitting 5 boundaries and 3 sixes in an extremely impressive knock. He looked completely at ease against the DC bowlers and even stitched together a massive 104-run partnership with Sunil Narine. He made his IPL debut in KKR’s last match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru where he was the impact player for his side.

Raghuvanshi moved to Mumbai from Gurgaon at the age of 11 to pursue cricket and he had a tremendous campaign at the 2022 U-19 World Cup. He opened the innings and ended up scoring 278 runs in a campaign which ended with their side becoming champions under Yash Dhull‘s captaincy.

Raghuvanshi made his List A and T20 debut for Mumbai in 2023 and he was extremely impressive in the CK Nayudu Trophy where he ended up scoring 765 runs in just 9 matches. He was picked by KKR at base price in the 2024 auction and his childhood coach Abhishek Nayar is part of the team’s support staff.

Sunil Narine produced a six-hitting exhibition en route to a blistering 85 while young Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored a fifty on his IPL batting debut as Kolkata Knight Riders posted an imposing 272 for seven against Delhi Capitals.

Continuing his explosive run, Narine punished all Delhi bowlers alike, sending the ball over the boundary rope seven times. He also hit seven fours in his 39-ball stay.
