An actor whose face was used by Albania’s government for an AI chatbot that it promoted to be a “Minister” told AFP on Wednesday (February 11, 2026) that she had launched a legal fight to stop the use of her image and accused the government of “exploitation”.

Prime Minister Edi Rama announced in September that an AI system, dubbed Diella, would oversee a new public tenders portfolio as a “Minister” that he pledged would cut corruption.

The move drew criticism from the opposition and experts who questioned the system’s accountability and transparency.

Well-known Albanian actor Anila Bisha, whose face and voice were used to create Diella’s avatar, said she had not approved her identity for use in that way.

Ms. Bisha said she filed a petition with the administrative court earlier this week requesting the suspension of the use of her image.

“It’s an exploitation of my identity and my personal data,” the 57-year-old actress told AFP.

According to Ms. Bisha, she had originally signed a contract authorising the use of her image until the end of 2025 to represent a virtual assistant on an online government services portal.

But after Mr. Rama’s government announced that Diella would become a minister, a video featuring a computer-generated version of her addressed Parliament.

In the video, purportedly made with AI, the “Minister” appeared as a woman dressed in a traditional Albanian outfit and said it was “not here to replace people”.

Ms. Bisha also discovered that the National Agency for Information Society, which developed the AI, filed a patent on her image and voice without informing her — a move that she says affected her ability to work.

Despite reaching out to authorities in the hope of negotiating a solution, she received no reply and decided to take legal action.

Diella, which means “sun” in Albanian, is responsible for all decisions relating to public procurement tenders — in a move that Mr. Rama promised would make the process “corruption-free”.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama made a thoughtful gesture to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on her 48th birthday, presenting her with a beautiful scarf, while going down on one knee and serenading her with a happy birthday song, “tanti auguri,” as they attended the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

What made the gift even more special was that the lightweight scarf was designed by an Italian designer who had relocated to Albania, showcasing the strong cultural ties between the two nations.

Despite their differing political beliefs, with Meloni leading the right-wing Brothers of Italy and Rama heading Albania’s Socialist Party, the two leaders have maintained a good working relationship. This was evident when Meloni struck a deal with Rama last year to divert some of the migrants Italy picks up at sea to detention centers in Albania. Although the centers are currently dormant due to legal challenges, the agreement demonstrates the willingness of both leaders to collaborate on key issues.

The World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi served as a significant backdrop for the meeting between Rama and Meloni, as it highlighted the growing importance of renewable energy in the region. In a major breakthrough, Italy, Albania, and the United Arab Emirates signed a landmark deal worth at least 1 billion euros ($1 billion) to build a subsea interconnection for renewable energy across the Adriatic. This ambitious project is expected to play a crucial role in promoting sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions in the region.

As the two leaders continue to work together on key issues, their collaboration is likely to have a positive impact on the region, promoting greater cooperation and understanding between nations.

Albania plans to establish a sovereign Muslim microstate within its borders run by a Sufi sect known for promoting “religious harmony and dialogue”, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced.

The tiny Vatican-like enclave within Albania’s capital Tirana will serve as the political home for Bektashi Muslims — the fourth largest religious community in Albania after Sunni Muslims, Orthodox Christians and Catholics.

The order was founded in the 13th century in the Ottoman Empire and is regarded as a tolerant, mystic branch of Islam open to other religions and philosophies.

Some of its most important leaders relocated to Albania after being banned in Turkiye in the early 20th century by modern Turkey’s founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

“Our inspiration is to support the transformation of the Bektashi World Centre in Tirana into a sovereign state, a new centre of moderation, tolerance and peaceful coexistence,” Mr. Rama said on Sunday at the United Nations in New York.

The Bektashi make up an estimated 10% of the country’s Muslim population, according to Albania’s 2023 census.

The Bektashi Order in Tirana praised the decision.

“The sovereignty of the Bektashi Order is an important step in strengthening the values of inclusion, religious harmony and dialogue in an increasingly divided world,” it said in a statement.

Citizenship of the new state of roughly 10 hectares (25 acres) will be limited to members of the clergy and individuals dealing with state administration.

Its government would be headed by the Bektashi’s leader and a council that will oversee its religious and administrative functioning, the statement added.

An early Ferran Torres strike gave Spain’s second-string side a 1-0 win over Albania on Monday as the three-time champions finished the Euro 2024 group stage with a perfect record and the defeat eliminated their opponents. Barcelona winger Torres finished off a fine move in the 13th minute in Duesseldorf to puncture the atmosphere in a stadium filled with a majority of noisy Albanian fans. However, this game was not a cruise for a Spain team showing 10 changes to the side which started their 1-0 win over Italy four days earlier. Spain had already secured top spot in Group B, but Albania knew they realistically needed a win to go through and that made for a frantic encounter at times, particularly as they pushed forward in the second half.

Despite their best efforts, Albania go home after picking up only one point and finishing bottom of a difficult section.

It is a regression for them from their debut European Championship appearance in 2016, when they also went out in the first round but did manage to win a game.

Beating a Spain side who have probably been the most impressive so far in Germany was always going to be a big ask for Albania, coached by former Barcelona left-back Sylvinho.

It is the first time since 2008 that Spain have won all three group games at either a World Cup or European Championship.

Coach Luis de la Fuente can now turn his full attentions to a last-16 tie in Cologne on Sunday against an as-yet unknown third-place finisher.

Centre-half Aymeric Laporte was the only Spain player to keep his place following the Italy game, with key midfielder Rodri suspended and everyone else given a breather.

Goalkeeper David Raya, defender Dani Vivian, left-back Alejandro Grimaldo and midfielder Martin Zubimendi, all largely untested at international level, came in.

There was also a start for Jesus Navas, who was part of the Spain teams that won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, and who is now 38.

Even Laporte was removed at half-time, replaced by Robin Le Normand, while Lamine Yamal and Alvaro Morata also appeared in the second half.

Albania, ranked 66th in the world, knew it would be a big ask to beat Spain having lost all of their eight previous meetings.

Spain first threatened in the 12th minute when Mikel Merino’s header was saved by goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, and a minute later they were ahead.

Dani Olmo stepped into the space between the Albanian lines to receive a pass, and then fed a measured ball in behind for Torres to latch onto.

The former Manchester City player timed his run perfectly and finished with precision too, his first-time effort going in off the far post.

Torres has made a habit of scoring at these tournaments, having netted twice at the last Euros and twice at the 2022 World Cup.

It took Albania until the final minute of the half to test Raya, the Arsenal shot-stopper flying to his right to parry a powerful strike by Kristjan Asllani.

Joselu hooked a Grimaldo cross just wide moments after the restart for Spain, before the Albanian fans raised the noise levels as they became aware of events in the other match.

They were very close to equalising when substitute Armando Broja met an Asllani free-kick and tried to lob Raya, but the goalkeeper saved.

Asllani then fizzed an effort just wide, and Broja was again denied by Raya in stoppage time as Albania bowed out.

The 2024 European Championship has been a breath of fresh air as 24 countries have been battling it out for the past week in an attempt to break through to the Round Of 16. The top two teams from each of the six groups will qualify to the next round with the four of the six best placed teams that finish third will also be guaranteed qualification. Hosts Germany, Spain and Portugal are the only three teams that have secured qualification as of now. Here are the qualification scenarios for each group heading into the final game-week

Group A: Germany vs Switzerland, Scotland vs Hungary

The Germans won their opening games against Scotland and Hungary which was enough for the hosts to guarantee their spot in the next round. In the history of the tournament, no team has ever failed to qualify for the knockout stages after getting four points which means Switzerland already have one foot in the Round of 16.

Scotland on the other hand have never qualified for the knockouts at the tournament and the side is aiming to achieve history if they were to win against Hungary in their final game. A win would take them to four points and although it would be difficult for them to overcome the six-goal difference that stands between them and the Swiss, A third place finish with four points could very likely see them qualify.

However a draw would see the side be in a very unlikely position to qualify depending on results from other groups.

Group B: Spain vs Albania, Italy vs Croatia

Spain has begun the tournament on the right note, securing qualification in the ‘Group of Death,’ in the second game week will see the side breathe a sigh of relief heading into their final fixture with Albania. Italy on the other hand will need to avoid defeat to secure their place in the next round. Croatia and Albania would both need to win to confirm qualification.

Group C: England vs Slovenia, Serbia vs Denmark

England must avoid defeat against Slovenia in their last group game to advance from Group C. A win will ensure Gareth Southgate’s team advances as group champions. If Denmark fails to beat Serbia, England will qualify regardless of the outcome against Slovenia.

Denmark and Slovenia will advance automatically as winners. Serbia will finish in the top two if they beat Denmark and Slovenia does not overcome England.

Group D: Netherlands vs Austria, France vs Poland

Poland became the first team to be eliminated from the race to the knockouts as they lost their opening two games against Netherlands and Austria.

Netherlands and France currently occupy the top two positions respectively after wins in their opening game followed by a draw against each other sees both teams at four points each and Austria not far behind with three points to their name.

If both France and the Dutch were to avoid defeat then they would guarantee qualification. However Austria will finish in the top two if they beat the Netherlands.

Group E: Ukraine v Belgium, Slovakia v Romania

This marks the first time in Euros history that all four teams have the identical number of points after two games. All four clubs know that a win on Wednesday will advance them to the round of 16, but no team can guarantee first place with a win.

A point will suffice for Belgium, who play Ukraine, and Romania, who face Slovakia.

If both games are drawn, goal difference will determine who finishes where (because all teams have the identical head-to-head points). Belgium and Romania will advance, with Slovakia aiming to be one of the top third-placed teams. Ukraine would be out.

Group F: Portugal vs Georgia, Czech Republic vs Turkey

Portugal have already qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament and they will be the table toppers if they were to avoid defeat against Georgia.

Both Czech Republic and Georgia will need to win if they want a shot at qualifying in the top two of the table. Georgia would also require Turkey to lose their game against Czech with the goal difference playing a part.

Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and Albania are the top four best third placed teams in the tournament as of now.

Albania left Croatia in danger of a group-stage exit from Euro 2024 after a thrilling 2-2 draw on Wednesday as Albania’s Klaus Gjasula scored at both ends, including a dramatic injury-time equaliser. After a disappointing 3-0 loss to Spain in their opener, Croatia were behind again when Qazim Laci gave Albania an early lead in Hamburg. But Croatia improved after making two half-time substitutions and Andrej Kramaric levelled with 16 minutes remaining, before Gjasula put through his own net.

The Albania midfielder became the last-gasp hero, though, slotting into the bottom corner in the fifth minute of injury time to snatch his team a point.

Croatia, World Cup semi-finalists in 2022, will now likely need to win their final Group B match against holders Italy on June 24 to reach the knockout phase for a fifth straight major tournament. “We will believe until the very end, to give our best as we did in this match,” said forward Kramaric.

“Unfortunately we didn’t win but we hope to be a bit luckier against Italy.”

Albania have won plenty of plaudits with their performances against both Italy, in a 2-1 defeat, and Croatia, but could not hold a lead in either game and will probably have to beat Spain to keep their last-16 hopes alive. “We have to go forward but we have to fight for every single point,” said Albania coach Sylvinho.

“It’s important for our lives, the life of the country, the federation. I’m proud of the players so we have to enjoy the moment.”

Croatia’s ‘golden generation’ were ultimately made to pay for a poor first-half display and are on the brink of bowing out from major tournament football in limp fashion.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic opted against a change in formation from the Spain defeat, sticking with his midfield trio of Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic. But he brought in Ivan Perisic at left-back, moving Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol into central defence.

Albania start fast again

The smell of smoke from flares filled the air outside the stadium as the supporters of both teams created one of the best atmospheres of the tournament so far.

Albania scored the fastest goal in European Championship history after just 23 seconds against Italy and they made another quick start.

It took until only the 11th minute for Sylvinho’s men to break the deadlock this time, as Sparta Prague midfielder Laci ghosted into the area unmarked to nod home an inch-perfect, inswinging cross from Jasir Asani.

Croatia tried to impose their passing game, but Albania were constantly in their faces and continued to look the more dangerous side, with right-back Elseid Hysaj firing off target.

The underdogs could have doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark, but Kristjan Asllani was denied by Dominik Livakovic when face-to-face with the Croatia goalkeeper.

Albania striker Rey Manaj passed up another excellent opportunity, failing to get enough purchase on his free header in first-half added time to seriously trouble Livakovic.

Dalic responded by making two changes at the interval, bringing on 21-year-old Luka Sucic and Mario Pasalic for the ineffective Lovro Majer and Brozovic.

Those substitutions brought about a quick improvement from Croatia, as Albania goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha made a good save to keep out Sucic’s left-footed shot, before Pasalic headed over seconds later.

Croatia finally found a way through in the 74th minute as substitute Ante Budimir picked out Kramaric inside the box and he cut inside before sending a composed finish inside Strakosha’s near post.

The turnaround appeared to be complete two minutes later as Sucic’s close-range effort was blocked, but rebounded off the unfortunate Gjasula and into an empty net.

Albania did not give up, missing a series of late chances as it appeared Croatia would cling on.

Gjasula had other ideas though, sweeping a loose ball home before a chaotic denouement that saw both sides throw bodies forward in search of a winner, to no avail.

Italy take on Albania in their Euro 2024 opener. Nicolo Barella will feature in the opening match of Italy’s European Championship title defence against Albania, coach Luciano Spalletti said Friday. Inter Milan midfielder Barella missed both of Italy’s pre-tournament warm-up matches against Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina with a thigh injury but Spalletii told reporters the 27-year-old would be available for the Albania game as long as he didn’t hurt himself in Friday’s afternoon training session.

The Azzurri are the title-holders but are going through another major upheaval after missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with Spalletti selecting a host of fresh faces and trying to bring in a more fluid and expansive style of football.
