Brazilian star Neymar on Monday ended his injury-plagued 18 month stay in Saudi Arabia as his club, Al-Hilal said they had “agreed to terminate the player’s contract by mutual consent”. “The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided throughout his career with Al-Hilal, and wish the player success in his career,” said a club statement posted on social media. The 32-year-old former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward played just seven times since joining the club in August 2023, despite a reported salary of around $104 million a year.

Neymar, the subject of what is still the biggest transfer in football history when he joined Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in 2017 for a fee of 220 million euros ($230 million at), joined Al-Hilal in August 2023.

He followed fellow superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to the lucrative Saudi league.

But two months after his arrival in Riyadh, he ruptured a cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Brazil in a World Cup qualifier in October 2023, which kept him on the sidelines for a year.

He returned for Al Hilal with two brief appearances in October and November but injured a hamstring and has not played since. He said he is targeting the World Cup.

The club’s coach Jorge Jesus said recently: “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”

Earlier in January, Neymar said he was aiming to play in the 2026 in the US, Canada and Mexico.

‘Last shot’

“I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance and I will do everything I can to play in it,” he told CNN.

While Neymar had been curted by MLS teams in the United States, reports in Brazil said Santos, the club where Neymar made his name in his now fading career, was in talks for him to return to his homeland.

A return to Brazil would likely be the last chance for a player who is his country’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 127 matches.

At the start of his career he was cast as the heir to Pele.

After scoring 107 goals in 177 appearances for Santos, he joined Barcelona in 2013, becoming the young star of a team that also featured Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, which swept to the Champions League title in 2015 by beating Juventus 3-1 in the final in Berlin.

A year later he scored the winning penalty in a shootout as Brazil won the men’s football gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In 2017, Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain prised him away from Barcelona with what is still a world-record transfer fee of 220 million euros ($230 million).

He won five Ligue 1 titles and he and prolific French forward Kylian Mbappe led PSG to the final of the Champions League in the Covid-blighted 2019-2020, but they lost to Bayern Munich.

PSG reunited Neymar with Messi in the French capital, but the trio with Mbappe failed to gel as personal rivalries got in the way and he was pushed to the exit, and to Saudi Arabia, by the Parisian management in 2023.

Brazilian star Neymar is in discussions about leaving his Saudi club Al-Hilal but his financial demands are holding up an agreement, a club source told AFP on Wednesday. The 32-year-old former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward has had an injury-plagued stay in Saudi Arabia, playing just seven times despite a reported salary of around $104 million a year. The source, who spoke on condition that he was not identified, said: “Neymar is discussing his departure with Al-Hilal but his high financial demands remain a major obstacle.”

Neymar is under contract with the Saudi Pro League club until June.

Reports in Brazil say Santos, the club where Neymar made his name in his now fading career, are in talks for him to return to his homeland but Al-Hilal would prefer a transfer while Neymar wants a loan deal.

Neymar, the subject of what is still the biggest transfer in football history when he joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017 for a fee of 220 million euros ($230 million), joined Al-Hilal in August 2023.

He followed fellow superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to the lucrative Saudi league.

But two months after his arrival in Riyadh, he ruptured a cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Brazil in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, which kept him on the sidelines for a year.

He then suffered a series of hamstring and knee injuries as he tried to return to action for Al-Hilal.

The club’s coach Jorge Jesus said recently: “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”

A return to Brazil would likely be the last chance for a player who is his country’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 127 matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo was left fuming after Al Nassr were beaten comprehensively by Al Hilal in the Saudi Super Cup on Saturday. Ronaldo has not won a single domestic trophy in Saudi Arabia since joining Al Nassr and this wait continues as Al Hilal thrashed his side 4-1. Following the fourth Al-Hilal goal, Ronaldo could not hide his disappointment with his teammates and his alleged obscene gestures on the field has gone viral on social media. Ronaldo could be seen throwing his arms up in frustration before showing that the team is asleep and another gesture that has caused quite a bit of controversy.

Coming to the match, Al Nassr took the lead in the Saudi Super Cup thanks to a goal from Ronaldo just before the half-time. However, Al Hilal completed a sensational comeback by scoring four goals in a span of just 17 minutes to clinch the match and leave Ronaldo completely frustrated.

The second half completely belonged to Al Hilal as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic struck first following a brilliant exchange of passes with Aleksandar Mitrovic

Eight minutes later, it was Mitrovic who found the back of the net as he headed in a perfect cross from Ruben Neves to leave the Al Nassr goalkeeper completely stunned.

Things got worse as Mitrovic doubled his tally after receiving a pinpoint pass from Malcolm and his powerful shot did not give Al Nassr any chance of preventing the third goal.

The icing on the cake came in the 72nd minute as Malcolm capitalised on an error from Al Nassr goalkeeper Bento and comfortably slotted the goal into the net from close range.

“We showed how good we are in the second half,” Mitrovic said.

“We had some problems in the first half and then changed in the second. We stayed calm and it feels good to get a trophy at the start of the season,” he added.

Cristiano Ronaldo was inconsolable after Al Nassr’s defeat in King’s Cup final© X (Twitter)

Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo was shattered to the core as his Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr lost the King’s Cup final to rivals Al-Hilal on Friday. The closely-fought tie saw Ronaldo hitting the post with a beautiful bicycle kick, as the match headed into penalties after the normal time score remained 1-1. No winner could be decided in the extra-time, prompting penalties to be taken where Al-Hilal emerged triumphant 5-4, leaving Ronaldo tearful and inconsolable. While other players might see the Saudi Arabia experience as a ‘retirement league or competition’, Ronaldo’s emotions proved that, for him, it was much more than that.

As Al Nassr lost the match on penalties, Ronaldo sunk to the turf and was inconsolable as teammates and coaching staff tried to lift his spirits. Officials and teammates off the field accompanied the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, as he sat on the bench with the runners-up medal around his neck.

For Al Hilal, Serbian forward Aleksander Mitrovic opened the scoring at the 7th minute before Ayman Yahya of Al Nassr equalised late into the 88th minute. Finding an equaliser had become quit tough for Ronaldo’s side after their goalkeeper David Ospina had received a red card in the 56th minute.

Al Nassr kept the pressure on Al Hilal after Ospina’s sending-off. Right before the 90-minute mark, Al Hilal saw both of their center-backs Kalidou Koulibaly and Ali Al-Bulaihi being sent-off by the referee.

The extra-time gave Al-Nassr the golden period to find a winner by goalkeeper Yassine Bonou’s heroics kept the scores level the entire extra-time. It was in the shootout that Bonou shone yet again, saving the final two penalties from Ronaldo’s side as Al-Nassr took the cup home despite missing their talismanic forward Neymar Jr. due to an injury.

Record-breaking Al Hilal sealed their fourth Saudi Pro League title in five years on Saturday, extending Cristiano Ronaldo‘s wait for silverware in the big-spending competition. Al Hilal, who lost Neymar Junior to injury in October, beat bottom-placed Al Hazm 4-1 to go an unbeatable 12 points clear of Ronaldo‘s Al Nassr with three matches remaining. The title seals a formidable campaign by Al Hilal, who remain unbeaten in 31 league matches and put together a run of 34 consecutive wins in all competitions — a record for a top-flight team.

Jorge Jesus’s Riyadh club have now secured bragging rights in the most anticipated Saudi season of all time, after Ronaldo’s arrival in January last year triggered a flood of big-name arrivals.

Neymar, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez were among the veterans to up sticks for Saudi, the world’s biggest oil exporter, on eye-watering contracts.

The ‘Big Four’ Saudi clubs — Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Benzema’s Al Ittihad and Mahrez’s Al Ahli — are all owned by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth vehicle that is driving Saudi’s economic diversification from oil.

Al Hilal will look to frustrate Ronaldo, 39, again when they take on city rivals Al Nassr in the King’s Cup final on May 31.

Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal set a world record for consecutive victories with their 28th win in a row to reach the Asian Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday. A 2-0 victory at fellow Saudi side Al Ittihad saw them surpass the previous record of 27 straight wins by a top-flight team, set by Welsh team The New Saints in 2016. Riyadh-based Hilal, already the most successful team in AFC Champions League history with four titles, went through 4-0 on aggregate in Jeddah.

Runners-up last year, Hilal triumphed in the quarter-final second leg at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium with second-half goals from Yasser Al Shahrani and the Brazilian Malcom.

Hilal will meet Al Ain of the UAE in the last four next month following the 2003 champions’ penalty shootout win against Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Al Nassr on Monday.

Ittihad’s miserable night was summed up in the final minute of normal time when striker Abderrazak Hamdallah was given a second booking for grabbing Hilal defender Ali Al Bulaihi by the throat.

The confrontation sparked a number of clashes between the opposing sets of players.

Ittihad, Champions League winners in 2004 and 2005, were missing a number of key players.

Karim Benzema, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner signed last summer from Real Madrid, was once more missing through injury, while 2018 World Cup winner N’Golo Kante was suspended after being sent off in the first leg.

However, it was the current Saudi Pro League champions who carried the greater threat for the majority of the encounter.

Ittihad almost opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Romarinho’s left-foot strike from the edge of the Hilal penalty area cannoned back off the post.

At the beginning of the second half Hilal goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais was twice called into action. First, the Saudi Arabia international blocked Marwan Al Sahafi’s low strike on the counter, before he leapt to his right to brilliantly palm away Ahmed Al Ghamdi’s fierce drive.

Yet on 61 minutes Hilal made safe their spot in the semi-finals.

Salem Al Dawsari played in Sergej Milinkovic-Savic for the Serbian international to feed Al Shahrani, who placed low past Ittihad goalkeeper Abdullah Al Mayouf.

Malcom then wrapped up the result deep into injury time, racing onto Aleksandar Mitrovic‘s through ball to seal a memorable night for the Riyadh giants.

Hilal, who lead the Saudi Pro League by 12 points, have won their past nine Champions League matches. They lifted the trophy most recently in 2021.

Ulsan edge Jeonbuk

Earlier on Tuesday, South Korea’s Ulsan moved into the semi-finals with a 1-0 second-leg win over Jeonbuk Motors to squeeze past their countrymen 2-1 on aggregate.

The result also sent Ulsan a step closer to clinching a place at next year’s expanded Club World Cup, which will be played between 32 teams in the United States.

Ulsan will face either Japan’s Yokohama F-Marinos or China’s Shandong Taishan next month for a place in the Champions League final.

Seol Young-woo’s volley in first-half injury time was enough to settle a tense quarter-final second leg between two teams who have shared the last seven K-League titles between them.

Yokohama and Shandong play in Japan on Wednesday with Harry Kewell’s Yokohama 2-1 ahead after the first leg.

Al-Hilal star striker Neymar will miss out on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League match against Mumbai City FC. As per Olympic.com, Neymar sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee during Brazil’s FIFA World Cup qualifier game against Uruguay on Tuesday after a tackle by Uruguay’s Nicolas de la Cruz and was carried on a stretcher. MRI scans confirmed that the injury was severe, leaving him in need of surgery and rehabilitation. The date of surgery is not decided, it is almost certain that Neymar will miss the match against Mumbai City FC at Mumbai’s home ground of DY Patil Stadium on November 7. The match and sighting of Neymar had become a dream for Indian football fans since both teams were drawn in Group D.

Al-Hilal is at the top of Group D with a win and draw, but Mumbai is at the bottom with a loss in both matches.

Neymar departed from French club Paris Saint Germain (PSG) to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal earlier this year.
