Wanindu Hasaranga on Thursday stepped down as the Sri Lanka captain in T20 Internationals ahead of their upcoming three-match series against India. India will tour Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series which begins with the three T20Is to be played on July 26, 27 and 29 at the Pallekele International Stadium, followed by three ODIs in Colombo. “Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform the public that National Men’s 20I Captain Wanindu Hasaranga has decided to resign from the captaincy,” a release from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said.

“Hasaranga said it is in the best interest of Sri Lanka Cricket that he decided to relinquish the captaincy duties and remain in the side as a player,” the release added.

Hasaranga’s last assignment as Sri Lanka skipper was in the T20 World Cup where the 2014 champions failed to make the Super Eight round.

“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Hasaranga was quoted as saying in the statement.

The SLC added that it has accepted Hasaranga’s resignation. “Sri Lanka Cricket, while accepting his resignation, wishes to state that Hasaranga will remain an important player for us in our international cricketing plans,” SLC said.

During the ODI World Cup 2023, a dismissal of Sri Lanka’s Angelo mathews snowballed into a major controversy. The fashion in which the former Sri Lanka skipper was dismissed was the reason behind it. Angelo Mathews was ruled ‘timed out’ during his team’s crucial clash against Bangladesh. The incident happened on the second ball of the 25th over, bowled by Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan. Sadeera Samarawickrama had just been dismissed and Angelo Mathews arrived at the crease at the fall of the fourth wicket. But soon there was confusion as Mathews realised that he had brought the wrong helmet and pleaded his case with the Bangladesh players and the umpires.

The visuals showed that he was indicating that the helmet strap had come off. The damage had, however, been done by then.

The substitute player of the Sri Lanka team did run with the correct helmet. But by then, Bangladesh had already appealed for a ‘timed out’. Angelo Mathews, quite animatedly, pleaded with the umpires and Shakib al Hasan but the appeal was not withdrawn. Angelo Mathews was absolutely livid after the dismissal and threw away his helmet in frustration right after going out of the field of play.

Then, while bowling, Angelo Mathews took the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan and gestured like pointing towards his watch.

Now, during a T20I between both the teams in Sylhet on Monday, the infamous incident was revisited. It happened after Shoriful Islam gestured in exact same way after dismissing Sri Lanla’s Avishka Fernando.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bowl in the first of the three-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka in Sylhet on Monday. The series marks the start of Sri Lanka’s month-long tour of Bangladesh, which also includes three one-day internationals and two Tests.

Both teams view the series as key preparations ahead of the World Cup in June. Bangladesh have never defeated Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 series.

Bangladesh: Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), Litton Das (wk), Towhid Hridoy, Soumya Sarkar, Mahedi Hasan, Mahmudullah Riyad, Jaker Ali Anik, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam.

Sri Lanka: Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kamindu Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka (capt), Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Akila Dananjaya, Binura Fernando.

“Have To Play Our A Game”: Sri Lanka All-Rounder Angelo Matthews Ahead Of ODI World Cup Match vs England https://artifex.news/have-to-play-our-a-game-sri-lanka-all-rounder-angelo-matthews-ahead-of-odi-world-cup-match-vs-england-4513226/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 14:32:25 +0000 https://artifex.news/have-to-play-our-a-game-sri-lanka-all-rounder-angelo-matthews-ahead-of-odi-world-cup-match-vs-england-4513226/ Read More ““Have To Play Our A Game”: Sri Lanka All-Rounder Angelo Matthews Ahead Of ODI World Cup Match vs England” »

Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews on Tuesday said Sri Lanka need to be ready for a desperate England onslaught, and urged his teammates to fight fire with fire. Sri Lanka will face defending champions England here on Thursday in a World Cup match that is a must-win for both the sides. “We have to play our A game to win against a strong English team. Even though they haven’t played to their potential, they are a very dangerous team. They can hurt us badly.

“It’s a good wicket, small outfield, and we have to fight fire with fire because they’re going to come really hard at us and we are up for the challenge,” said Mathews, who came in as a replacement for injured pacer Matheesha Pathirana, during the pre-match press conference.

Mathews was not included in Sri Lanka’s initial 15-member World Cup squad, and was first drafted in as a travel reserve and then eventually joined the team as an injury replacement for Pathirana on Tuesday.

Offering commensurations to Pathirana, who returned home with a shoulder injury, Mathews said he was keeping himself mentally and physically in shape for any opportunity that might come his way.

“I haven’t played a lot of white ball cricket over the last three years. But I’m hoping to use all my experience and give it all out in this World Cup. I wasn’t expecting this call. But I was training very hard with other boys if I get the opportunity,” said Mathews.

The 36-year-old Colombo man was not particularly bothered about his role within the team, and said his focus was just to contribute to the side cause.

“Our top-order is quite settled. So, it looks like I’ll bat in the middle-order. But the position doesn’t really matter, as long as I can contribute in whatever way possible towards a winning cause,” Mathews said.

“I’m not really bothered about personal milestones, batting up the order and getting hundreds or fifties. I’d rather bat anywhere the team wants me to,” he added.

Mathews, who will be playing in his fourth and final World Cup for Sri Lanka, said the primary goal is to try and take the team to the semifinals.

Sri Lanka need to win all their remaining five matches to give themselves a chance to enter the last four stage.

“This marks my fourth 50-over World Cup match. Our team and I are committed to giving our best performance, with the primary goal of reaching the semifinals. I’m fully prepared to put in the hard work necessary to achieve this,” Mathews said.

The Lankan cricketer, with 221 ODIs under his belt, said his focus will be to keep away from being emotional while playing his final 50-over World Cup.

“We are people with emotions and then reacting to those emotions is going to damage you. So, I try to keep calm and then focus on what I have to do and then obviously I can do the right thing,” Mathews said.

Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews on Tuesday replaced injured pacer Matheesha Pathirana in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad ahead of their match against England in Bengaluru on Thursday. Pathirana had sustained a shoulder injury during Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan, and the 20-year-old did not play in the subsequent games against Australia and Netherlands. This is the fourth World Cup of Mathews since the 2011 edition, and the 36-year-old has played 221 ODIs for Sri Lanka. He has scored 5865 runs with three hundreds and 40 fifties and also has taken 120 wickets in the format.

Sri Lanka had recalled him as a travelling reserve last week along with pacer Dushmantha Chameera after he was sidelined in their original World Cup squad.

Pathirana is the second Lankan player to be ruled out of the World Cup after captain Dasun Shanaka flew back home with a quadriceps tear, an injury that warranted at least three weeks of recovery time.

Chamika Karunaratne was named as Shanaka’s replacement.

Kusal Mendis has stepped in as Lankan captain in place of Shanaka.
