Tech Mahindra Limited has announced the opening of an advanced Manufacturing Experience Center at its campus in Sholinganallur, Chennai which was inaugurated by Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, and Mohit Joshi, CEO and Managing Director of Tech Mahindra.

The center will help manufacturers quickly prototype and scale AI-driven innovations to address industry challenges such as high operational costs, process inefficiencies, supply chain disruptions, and complex operational hurdles, the company said.

It will also serve as a hub for customers to visualise, test, and validate solutions in a low-risk environment before implementing them on a larger scale, thereby accelerating development cycles by allowing businesses to assess their return on investment and improve operations in a controlled setting, it added.

Mohit Joshi, CEO and Managing Director, Tech Mahindra, said, “The opening of the Manufacturing Experience Center is a pivotal step in our journey to support customers in achieving smart and sustainable manufacturing solutions.”

“It highlights Tech Mahindra’s commitment to investing in innovative capabilities. By showcasing next-gen technologies, the center will enable manufacturers to improve their operational resilience and quickly adapt to future demands,” he added.

The center will feature six industry-specific hubs: Automotive, Aerospace, Industrial, Process, CMM (Construction, Metals & Mining), and Smart Factory Services.

New Delhi:

Weighing in on the much-debated topic of work-life balance and putting in more working hours as suggested by some corporate leaders in the recent past, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said he believed in the quality of work and not the quantity.

Addressing the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025 here in the national capital, Anand Mahindra, said that the ongoing debate was wrong because it emphasises on quantity of working hours.

“I have huge respect for Narayana Murthy (founder of Infosys) and others. So let me not get this wrong, of course. But I have to say something, I think this debate is in the wrong direction,” Anand Mahindra told the youth.

“My point is we have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work. So it’s not about 48, 40 hours, it’s not about 70 hours, it’s not about 90 hours,” Anand Mahindra said.

He said that it depends on the output of the work. “What output are you doing even if it’s 10 hours? You can change the world in 10 hours.”

Notably, several countries are experimenting with or have adopted a four-day workweek.

Anand Mahindra said he always believed that one has to have leaders and people in their company who make wise decisions and choices.

Expanding onto which kind of mind makes the right choices and right decisions, Anand Mahindra said it is a mind that is exposed to holistic thinking that is open to inputs from around the world.

“That is why I’m for liberal arts. I think even if you are an engineer, even if you’re an MBA, you must study art, you must study culture,” Anand Mahindra said. “Because I think you make better decisions when you have a whole brain when you are informed about arts and culture, that’s when you’ll make a good decision.”

“If you don’t, if you’re not spending time at home, if you’re not spending time with friends if you’re not reading, if you’re not, if you don’t have time to reflect, how will you bring the right inputs into making a decision?”

Citing an example about his auto manufacturing business, Anand Mahindra said to manufacture a car for a family one must understand the family’s needs.

“Let’s take our business, you make a car. We have to decide what a customer wants in a car. If we are only in the office all the time, we are not with our families, we are not with other families. How are we going to understand what people want to buy? What kind of car do they want to sit in?,” he argued.

In the same breath, Anand Mahindra quoted Mahatma Gandhi. “Open your windows, let the air in.”

“You cannot be in a tunnel all the time,” Anand Mahindra said, reiterating his support for quality of work instead of quantity.

Anand Mahindra was asked in a quick follow-up about how many hours he puts in. He avoided a direct answer and instead said quality was important.

“This is what I want to avoid. I don’t want it to be about the time. I don’t want it to be about quantity. Ask me what’s the quality of my work. Don’t ask me how many hours I work,” he said.

Infosys’s Narayana Murthy and Larsen & Toubro Chairman SN Subrahmanyan recently advocated for a long workweek. The remarks snowballed into a controversy, with many criticising them over work-life balance.

Coming back to Anand Mahindra, an active social media user, he was also asked how much time he spends on X. He responded by saying that he was not on social media to make friends but because it is an amazing business tool.

“I’m on X on social media not because I’m lonely. My wife is wonderful, I love staring at her. I spend more time. So I’m not here to make friends. I’m here because people don’t understand it is an amazing business tool,” he remarked.

Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, has responded to a critical tweet targeting the company’s car designs, service quality, and reliability, even comparing it unfavourably to competitors like Hyundai. This came after Mahindra launched its new electric vehicle range, the BE6e and XEV 9e.

The scathing X post, in part, read, “Every single product of yours is for those who don’t study and research… your cars stand nowhere at all near Hyundai when it comes to aesthetics…I have no idea if your design team or you yourself have such bad taste. But seriously your cars are for those who want a mountain-size car in 201 and have no idea about reliability and quality.”

The user said that Mahindra’s cars lacked aesthetic appeal and reliability, calling some designs “gobar (dung) kinda.”

“So far, only disappointed,” the post concluded.

Rather than dismissing or ignoring the comment, Anand Mahindra responded to a screenshot of the now-deleted post, admitting the company still had a long way to go but reminded the critic to consider how far Mahindra had come since the 1990s when experts advised the company to “exit the car business.”

“When I joined the company in 1991, the economy had just been opened up,” he replied. “A global consulting firm strongly advised us to exit the car business since we had no chance, in their view, of competing with the foreign brands that would enter. Three decades later, we are still around and competing fiercely.”

Addressing the user directly, he noted that the company had used all the “cynicism, scepticism—and even rudeness as in your post—to fuel our hunger to succeed.”

He also admitted there was “no room for complacency” and committed to continuous improvement. He concluded by thanking the critic for “feeding the fire in our bellies.”

The critic later replied, “OMG this is so sweet. I am glad you took the criticism constructively. I had to delete the tweet after a call from your team because I thought they were unhappy with the harsh words.”

He also admitted his words were “wrong.”

Mahindra launched the XEV 9e electric SUV in India, starting at Rs 21.90 lakh (ex-showroom price). The electric SUV, based on Mahindra’s INGLO platform, will be available for delivery in February 2025.

Ratan Tata died at the age of 86.

New Delhi:

Condolences poured in as the Tata Group announced that its chairman emeritus and one of India’s most illustrious industrialists, Ratan Tata, has died. Leading business figures described Tata as a titan of industry and said his mentorship and guidance would be missed.

Taking to X, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said he was unable to accept Tata’s absence and all that could be done now was to emulate his example.

“I am unable to accept the absence of  Ratan Tata. India’s economy stands on the cusp of a historic leap forward. And Ratan’s life and work have had much to do with our being in this position. Hence, his mentorship and guidance at this point in time would have been invaluable,” Mr Mahindra wrote.

“With him gone, all we can do is to commit to emulating his example. Because he was a businessman for whom financial wealth and success was most useful when it was put to the service of the global community,” he added.

Terming Tata a legend, Mr Mahindra said his contributions will not be forgotten.

“Goodbye and Godspeed, Mr. T. You will not be forgotten. Because Legends never die… Om Shanti,” he wrote.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said that Tata was a visionary who embodied the spirit of India.

“India has lost a giant, a visionary who redefined modern India’s path. Ratan Tata wasn’t just a business leader – he embodied the spirit of India with integrity, compassion and an unwavering commitment to the greater good. Legends like him never fade away. Om Shanti,” Mr Adani said.

RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka wrote that the clock had stopped ticking with the death of one of India’s most respected businessmen and described Tata as a “beacon of integrity”.

“The clock has stopped ticking. The Titan passes away. #RatanTata was a beacon of integrity, ethical leadership and philanthropy, who has imprinted an indelible mark on the world of business and beyond. He will forever soar high in our memories. R.I.P,” he posted on X.

Mr Goenka’s thoughts were echoed by Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who said she was blessed to have known Tata.

“This is the saddest news – he was the tallest business icon. I was blessed to have known him. What a great man & a great mind. Om Shanthi,” she wrote and then posted a photo of herself with Tata, saying that she would cherish it forever.

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, said Ratan Tata’s leadership ensured that the group’s growth continued apace while staying true to its moral compass.

“For the Tata Group, Mr Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide and friend. He inspired by example. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass,” he said in a statement.

Ratan Tata became chairman of the $100 billion salt-to-software conglomerate, founded by his great-grandfather, in 1991 and remained in the post until 2012, taking charge again for a year in 2016. He was awarded India’s second-highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.

Engineers Day: Dashrath Manjhi was fondly called the ‘Mountain Man of India’.

On Engineers’ Day, Industrialist Anand Mahindra praised the efforts of Dashrath Manjhi, who cut a road through a mountain in Bihar’s Gaya district. Mr Mahindra said Mr Manjhi achieved the impossible despite not being computer literate. He came to be known as the ‘Mountain Man of India’ for his determination and perseverance. It took Mr Manjhi 22 years to build the 300-metre-long and 25-feet-wide road. He was rewarded by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. In 2016, Indian Post issued a postage stamp featuring Mr Manjhi.

“On #EngineersDay2023 I bow low to this man. No, he wasn’t an engineer. No, he didn’t graduate from any Institute of Technology. No he wasn’t even computer literate nor did he design any machines. But he believed what every true Engineer believes:: “NOTHING is impossible”,” Mr Mahindra said in his post on X (formerly Twitter).

His post amassed more than 1.6 lakh views in a few hours.

“For me, engineering was all about not giving up. Finding a way. Proud to be an engineer. It’s not a degree, it’s a lifestyle for me,” commented one user.

“Dashrath Manjhi is inspiration for billions of people,” said another. “Must have been an engineer in last birth sir,” a third user said.

Mr Manjhi, who lived in Nagar village in Gaya district, worked from 1960 to 1982 to create the road. His efforts linked Ghivra Mauja of Dashrath Nagar, in Gehlaur Ghati to Atara Prakhand, Wajirganj, reducing the distance from 75 km to just one km.

Mr Manjhi died in 2007 at the age of 70.
