Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayadu has opened up on star India batter Virat Kohli returning to play Ranji Trophy after 13 years, saying that the veteran does not need the tournament, but rather needs time to “feel good about everything again”. He also urged everyone to “leave him alone”. Virat’s return to Ranji for Delhi after 13 years was a mixed affair. While his team registered an incredible win, the outing was not a success for him personally, as he could score just six runs in 15 balls in the only innings he played, perishing to an inswinging delivery by Himanshu Sangwan just after a thumping boundary.

Taking to X, Rayadu wrote that the “spark will ignite on its own” and people must “respect and believe in him”.

“Right now Virat Kohli doesn’t need Ranji. His technique was good for 81 hundreds and it will be good going forward as well.No one shud force him into forcing himself for anything. He needs time to feel good about everything again. The spark within will ignite on its own.basically respect nd believe in him, most importantly leave him alone,” posted Rayadu.

Virat’s return to Ranji came after fresh mandate by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which made domestic cricket compulsory for all international stars and struggles with form across all formats, especially Test cricket.

Virat has been facing a massive decline in his Test performances that dates back to the start of 2020. In 39 Test matches since the start of 2020, Virat has scored just 2,028 runs at an average of 30.72, with just three centuries and nine fifties to show. His best score is 186.

Virat ended the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle with 751 runs in 14 matches and 25 innings at an average of 32.65, with two centuries and three fifties. His best score was 121. Virat ended the last year with just 655 international runs in 23 matches and 32 innings, averaging 21.83, with a century and two fifties to his name. His best score was 100*.

In 10 Tests last year, he scored just 417 runs at an average of 24.52 with just one century and fifty, to conclude a disappointing year.

Former batter Ambati Rayudu has criticised all-rounder Hardik Pandya for not backing youngster Dhruv Jurel during India’s loss to England in the third T20I on Tuesday. For the unversed, Hardik refused to take a single on final ball of the 18th over after Jurel hit Jofra Archer‘s delivery to deep square leg. While Rayudu praised Hardik for his fighting knock, he felt the veteran all-rounder could’ve show more faith in Jurel. Hardik top-scored for with a 35-ball 40, but couldn’t prevent India from suffering a 26-run loss in Rajkot.

“It was a good performance because batting wasn’t that easy and wickets were falling from the other end. So he paced his innings well. However, when the finishing touch was required to be given, he could have shown a little faith in Dhruv Jurel,” Rayudu said on Star Sports.

“Even if 25 had been required in the last over, Hardik has the ability to hit that. So I feel if he had shown a little more confidence in Dhruv Jurel, the game might have been closer. However, the way he paced his innings was very heartening,” he added.

Recapping the third T20I of the five-match series, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and elected to bowl first in the encounter.

Opener Ben Duckett made a vital half-century before he was caught by Abhishek Sharma off the bowling of Hardik Pandya, having put on a good stand with Buttler to put England on a firm footing at 83/2.

The England middle order, however, was unable to negotiate with Varun Charkravarthy, who sliced through them, taking 5-24. That left England on 127/8, requiring Liam Livingstone to make a valiant 43 from 24 balls, with solid final-wicket support from Adil Rashid and Mark Wood, both of whom made 10.

England finished on 171/9, which looked like it might be slightly under par, but their bowlers flew out of the traps, taking wickets regularly with none of the India top-four making it past 24 runs.

Pandya impressed with the bat, making 40 off 35, and putting on a 38-run partnership with Axar Patel.

But after Buttler caught Pandya off Jamie Overton‘s bowling in the 19th over, there was simply too much for the tail to do, ending the innings 26 runs short.

India lead the five-match series 2-1 heading into the fourth T20I in Pune on Friday, January 31.

Another rising star has emerged from India’s rich cricketing talent pool in the form of Tilak Varma. The middle-order batter dug deep to rescue his team in the 2nd T20I against England at Chepauk, producing the sort of knock that makes him indispensable to the Indian team. As the Indian cricketing fraternity sings praises for Tilak, the batter has been backed to become an all-format player by the team’s former star Ambati Rayudu. It was the maturity Tilak showed during the Chepauk chase that made Rayudu make such a big statement for him.

Despite the fact that wickets kept falling at the other end of the pitch, Tilak kept his calm and only focused on keeping the scoreboard ticking. The batter scored an unbeaten knock of 72 runs off 55 balls as India chased down the target of 166 runs with 4 balls to spare.

“I feel India has got a huge superstar, and he can become an all-format player. It’s not that he is only a T20 player. Considering the maturity he showed today (India vs. England 2nd T20I), he has the ability to be a match-winner for India for many years. So I feel he should be backed in every format,” said Rayudu.

“He is a superstar cricketer, and I have seen him grow in Hyderabad. He has played four extraordinary knocks. Since Suryakumar Yadav has become the captain, the confidence he has been given and the trust that has been shown in him, he is repaying it fully,” he added.

Tilak also opened up on his improved batting in recent times, highlighting how hard he has worked on himself to improve his strike-rate in the shortest format.

“I have worked on my strike rate. My forward game is good. If I hit a run on the pick-up shot or the bouncer, then it will be very difficult for the bowler. So, I have worked a lot on this. My strike rate has also increased, and you can see that I am getting good results,” he had said after the 2nd T20I.

Former India star Robin Uthappa has attempted a fresh jab at current Team India star Virat Kohli, suggesting he cherry-picked players in the team during his captaincy reign on the basis of likes and dislikes. Uthappa, who has been making headlines of late with some bold comments, has claimed that Ambati Rayudu was left out of India’s 2019 ODI World Cup team as Kohli “didn’t like him”. Rayudu’s omission from the team came at the last minute, with all-rounder Vijay Shankar replacing him in India’s World Cup squad, leaving the entire Indian cricketing spectrum baffled.

Rayudu’s shock absence from India’s ODI World Cup squad had triggered a big controversy at that time, with the player himself also taking to social media to mock the selection committee’s decision.

While it was reported at that time that the then-selection committee chief MSK Prasad had the biggest role to play in Rayudu’s snub, Uthappa has now claimed that Kohli also had a role to play.

“If he (Virat Kohli) didn’t like anyone, he didn’t feel someone is good, then they were cut. (Ambati) Rayudu is the prime example. You feel bad. Everybody has preferences, I agree but you cannot close the door on a player after taking him to the cusp. He had World Cup clothes, World Cup kit bag, everything was there at his home. A player would be thinking that he is going to the World Cup. But you shut the door on him. That wasn’t fair according to me,” Uthappa revealed during an interview with Lallantop.

In an interview, MSK Prasad had claimed that other selectors and the team’s captain at that time (Kohli) also had a say in selecting the final roster for the ODI World Cup in 2019.

Earlier, Uthappa had also accused Virat of cutting short Yuvraj Singh‘s international career. Uthappa claimed that Kohli didn’t make selection a little easier for Yuvraj when he tried to cement his spot back in India’s ODI team after winning his battle against cancer.

IPL stalwarts Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu want a higher player retention ahead of the 2025 IPL auction as an unchanged core allows teams to excel in the world’s biggest T20 competition. The IPL had allowed the teams to retain up to four players in the last mega auction held in 2022. A three-year cycle has ended and another mega auction is on the horizon but teams have contrasting views on player retention. Some want as many as eight and some are okay with four or five.

The IPL Governing Council is yet to decide on the matter.

“Personally I feel retentions have to be a lot more because a franchise invests a lot on player, the core of the team is what makes every team unique in the IPL so me the longer the core remains the culture of the team remains.

“There is a great chance of success. Retentions have to be and there needs be lot of retentions. It can’t be one or two. All the important players should be retained,” said Rayudu, who would be turning up for Konark Suryas Odisha in the Legends League Cricket beginning September 20.

Sitting alongside Rayudu, Raina could not agree more with his former Chennai Super Kings teammate.

“I 100 percent agree with Rayudu. The mega auction should be every three years. The IPL Governing Council will do what is best for the game,” said Raina.

Gill should be the next T20 captain

The BCCI recently appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the India T20 captain ahead of Hardik Pandya. He is expected to lead India in the next T20 World Cup in 2026. However, Raina sees vice-captain Shubman Gill leading the team for a long time.

“Shubman Gill is a super star. Gill is vice captain it means someone is thinking about him. If he does well in the IPL and win the trophy he is the future (captaincy). He will be the next super star,” said Raina.

Raina is also excited about Rishabh Pant‘s return to Test cricket after close to two years.

“He is looking very good. He scored a fifty in Duleep Trophy. He has been keeping well. When you talk about a Test match you play it session by session.

“Bangladesh have done well against Pakistan. They have got good spinners, it will be interesting to see how the Indians bat against them,” added Raina ahead of the first Test beginning in Chennai on Thursday.

Former Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians batter Ambati Rayudu has been a man in the headlines ever since the Royal Challengers Bengaluru were knocked out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign. Rayudu didn’t hesitate in taking a swipe at the Bengaluru franchise for the manner in which it is run while also targeting Virat Kohli in a subtle manner, suggesting it’s not the Orange Cap that wins a team the IPL title but collective effort. Rayudu’s most recent attempt targeting RCB came after the IPL 2024 final, where he got involved in a banter with former England captain Kevin Pietersen on Live TV.

Pietersen, in reaction to Rayudu’s ‘Orange Cap’ dig at Kohli, was caught calling the former India star a ‘joker’, with the incident going viral on social media. However, Pietersen has now issued clarification.

“Come on guys! This tribalism with/against Indian players on social media needs to slow down!

Example – @RayuduAmbati and I were messing around after the IPL final and all of a sudden that banter has turned into an avalanche of abuse towards Ambati.

PLEASE stop it?,” he wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Here’s how the full conversation unfolded between Rayudu, Pietersen and the broadcaster’s pundit after the IPL 2024 final:

Rayudu: When you have a stalwart and a legend like Virat Kohli, who has set really high standards, it’s very hard for the youngsters to be in a side like that and try and match his standard because he always wants the team to be performing at his level.

Pietersen: No, it should be good for youngsters…

Rayudu: But sometimes the burden of really trying to be Virat Kohli in a sport where you know nobody is going to be like him.

Mayanti Langer: But didn’t Patidar step up to the plate?

“Patidar can only be a Patidar but not a Virat Kohli, and I think RCB, as a management, understands that you cannot have 11 Virat Kohli in the team. You need to have 1 Virat Kohli with 10 others being themselves, having their own identities and strengths and weaknesses. And you need to use them well in terms of resources,” Rayudu said.

“You can’t expect somebody to win the game in the first season. You need to give him that leeway and time to grow into a match-winner. So I think the management has its task out, and even Virat Kohli needs to ease his standards a bit when it comes to youngsters, nurturing them, and letting them go.”

Former Indian cricket team Ambati Rayudu once again courted controversy after his comments on Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru following the IPL 2024 final. After Kolkata Knight Riders’ victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 final, Rayudu said that Virat’s consistency may become a burden for the side despite the star India batter emerging as the highest run-scorer in the competition. During an analysis on Star Sports, Rayudu praised Kohli for setting high standards before pointing out that players like Rajat Patidar may find it difficult to replicate such performances.

Here’s the conversation between Ambati Rayudu, Kevin Pietersen and Mayanti Langer –

Rayudu: When you have a stalwart and a legend like Virat Kohli, who has set really high standards, it’s very hard for the youngsters to be in a side like that and try and match his standard because he always wants the team to be performing at his level.

Ambati Rayudu took a fresh swipe at RCB© X (Twitter)

As Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title, former Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indian batter Ambati Rayudu found another reason to take as swipe at Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rayudu, who has been trolling the Bengaluru franchise relentlessly since their IPL 2024 exit, took a fresh swipe, saying it’s not the Orange Cap that wins a team the title but collective performances. It was Virat who raced away with the top-scorer’s title this year, aggregating over 700 runs bus his team was knocked out in the Eliminator by Rajasthan Royals.

“Congratulations to the KKR team for really standing up for stalwarts like Narine, Russell and Starc and also contribute their share in the team’s win. That’s how a team wins the IPL. We have seen this over the years. It’s not the Orange Cap that wins you the IPL but it is the contributions like 300 runs each (of many players),” Rayudu said in a chat on Star Sports.

Rayudu even suggested that Virat should lower his standards as other batters in the team feel pressured string to match the contributions of the India great.

Virat Kohli is a stalwart and a legend there in the team. He sets so high standards which puts pressure on the youngsters to emulate him. So, Virat needs to lower his standards a bit so that the youngsters can be in a good state of mind in the dressing room,” Rayudu stressed.

Even a few days ago, Rayudu called out the poor management by RCB’s bosses, saying they prefer individual milestones over team titles. Such an approach by the management is the reason why RCB haven’t won a title in 17 seasons, stressed Rayudu.

“My heart truly goes out to all the rcb supporters who have passionately supported the team over the years. If only the management and the leaders had the teams interests ahead of individual milestones .. rcb would have won multiple titles. Just remember how many fantastic players have been let go off. Force your management to bring players who will put teams interests first. A great new chapter can start from the mega auction,” Rayudu had said in a post on social media.

While Kohli has been consistently delivering runs to RCB over the years, he hasn’t enjoyed the required support from the other end of the pitch. Even the franchise’s bowling department has historically struggled to produce consistency.

Former India, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ambati Rayudu has mocked Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) with an Instagram post following their playoff exit from the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) ongoing season on Wednesday. RCB suffered a four-wicket loss against Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator encounter at Narendra Modi Stadium to end their six-match winning campaign in the season. Taking to Instagram, Rayudu shared a video of Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali and Devon Conway enjoying their last year’s IPL title indicating five with their hands. He captioned the post, “Just a kind reminder from the 5-time champions. Sometimes a gentle reminder is required”.

His post came after RCB’s defeat against Rajasthan Royals as the former knocked out CSK from the tournament following their 27-run win over the defending champion in Bengaluru last week. After the win against CSK, Rayudu said that RCB couldn’t win the IPL title just by beating them and had to play with the hunger.

“If you talk about RCB today, it shows that only passion and aggressive celebrations don’t win you trophies. You need to plan. You didn’t get the IPL trophy just by reaching the playoffs. You have to play with the same hunger,” Rayudu had said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

“Don’t think you will win the IPL trophy just by beating CSK. You will have to come next year once again,” he had added.

RCB had a bitter-sweet campaign in the season as they overcame their sloppy start to qualify for the playoffs at the back of six consecutive wins but failed to go ahead of the Eliminator obstacle. Other than Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar, no batter managed to leave a positive mark while the bowling unit looked all over the place.

In Qualifier 2 of the IPL, Rajasthan Royals will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
