New Delhi:

Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including Home Minister Amit Shah and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, met here at BJP president JP Nadda’s residence on Wednesday on the birth centenary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Sources said NDA leaders discussed the Congress’ recent political attack on the ruling alliance and emphasised the need to speak in a united voice to counter the party’s “fake narrative”.

The Congress has attacked Mr Shah alleging insult of BR Ambedkar, with the home minister accusing the opposition party of using a short clip of his speech to distort his remarks.

Mr Shah and Mr Nadda said the ruling alliance’s focus should remain on good governance and people’s welfare, which have brought it support from the masses, they added.

Besides Mr Shah and Mr Naidu, JD(U) leader and Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Apna Dal (S) president and Union minister Anupriya Patel, as well as JD(S) leader and Union minister HD Kumaraswamy, were present at the meeting. With the NDA putting in a broad mechanism to boost coordination, it was noted that its members would continue to consult over key issues, with ministers and other senior leaders meeting the MPs regularly.

Bihar’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (S) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi, also a minister in the Modi government, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) president Upendra Kushwaha, a Rajya Sabha MP, and Thushar Vellappally, president of Bharath Dharma Jana Sena, were also present at the meeting.

Though there was no official word on the agenda of the meeting, sources said good governance and political issues were discussed.

Good governance was a key theme of the Vajpayee government.

It was decided to hold a meeting of the alliance on the birth anniversary of the BJP stalwart, who is credited with successfully running the first coalition government for its full term.

“Attended the NDA leaders’ meeting in New Delhi today. Under the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi, India is achieving unprecedented milestones and has positioned itself as a global superpower,” Mr Nadda said in a post on X after the meeting.

“The NDA government remains steadfast in its pursuit of the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’, ensuring a brighter and more prosperous future for all,” he added.

Uttar Pradesh’s NISHAD Party chief Sanjay Nishad said it was an “informal” meeting of the NDA leaders on the occasion of the birth centenary of Vajpayee.

“Our future strategy is to move forward together. We have to show unity in all the upcoming elections…everyone congratulated (the BJP leaders) in the meeting for the victory in Haryana and Maharashtra assembly polls,” he told reporters when asked about the meeting.

Nishad said the meeting also discussed coalition strategy to ensure that “all the work” done by Prime Minister Modi reaches the ground and “promises made to people during elections” are fulfilled.

The issue of giving reservation to the fishing community was also raised at the meeting, he said.

“I gave 30-37 page evidence on the issue of giving reservation to the fishing community since it was a poll promise. They will call (us) after a week and discuss it,” Nishad said.

Asked if issue of Mr Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar came up at the meeting, the NISHAD Party chief said, “…We have come for people’s welfare. How to get success in that, energy needs to be spent on that.”

“There is no need to respond to their narrative and negative thoughts,” he added in an apparent reference to the Congress and other opposition parties who are up in arms against Mr Shah over his remarks.

The NDA meeting comes amid the alliance’s focus on simultaneous elections, with all constituents lending support to the proposal.

A Joint Committee of Parliament, constituted to scrutinise two bills for simultaneous polls, is expected to meet on January 8.

The announcement of the scheme also comes in the run-up to the assembly elections in Delhi.

New Delhi:

Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced a scholarship scheme for Dalit students amid the ongoing row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Babasaheb Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha. According to Mr Kejriwal, the scheme ‘Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship’ is a response to the BJP’s “insult” of Ambedkar.

Under the scheme, the AAP government will provide free education in foreign universities for all Dalit students from the national capital.

“Government employees from the Dalit community will be able to avail the benefit of the ‘Ambedkar Samman Scholarship’ scheme. They will be able to send their children to study abroad for free. The Delhi government will bear the entire cost of their education, travel, and accommodation,” Mr Kejriwal said.

However, it was not clear as to how and when the scholarships would be given.

“Union Home Minister Amit Shah insulted and made fun of Babasaheb Dr Ambedkar in Parliament. Crores of people who love Ambedkar were deeply pained…Ambedkar had said education was the way forward and secured a PhD from the US against all odds,” the former Delhi Chief Minister said.

Slamming the BJP, Mr Kejriwal said, “BJP people, you abuse Baba Saheb, I will respect him. My tribute to Baba Saheb.”

The announcement of the scheme also comes in the run-up to the assembly elections in Delhi due next year.

The BJP has hit back at Mr Kejriwal and said such a scheme has been there since 2020.

“The Delhi government has sent just five children to study abroad since 2020 that too at a cost of Rs 25 lakh. By giving Rs 25 lakh to just five children, you want to show yourself as a sevadaar. The way you have been lying and insulting Babasaheb Ambedkar, the people of Delhi are seeing it all,” said BJP leader Harish Khurana.

Ambedkar row

A huge row erupted on Tuesday after Amit Shah, while responding to the Constitution debate in the Rajya Sabha, said it had become a “fashion” to take Amedkar’s name. “It has become the fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar… If they (the Opposition) took God’s name so many times, they would get a place in heaven,” he said.

Following this, the Opposition lashed out at Mr Shah, demanding his resignation. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress also moved privilege motions in the Parliament against Mr Shah.

Responding to the Opposition, Mr Shah accused the Congress of distorting facts and using clipped videos after being unable to defend itself against charges of attacking the Constitution and democracy in India. He also refused to resign, saying it would not “solve the Congress’ problems”.

Mamata Banerjee had termed the remarks made by Amit Shah as derogatory.

Kolkata:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she was shocked at Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks about BR Ambedkar and the way he was being “belittled”.

Mamata Banerjee was speaking at the ‘Kolkata Christmas Festival’ inauguration at Allen Park in the Park Street area and later at a get-together in St Xavier’s College.

“I am shocked at the comments made about Babasaheb Ambedkar… I feel bad seeing Babasaheb belittled,” she said.

Mamata Banerjee had on Wednesday claimed that Amit Shah’s remarks in the Rajya Sabha about BR Ambedkar were a display of the BJP’s “casteist and anti-Dalit mindset”.

She had termed the remarks derogatory, claiming that those were an insult to the millions of people who look up to Ambedkar for guidance and inspiration.

“The mask has fallen! As Parliament reflects on 75 glorious years of the Constitution, HM @AmitShah chose to TARNISH this occasion with DEROGATORY remarks against Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, that too in the temple of Democracy,” she posted on X on Wednesday.

“This is a display of BJP’s CASTEIST and ANTI-DALIT mindset. If this is how they behave after being reduced to 240 seats, imagine the damage they would’ve inflicted if their dream of 400 seats had been realised. They’d have rewritten history to entirely erase Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions,” she alleged.

The CM reiterated that Ambedkar, the father of the Constitution, deserved to be respected.

Amit Shah, speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday during a debate on Constitution, had said: “Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven).” Mamata Banerjee, in her address on Thursday, also alleged that the BJP-led central government “omitted December 25 from the list of national holidays”.

“This is not right. We love all religions and festivals, and Christmas is celebrated in all the districts,” she said.

The ‘Kolkata Christmas Festival’ will continue till December 30.

The BJP and the Opposition protests faced off in Parliament this morning

New Delhi:

Dramatic scenes played out in Parliament today as both the BJP and the Opposition took out protest marches amid the massive row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dalit icon BR Ambedkar. While the Congress MPs demanded the Home Minister’s resignation, BJP leaders said the Congress had humiliated BR Ambedkar and must apologise.

The Gandhi siblings dressed in blue, symbolising Dalit resistance, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Opposition MPs marched with photographs of BR Ambedkar. Slogans of ‘Jai Bheem’ and ‘Amit Shah, apologise’ were raised.

The BJP, on the other hand, took out a separate march holding pictures of Ambedkar. At one point, both marches reached the Makar Dwar of Parliament and the MPs from the two sides raised slogans to outshout each other.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur said the Nehru-Gandhi family and the Congress must apologise to the nation for repeatedly insulting BR Ambedkar. “Why did they not give Bharat Ratna to Dr Ambedkar, they hated him. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the Constitution debate in Parliament, the Congress was exposed and that’s why they are trying to raise this issue,” he told NDTV.

A George Soros Edit

To turn the tables on the Congress, the BJP’s social media handles today posted a morphed photo of Opposition MPs protesting with photos of BR Ambedkar. In these photos, the Dalit icon’s face had been replaced by that of US billionaire George Soros. The BJP has been alleging that the Congress works with Soros to destabilise the country – a charge that the main Opposition has trashed.

The Congress doubled down on its attack after the BJP’s Soros edit. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the BJP’s “tampering” of the photo shows their mindset. “He (Home Minister Amit Shah) insulted Babasaheb and after that, tampered with Babasaheb’s photo on Twitter. This is a mindset that vandalises the statue of Babasaheb. Who will trust them?” she told news agency ANI.

BJP MP Injured, Party Slams Rahul

Amid the protests, a major political row erupted after BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi was injured on the head. “Rahul Gandhi pushed a member of Parliament who fell on me after which I fell down …I was standing near the stairs when Rahul Gandhi came and pushed an MP who then fell on me…,” he told reporters. The BJP MP was rushed out of the premises in an ambulance.

Mr Gandhi said he was trying to enter the Parliament when he was pushed by BJP MPs protesting near the entrance. He also alleged that Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was pushed. “I was trying to go inside through the Parliament entrance, but BJP MPs were trying to stop me, push me and threaten me. This has happened…Yes, this has happened (Mallikarjun Kharge being pushed). But we do not get affected by jostling. This is the entrance and we have the right to go in,” he told reporters.

In response to BJP editing BR Ambedkar’s photo and replacing it with Soros’ in a social media post, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said it is an “insult to Baba Saheb.”

“This is the same mentality which damages Baba Saheb’s statues installed at various places. This is an insult to Baba Saheb. This is an insult to the Constitution maker,” she said while speaking to the media.

Earlier in the day, BJP shared a photo on its official X handle which shows INDIA Bloc MPs holding the photo of George Soros during their protest in the Parliament.

He said that whoever believes in Dr Ambedkar’s vision won’t tolerate his legacy being tarnished. “Every Indian who proudly believes and fights for Babasaheb’s vision of free and just India, where all are born equal, will never tolerate the great man’s legacy to be tarnished,” he said.

The Opposition MPs including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Sanjay Singh on Wednesday held a protest by carrying Dr BR Ambedkar’s photo in their hands.

Congress’ Venugopal posted on X, “The BJP is brazen in its insult and ridicule of Dr Ambedkar. Instead of submitting ensuring the Home Minister is removed from his post for the immense hurt caused to the crores of Babasaheb’s followers by Amit Shah’s statements, they are doubling down on the ridicule. Is standing up for Dr. Ambedkar against the insult to him a matter of joke for the BJP? They are bringing in their rotten falsehoods even on a sensitive matter like Dr Ambedkar’s legacy, because they do not respect him and want to diminish his stature for their narrow political goals.”

The Trinamool Congress has moved a privilege motion against Home Minister Amit Shah

New Delhi:

Amid the massive row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dalit icon BR Ambedkar, the Trinamool Congress has moved a privilege notice against him and said he had undermined the legacy of the Constitution’s architect and Parliament’s dignity.

Derek O’Brien, leader of the Trinamool Congress in Rajya Sabha, has moved the notice under Rule 187. The privilege notice comes amid an all-out Opposition offensive against the Home Minister, accusing him of insulting the Dalit icon in his speech in the Upper House yesterday.

While speaking during the debate to mark 75 years of the Constitution, Mr Shah yesterday said that taking BR Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” for Opposition leaders now. “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” he said. “Take his name 100 times more, but I want to say what are your sentiments about him.” Mr Shah said BR Ambedkar had to resign from the first Cabinet following his disagreement with the Jawaharlal Nehru-led government.

The remarks sparked a huge row, with leaders of the Congress and other Opposition parties accusing Mr Shah of insulting the Dalit icon. When the Parliament met today, MPs from Opposition parties, held photos of BR Ambedkar and staged a protest. While BJP leaders accused the Congress of circulating a short video clip that did not show Mr Shah’s remarks on how the Congress allegedly sidelined BR Ambedkar, Opposition leaders stepped up the attack on the ruling party and demanded the Home Minister’s resignation.

As the Opposition tried to corner the government and demanded Mr Shah’s resignation and an apology, the BJP leadership launched a counterstrike led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a six-point thread on X, the Prime Minister said the Congress and its “rotten ecosystem” were “gravely mistaken” if they thought “malicious lies” could hide their insult of the architect of the Constitution. “If the Congress and its rotten ecosystem think their malicious lies can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insult towards Dr. Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken! The people of India have seen time and again how one Party, led by one dynasty, has indulged in every possible dirty trick to obliterate the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and humiliate the SC/ST communities,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister added in his post that the list of the Congress’s “sins” towards BR Ambedkar includes: “getting him defeated in elections not once but twice, Pandit Nehru campaigning against him and making his loss a prestige issue, denying him a Bharat Ratna, denying his portrait a place of pride in Parliament’s Central Hall.”

Earlier, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee slammed the Home Minister, saying that the “mask has fallen”. “As Parliament reflects on 75 glorious years of the Constitution, HM @AmitShah chose to TARNISH this occasion with DEROGATORY remarks against Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, that too in the temple of Democracy. This is a display of BJP’s casteist and anti-Dalit mindset. If this is how they behave after being reduced to 240 seats, imagine the damage they would’ve inflicted if their dream of 400 seats had been realised. They’d have rewritten history to entirely erase Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions,” she said in a post on X.

“HM Amit Shah’s remarks are an insult to the millions who look up to Babasaheb for guidance and inspiration. But what else can you expect from a party that has internalised hate and bigotry? Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is the Father of the Constitution, this outrageous remark is not only an outright attack on him but all members of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution, which symbolised India’s unity in diversity with members from all castes, creeds, ethnicities, and religions,” Ms Banerjee said.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks amid the massive row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dalit icon BR Ambedkar had rubbed “salt on the wound”. Mr Kejriwal said he was “shocked” after reading the Prime Minister’s six-point thread on the uproar over Mr Shah’s remarks.

“You are saying the Congress did wrong by Baba Saheb. So how does this give you, your party, or your Home Minister the right to insult Baba Saheb? If Congress treated Baba Saheb wrongly? you will do so too? What kind of a clarification is this, coming from the Prime Minister?” the AAP leader said. “The country is outraged over the way your Home Minister insulted Baba Saheb in Parliament. And your statement has sprinkled salt on the wound.”

Mr Kejriwal’s remarks come against the backdrop of the upcoming Delhi election and the AAP would be looking to corner the Opposition BJP on this issue. Earlier, the AAP leader had hit out at Amit Shah over his remarks. “Amit Shah ji, Baba Saheb is no less than a god for every child in this country. We don’t know about heaven, but if Baba Saheb’s Constitution was not there, you would not let the oppressed and Dalits live on earth,” he said in a post this morning.

Leading the BJP’s firefight amid the Opposition’s all-out offensive on the issue, the Prime Minister has said the people have seen how the Congress has tried “every possible trick” to obliterate BR Ambedkar’s legacy and humiliate Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Sharing a video of Mr Shah’s remarks, the Prime Minister said the Home Minister had “exposed the Congress’ dark history of insulting Dr. Ambedkar and ignoring the SC/ST Communities”. “They are clearly stung and stunned by the facts he presented, which is why they are now indulging in theatrics! Sadly, for them, people know the truth,” he said.

Stressing that his government has worked tirelessly to fulfill the vision of Dr Ambedkar, the Prime Minister said, “When it comes to Dr. Ambedkar, our respect and reverence is absolute.”

Mr Shah’s remarks, which are at the centre of this row, were made in Rajya Sabha yesterday during the debate to mark 75 years of the Constitution. “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” he said.

“Take his name 100 times more, but I want to say what are your sentiments about him.” He said BR Ambedkar had to resign from the first Cabinet following his disagreement with the Jawaharlal Nehru-led government.

Leaders of the Congress and other Opposition parties have accused Mr Shah of insulting the Dalit icon.
