Cristiano Ronaldo watched on from the stands as already-qualified Al Nassr lost for the first time in this year’s Asian Champions League Elite as they were beaten 2-1 in injury time by Qatar’s Al Sadd on Monday. The Portuguese star, 39, was reportedly rested for the fixture in Riyadh given the Saudi club had secured their place in the knockout stages last week, with three rounds of the group phase remaining. Ronaldo scored twice against Al Gharafa, another Qatari side, last time out, and then netted a double again in the Saudi Pro League on Friday.

However, the Al Nassr captain was omitted from Stefano Pioli’s matchday squad for the visit of Al Sadd.

Ronaldo, who has 15 goals in 18 appearances for his club this season, was spotted at Al Awwal Park sitting alongside his mother Dolores Aveiro and his partner Georgina Rodriguez.

Al Sadd took the lead eight minutes into the second half through Akram Afif, when the reigning AFC Player of the Year raced from the halfway line onto a long ball.

Afif outpaced defender Mohammed Al Fatil and finishing low past Brazil goalkeeper Bento.

Al Nassr drew level on 80 minutes, once Brazilian youngster Wesley’s low cross was turned into his own goal by Al Sadd defender Romain Saiss

However, there would be a huge sting in the tail for Al Nassr, when Afif was tripped inside the hosts’ penalty area and substitute Adam Ounas converted from the spot in the 99th minute.

With the defeat, Al Nassr stay third in the Western Region group stage, while Al Sadd move fourth to also claim a spot in the last 16.

The top eight teams qualify for the knockout stages.

Fellow Saudi side Al Ahli remain top – even if they surrendered their 100 percent record in this year’s tournament – thanks to an Ivan Toney double that secured a 2-2 draw with Iran’s Esteghlal in Jeddah.

The England striker twice equalised for the hosts from the penalty spot, with the first coming deep into first-half injury time and the second converted in the 86th minute. Esteghlal had Mohammed Hossein Eslami sent off five minutes before.

It represented a second successive Champions League Elite match in which Toney has scored twice following his double last week against Asian champions Al Ain.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty miss cost Al-Nassr King’s Cup progression© X (Twitter)

One of the greatest footballers of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to turn into a hero for his team as Al-Nassr took on Al-Taawoun in a King’s Cup match on Tuesday. Ronaldo found himself with a big chance to level the scores with a penalty in the stoppage time but his effort was unarguably one of the worst he has ever produced. Al-Nassr were 0-1 down against AL-Taawoun and the onus was on the Portuguese striker to bring the team level from the spot.

However, Ronaldo’ kick went well over the cross bar, so much so that it ended up hitting a kid sitting behind the goal on the hand. The young fan was trying to shoot the video of the penalty on his phone when the incident took place. The penalty miss from Ronaldo didn’t just break the child’s phone but also robbed Al-Nassr the opportunity of making a comeback in the game.

Al-Nssr lost the match and were knocked out from the tournament.

Since joining the Saudi Arabian club, Ronaldo hasn’t won a single major trophy. The King’s Cup offered Ronaldo a big opportunity to change that. But, when his team needed him to deliver, the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner floundered.

Ronaldo looked lacklustre almost the entire game. The only other real chance he had to score was when the 39-year-old took a free kick, aiming for the goalkeeper’s side, but Al-Taawoun’s Mailson produced a fine save to deny him the goal. As for the match, Al-Taawoun claimed the lead when defender Waleed Al-Ahmed turned in a corner in the 71st minute. Al-Nassr couldn’t make a comeback to go trophyless once again this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo was diagnosed on Sunday with a viral infection and will miss Al Nassr’s Asian Champions League opener this week at Iraq’s Al Shorta. The Portuguese veteran is targeting Asia’s top club crown to add to his long list of achievements when the competition kicks off on Monday. “Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo was not feeling well today and was diagnosed with a viral infection,” said a club statement posted on social media platform X on Sunday.

“The team’s doctor confirmed he needs to rest and stay at home. As a result he will not be travelling with the team to Iraq today. We wish our captain a speedy recovery.”

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward saw his first attempt with the Saudi side Al Nassr end in a quarter-final penalty shootout defeat to eventual champions Al Ain earlier this year.

Now rebranded as the Asian Champions League Elite, Al Nassr and the other teams from Saudi Arabia will be a major threat after spending vast sums of money in the last two years on the likes of Ronaldo and Neymar.

England forward Ivan Toney was the latest big name to swap Europe for Saudi when he left Brentford for Al Ahli last month for more than $45 million.

As part of the new-look competition, Saudi Arabia — which is expected to host the 2034 World Cup — will stage a mini knockout tournament from the quarter-finals onward to decide the champions, who will take home at least $12 million.

Al Nassr, Al Ahli and Neymar’s Al Hilal will all be involved when the Champions League Elite launches on Monday with a new format that splits 24 teams evenly into two groups of East and West.

Each team will play eight different opponents in the group stage.

The top eight teams from each zone will play in the last 16 over two legs in March, before the action moves to the final stages in Saudi Arabia from April 25 to May 4.

– Injured Neymar missing –

Saudi champions Al Hilal are looking to win a record-extending fifth Asian title but they are still waiting for the return of Brazilian ace Neymar, who has been sidelined since suffering a serious knee injury last year.

Al Hilal have signed Portugal full-back Joao Cancelo from Manchester City, bolstering a squad that already featured Aleksandar Mitrovic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ruben Neves.

Despite the absence of the 39-year-old Ronaldo for Monday’s opening encounter in Bagdad, Al Hilal are still able to call on Sadio Mane, Aymeric Laporte and Marcelo Brozovic.

The defending champions, Al Ain, are from the United Arab Emirates and were coached by Argentina great Hernan Crespo to victory against Japan’s Yokohama F-Marinos over two legs in May’s final.

Al Ain are one of two UAE clubs taking part in this year’s edition, with teams from Qatar, Iran, Uzbekistan and Iraq completing the West zone line-up.

In the East, clubs from Japan have posted the best results in recent years and Yokohama return to the Champions League to spearhead their challenge.

Coach Harry Kewell has been sacked since leading them to last season’s final, with the former Liverpool and Leeds forward paying the price for his team’s lacklustre domestic form.

Kawasaki Frontale and Vissel Kobe are also representing Japan, while three-time champions Pohang Steelers, twice winners Ulsan and debutants Gwangju will carry the flag for South Korea.

Chinese clubs’ spending power has long since dried up, but former Chelsea attacker Oscar is still on the books of Shanghai Port, who are led by Australian coach Kevin Muscat.

Shandong Taishan and Shanghai Shenhua are also involved from China, while one club each from Australia, Thailand and Malaysia feature in the East league stage.

It isn’t often that one sees Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the finest footballers of all time, score free-kick goals. More often than not, Ronaldo‘s attempts are found missing the target but that wasn’t the case on Tuesday. As Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr took on Al-Feiha in a Saudi Pro League match, the Portuguese forward brought his A-game to the fore. Though scoring goals isn’t something that Ronaldo has to struggle with, but his consistency in putting the ball into the back of the net from dead-ball situations had dried over the last few years. But, against Al-Feiha, Ronaldo found his mojo back.

The free-kick goal also marked Ronaldo’s 899th career goal, leaving him just one goal shy of the historic 900-mark. Ronaldo already has 130 goals for his country at the international stage, putting him at the absolute top of the standings.

Ronaldo’s approach towards the free-kick goal was also intriguing. The 39-year-old usually takes a few steps back and tries to hit the ball with power. However, against goalkeeper Abdulraouf Al-Duqayl stunned, he opted for a more measured approach. This time, it was more about beating the goalkeeper by sheer placement and precision. Ronaldo executed that to perfection, scoring his 64th career goal through a free-kick.

This was also Ronaldo’s 53rd free-kick goal in club football, putting him just one goal shy of arch-rival Lionel Messi‘s tally. When it comes to the national teams, both Messi and Ronaldo have scored on 11 occasions each. Here’s the goal from another angle:

In a recent interview, Ronaldo had spoken about the 1000-goal milestone that he intends to reach in his career. Already sitting on 899 goals, however, Ronaldo would need his body to help him quite a lot if he is to reach the historic landmark.

“It’s going to be pretty tough, but it’s about seeing how I am mentally, my motivation. If, physically, my legs treat me as well as I treat them? We’ll see, they are small stages. Until I get to 1,000, first I have to get to 900. I think I’ll get there,” Ronaldo had said about the record.

“If you look at my career for the last 20 years, my level is high. If you are top for 20 years, it’s unbelievable. I do that and I continue to do that. For me, it’s a big achievement,” he had said.

There are not many players in the history of football that have had a career quite like Cristiano Ronaldo. A journey which started in the streets in Madeira is likely to be called curtain upon in Saudi Arabia as confirmed by the Al-Nassr striker. Ronaldo’s journey has seen him score goals all around the world. After successful stints in Spain, Italy and England, Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr in January 2023 and has scored 61 goals in 67 games whilst providing 16 assists.

“I don’t know if I will retire soon, in two or three years but probably I will retire at Al Nassr. I’m very happy at this club, and I feel good in this country too, I love playing in Saudi Arabia. I want to continue,” said Ronaldo to Portuguese TV channel NOW

The 39-year-old Portuguese star’s most successful time came for Real Madrid where he attained the status of all-time great. In 438 games, Ronaldo smashed the ball to the back of the net an astonishing 450 times. He is also the all-time leading top scorer internationally.

The Portugal captain was insistent that, despite being one of the best players in football history, he does not want a farewell tour with the national team and it will be a ‘very spontaneous decision’.

“When I leave the national team, I won’t tell anyone beforehand and it will be a very spontaneous decision on my part, but also a well-thought-out one. Right now, what I want most is to help the national team in its upcoming matches. We have the Nations League coming up soon and I would really like to play there,” he added.

In the past, many top players transitioned into coaches, with perhaps the best example being Pep Guardiola, who played for FC Barcelona and went on to become one of the greatest coaches in the game.

In current days, the trend has increased significantly, with Xabi Alonso and Mikel Arteta the prime examples. However, Ronaldo dismissed any talk of him taking a managerial role after retirement.

“In my mind, at the moment, it is not about being a first team coach, or a coach of any team. I don’t see my future being that way. I see myself doing other things outside of football, but only god knows what the future holds,” concluded Ronaldo.

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo continues to extend the boundaries of social reach, as his new YouTube channel ‘UR – Cristiano’ smashed several records within just one day of being launched. The footballer, who is already the most followed personality across different form of social media, has spread out his wings even more by starting to conquer the YouTube scene. Despite most videos being around one minute long, Ronaldo‘s channel breezed past 1 million subscribers in less than the duration of a football match. But, how much could he be earning right now from his new venture?

Ronaldo has already put up 12 videos on his YouTube channel, in less than two days. However, while the optimal YouTube video length is around 10 minutes, Ronaldo’s staggering influence has ensured that even the small videos get millions of views. Ronaldo has already hit in excess of 20 million views on three separate videos.

According to a research by Thinkific, YouTube channels can make close to USD 6 per 1,000 views, taking the amount to a range between USD 1,200 to USD 6,000 per one million views.

At the time of writing, Ronaldo has crossed 100 million views on YouTube. Along with his star attraction, ad revenue and signed sponsorships as a result of the recent YouTube success, Ronaldo could have already earned well in excess of a few hundred million USD.

The Portuguese forward currently sits on over 30 million YouTube subscribers, featuring videos with his son Cristiano Jr and partner Georgina Rodriguez, on topics such as ranking his Euro goals, freekick challenges or ‘This or That’ games.

On the field, Ronaldo scored 44 goals in the 2023-24 season for Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr. Despite a poor Euro 2024 – where he failed to score a single goal – Ronaldo has started off the 2024-25 season with three goals in three games.

Cristiano Ronaldo backed to make Man Utd return© X (Twitter)

A defeat in the Saudi Super Cup final to arch-rivals Al-Hilal meant that Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo had to settle for a runners-up spot in the competition. Ronaldo, the man with a champion’s perspective, wasn’t happy taking the silver medal, and now has been backed to make a sensational return to Manchester United, the club where he started his journey to superstardom. Ronaldo’s former Manchester United teammate Luis Saha has urged the Portuguese striker to return to Old Trafford, even as a manager or a coach.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has the passion and dedication to return to Manchester United one day, that could be as a coach or even a manager. His second spell didn’t end how everyone had hoped and you can see why that frustrated him, he didn’t see the same formula and didn’t see the passion from young players that he had been used to seeing,” Saha told TVSporten.

Ronaldo, who first joined Manchester United from Sporting CP in 2003, left for Real Madrid in 2009 before making a return in 2021. However, his second stint at the club didn’t work out well, forcing him to leave the club in 2022 and join Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr where he is playing at present.

While Ronaldo has exemplary attitude and experience required to become a manager, Saha has urged him to change the way he communicates a little.

“Now he will know that he needs to find a new way to communicate when he becomes a coach, which maybe isn’t as harsh or direct as it was when he was at the club. He will work out how to be successful and use all his knowledge to do that, we’ve seen Roy Keane go into management and have success. Cristiano will understand what he needs to do as a manager and I see no reason why he wouldn’t be a success,” he said.

Ronaldo will be next seen in action on Thursday when Al-Nassr face Al-Raed in their opening match of the Saudi Pro League.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo is yet to make a decision on his future with Portugal after their disappointing exit from the EURO Cup 2024, according to a report from Goal.com. The report stated that Ronaldo is yet to decide his international future as the fans have started to speculate that the 39-year-old will retire from Portuguese football after their loss against France in the quarterfinal match of the Euro 2024. Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal crashed out of the ongoing Euro 2024 after their disappointing loss against France. Portugal kept the game 0-0 until the full time of the match, but in the penalties, they failed to save a single shot from the French players and lost by 5-3.

Euro 2024 was disheartening for Ronaldo as he failed to score a single goal in the tournament after playing all five matches. However, he kept just one assist.

Speaking after the match against France, Martinez talked about Cristiano Ronaldo’s chances of retiring from international football and said that no decision has been made till now. The head coach added that everything is too raw for his side.

Martinez confirmed that no ‘individual decision’ has been made after the match against France on Friday.

“No. Everything is too raw. We are still suffering the defeat. There’s no individual decision at this point,” Martinez was quoted by Goal.com as saying.

Portugal dominated the quarter-final match against France in Hamburg. Ronaldo’s side kept a total of 60 per cent ball possession, on the other hand, France kept 40 per cent ball possession.

After both teams failed to score in the 120 minutes of the match, the game moved to penalties. Portugal’s Joao Felix was the only player to miss the penalty and pushed Roberto Martinez’s side to the back foot. Later in the match, the French side won the game 5-3 on penalties.

Cristiano Ronaldo was inconsolable after Al Nassr’s defeat in King’s Cup final© X (Twitter)

Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo was shattered to the core as his Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr lost the King’s Cup final to rivals Al-Hilal on Friday. The closely-fought tie saw Ronaldo hitting the post with a beautiful bicycle kick, as the match headed into penalties after the normal time score remained 1-1. No winner could be decided in the extra-time, prompting penalties to be taken where Al-Hilal emerged triumphant 5-4, leaving Ronaldo tearful and inconsolable. While other players might see the Saudi Arabia experience as a ‘retirement league or competition’, Ronaldo’s emotions proved that, for him, it was much more than that.

As Al Nassr lost the match on penalties, Ronaldo sunk to the turf and was inconsolable as teammates and coaching staff tried to lift his spirits. Officials and teammates off the field accompanied the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, as he sat on the bench with the runners-up medal around his neck.

For Al Hilal, Serbian forward Aleksander Mitrovic opened the scoring at the 7th minute before Ayman Yahya of Al Nassr equalised late into the 88th minute. Finding an equaliser had become quit tough for Ronaldo’s side after their goalkeeper David Ospina had received a red card in the 56th minute.

Al Nassr kept the pressure on Al Hilal after Ospina’s sending-off. Right before the 90-minute mark, Al Hilal saw both of their center-backs Kalidou Koulibaly and Ali Al-Bulaihi being sent-off by the referee.

The extra-time gave Al-Nassr the golden period to find a winner by goalkeeper Yassine Bonou’s heroics kept the scores level the entire extra-time. It was in the shootout that Bonou shone yet again, saving the final two penalties from Ronaldo’s side as Al-Nassr took the cup home despite missing their talismanic forward Neymar Jr. due to an injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the record for the most goals in a Saudi Pro League season when he struck for the 34th and 35th time in Al Nassr’s final game of the campaign. “I don’t follow the records, the records follow me,” the 39-year-old Portuguese forward tweeted afterwards. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star struck in first-half stoppage time and again in the 69th minute with a header as Al Nassr defeated Al Ittihad 4-2 at home on Monday.

The previous record for most goals in a single season was the 34 scored by the Moroccan Abderrazak Hamdallah in 2018-19.

Al Nassr were already assured of a second-placed finish, coming a distant 14 points behind champions Al Hilal.

Ronaldo joined Riyadh-based Al Nassr in December 2022, the start of an influx of overseas players to the Saudi league on lucrative contracts.

Ronaldo, who led Portugal to victory at the 2016 Euros, has been selected for the squad for this year’s edition in Germany next month — his 11th international tournament.

He is the most capped player in men’s international football with 206 appearances and has scored a record 128 goals.
