The Indian Sports Honours (ISH) is back with its fifth edition, aiming to spotlight India’s finest athletes and their remarkable performances from October 2023 to September 2024. Conceptualized by Cornerstone Sport, the honours celebrate achievements across a broad range of sports, including Olympic sports, Paralympic sports, the Asian Games, and the Commonwealth Games, along with Cricket, Squash, and Chess. This year’s event follows a detailed selection process, set to culminate in a grand honours ceremony where winners will be revealed live on stage at the JW Marriot Hotel Juhu in Mumbai on 9th November.

Indian Sports Honours has partnered with Ernst & Young LLP (EY) acting as the Process Advisors to oversee and validate the entire selection and jury process with inputs from Sportskeeda.

The jury for this esteemed event features a distinguished panel of sports icons, led by Abhinav Bindra, a member of the IOC and India’s first individual Olympic medal, as a chairperson. Alongside him will be legendary Indian athlete and President of the IOA, P.T. Usha, former World Number One shooter, Anjali Bhagwat, and Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney+ Star. The jury will also include Boxing Olympic Bronze medalist in 2008 Vijender Singh, Wrestling Bronze medalist in 2012, Yogeshwar Dutt, and former Indian hockey captain and player, Sardar Singh, as they all bring their combined expertise and insight into the selection process.

In a comprehensive and transparent evaluation, nominations will be shortlisted for ten prestigious Jury Honours and four Popular Choice Honours. The Jury Honours include categories such as Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, and Team of the Year, while the Popular Choice Honours allow fans to participate in recognizing their favorite athletes through online polls currently live on Twitter.

Jury Honours: Sportsman of the Year (Individual), Sportswoman of the Year (Individual), Para-Athlete of the Year (Male), Para-Athlete of the Year (Female), Coach of the Year (Male), Coach of the Year (Female), Team of the Year (Male), Team of the Year (Female), Sportsman of the Year (Team), and Sportswoman of the Year (Team).

Popular Choice Honours: Breakthrough Performance of the Year (Male), Breakthrough Performance of the Year (Female), Fan Club of the Year, and Club of the Year.

In addition to the established categories, there will also be a Lifetime Achievement Honour, and a new Grassroots Initiative of the Year Honour that has been introduced this year. This honour seeks to facilitate organizations and individuals making significant contributions to the development of sports at the grassroots level. By focusing on the promotion and nurturing of young talent, this initiative aims to inspire a culture of sportsmanship from the ground up. The honour will recognize those who have successfully implemented programs that engage, educate, and empower aspiring athletes, creating pathways for future sports stars. The recognition of these programs will motivate others to follow the same path, laying down a definite pathway for future athletes.

Bunty Sajdeh, CEO Cornerstone Sport said, “We’re thrilled to return with the fifth edition of Indian Sports Honours. This platform allows us to celebrate India’s finest sporting talent and share their journeys with a larger audience. Their journeys, combined with the support from fans, inspires us to make the event bigger and better every year.”

The Indian Sports Honours is a prestigious event that brings together India’s sports community and entertainment icons to celebrate our nation’s athletes. This powerful convergence of sportsmanship and entertainment shines a spotlight on the dedication, talent, and spirit of our athletes, making it an unforgettable celebration of excellence.

The sports ministry on Thursday announced the discontinuation of the Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement from this year onwards and the introduction of the Arjuna Award Lifetime in its place in a bid to “rationalise” the various sporting honours of the country. Instituted in 2002, the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Award, named after hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, is given to individuals in disciplines that are part of the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, among others.

In 2023, the award was given to former shuttler Manjusha Kanwar, ex-hockey exponent Vineet Kumar and kabaddi player Kavitha Selvaraj.

“The various schemes for sports awards have been rationalised wherein Arjuna Award (Lifetime) has been introduced in place of Dhyan Chand Award. To recognise the efforts of coaches at grassroots/development level, they are now eligible for the Dronacharya Award,” said a ministry statement.

“The Arjuna Award (Lifetime) has been introduced and will be given for life time contribution to sports development.

“Further, to recognize the Khelo India scheme, the Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy will be given to the University for Overall Top Performance in Khelo India University Games,” it added.

The last date for applying for the national sports awards for 2024 is November 14.

The General Body of the International Esports Federation (IESF) has elected Lokesh Suji, Director of the Esports Federation of India (ESFI) and Vice-President of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF), to its esteemed Membership Committee on a three-year term. This election marks the first time that an Indian has become a part of the membership committee of the International Esports Federation. The IESF is a global Esports organization working towards promoting Esports as a true sport beyond language, race, and culture barriers.

Its Membership Committee is instrumental in upholding consistency, fairness, and excellence among its members. They enforce the federation’s rules, promote integrity, and nurture unity within the Esports community. The committee also carefully assesses new member applications to maintain high standards and advance the global Esports mission.

The elections for Suji’s appointment were conducted during the recent Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) of the IESF on August 28 in Iasi, Romania, where out of the 70 voting and present members, a majority of 42 member countries voted in favour of his selection. As part of the membership committee, he will now leverage his vast experience and expertise to ensure a seamless execution of the process, contributing to a bright future for Esports within the IESF.

Vlad Marinescu, President of the IESF expressed his elation on Suji’s election by saying, “We are thrilled to introduce Mr. Lokesh Suji as the newest addition to the IESF Membership Committee. Drawing from our extensive collaboration over the past few years, I possess unwavering confidence in his passion, capabilities, and commitment to advancing the global Esports community. Under Lokesh’s leadership, ESFI has not only significantly contributed to raising Esports to a multi-sport status in India, but the nation has also achieved remarkable milestones on the global stage.”

“His vision for promoting democratic and transparent processes seamlessly aligns with ours, making him an invaluable asset for propelling the growth of the IESF family. Lokesh epitomizes the essence of Indian culture, reflecting the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (World is one family)’, which celebrates a world without boundaries and envisions global unity as one harmonious family,” he added.

Lokesh Suji is a pioneer and well-respected figure in the Indian as well as global Esports industry and has showcased exceptional thought leadership throughout his tenure as the Director of ESFI and Vice-president of AESF. Under his guidance, ESFI has established a thriving ecosystem for Esports in India, contributing significantly to the official recognition of Esports as a multi-sport event by the Indian government.

Led by his vision, ESFI has successfully organized fair national qualifiers to select the athletes for representing the country at prestigious international events such as the World Esports Championships and Global Esports Games year after year. ESFI has been sending the Indian Esports contingent to major multi-sport tournaments such as the Asian Games 2018 where Esports was a demonstration event and the Commonwealth Esports Championships last year where the nation’s talented athletes scripted history by clinching historic bronze medals in Hearthstone and DOTA 2 respectively.

Additionally, ESFI will also be sending the 15-member contingent to compete at the upcoming Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou where Esports is debuting as an official medal sport.

“It is an honor to be elected to the Membership Committee of the IESF and be part of an organization that has been driving the global Esports movement forward for so long. This election is a testament to the dedication of ESFI and the growth of the Indian Esports community. I would like to thank all the members of the IESF for their continuous support and look forward to working with the committee to contribute to the growth and integrity of Esports on a global scale,” said Lokesh Suji, Director, Esports Federation of India & Vice President of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF)

With this, India continues to expand its footprint in the global Esports landscape and establish itself as a powerhouse in the sport. Lokesh Suji’s election to the IESF Membership Committee reflects his consistent commitment to Esports getting recognition as a legitimate and globally respected mainstream sport
