A bit of a drama took place on Day 2 of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy game against Jammu and Kashmir at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC, Mumbai. It happened on Friday when Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer was declared out by the umpire after edging Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi Dar’s delivery to wicketkeeper. Kanhaiya Wadhawan, who was the man stationed behind the stumps, took the catch diving to his right. Umpire didn’t hesitate in raising his finger but Iyer was unhappy with the verdict. He decided not to leave the ground and got involved in a discussion with the umpire. Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who was at the non-striker’s end, also joined the discussion.

Both the Mumbai batters were certainly questioning the legality of the catch. However, after a long discussion with umpires, Iyer finally had to walk back.

India’s star batters like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Iyer failed to shine in the game.

Rohit pulled Umar Nazir Mir for a trademark six, effortlessly lofted Auqib Nabi and Yudhvir Singh for a couple of more hits over the ropes to give a glimpse of his absolute best. But eventually, a fifty on Ranji comeback was not meant to be for him as he fell for 28 on Friday.

On the other hand, Jaiswal, who was also playing a solid knock, fell for 26. Iyer also scored only 17 runs.

On Day 1, Mumbai were bundled out for 120. However, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side gave a strong fight and bowled out Jammu and Kashmir for 206. Electing to bat on a green-top wicket proved costly for Mumbai as the side was shot out for a mere 120, and in reply, Jammu and Kashmir finished the opening day’s play at 174/7 for a lead of 54 runs.

Ajinkya Rahane continued his T20 re-invention with a brutal 98 that carried Mumbai to a six-wicket victory over Baroda and into the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Bengaluru on Friday. Mumbai bowlers chipped away at regular intervals as Baroda were restricted to 158 for seven, and Rahane’s blistering knock off 56 balls (11×4, 5×6) took his team to 164 for four in 17.2 overs in the first semifinal. Mumbai will face the winner of the second semifinal between Delhi and Madhya Pradesh in the final on Sunday.

It was quite remarkable to see Rahane, a batsman of classic mould, playing like a T20 thoroughbred and the right-hander brought up his fifty in 29 balls with a massive six over mid-wicket off pacer Hardik Pandya.

Notably, Rahane was bought by Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 1.5 crore in IPL 2025 Auction.

After the early departure of Prithvi Shaw (8), who scooped Hardik to Atit Sheth in the circle, Rahane and skipper Shreyas Iyer (46, 30b, 4×4, 3×6) added 78 runs for the second wicket in just nine overs.

The partnership knocked the stuffing out of Baroda, whose lone bright moment was when Hardik received loud cheers from a sizable turnout at the Chinnaswamy Stadium as he asked the security guards not to beat up three ground invaders.

Rahane was on 98 when Mumbai needed two more runs to win, and pacer Abhimanyu Rajput bowled a wide, perhaps purposefully, as the scores went level.

The crowd too expressed the displeasure with loud boos and jeers, but in the very next ball Rahane got out while attempting a big heave.

But by then, he had done his job to perfection.

Earlier, Mumbai bowlers were on the money right through the innings while exploiting some early movement on a damp day.

Shahswat Rawat (33) and skipper Krunal Pandya (30) could not exploit their starts, getting out to wayward shots.

Shivalik Sharma (34 not out, 24 balls) played a few beefy hits, including a last ball six, to take Baroda past the 150-run mark, but that was not even enough to stretch Mumbai.

Ajinkya Rahane Praises BCCI For Giving Importance To Domestic Cricket https://artifex.news/bcci-giving-importance-to-domestic-cricket-is-a-very-good-thing-rahane-5238227/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 14:34:22 +0000 https://artifex.news/bcci-giving-importance-to-domestic-cricket-is-a-very-good-thing-rahane-5238227/ Read More “Ajinkya Rahane Praises BCCI For Giving Importance To Domestic Cricket” »

Old guard Ajinkya Rahane understands the significance of religiously turning up for domestic matches to become a battle-hardened cricketer. So it came as no surprise when the batter Thursday lauded the BCCI for pushing players towards excelling in red-ball cricket. The BCCI has been actively urging the senior cricketers towards playing red-ball cricket, including domestic competitions such as the Ranji Trophy. “I want to mention about BCCI for giving importance to domestic cricket, which is a very good thing. Allowing players to go and play domestic cricket is very important,” Rahane said after guiding Mumbai to a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title.

The board had recently dropped middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan from the central contracts list for not taking the Indian team management’s advice of playing Ranji Trophy in order to regain their form and prove their fitness.

Speaking about the triumph, Rahane said Mumbai must look to repeat this performance in the next season.

Mumbai won the premier domestic competition for the first time since 2015-16, defeating Vidarbha by 169 runs in the final here at the Wankhede Stadium.

In fact, for the Ranji Trophy behemoths, it was their 11th win in 13 finals alone at the Wankhede.

“For us, what is important is that (in the) last couple of years, as a team we are playing good cricket. Our players are actually going into Indian team and representing Indian team which is a very good sign for Mumbai cricket again,” Rahane told the media after leading his team to title triumph.

“I’m not too bothered about other teams, but from here on, for Mumbai cricket, it is important to keep growing, keep thinking about how can we get better as a team in all the formats. We want to repeat this in coming years so our focus will be on that,” Rahane said.

Rahane said Mumbai can be proud of the fact that several of their players are either playing for India across formats or have been around the national side in the recent times.

“This victory means a lot to us. It is very special as you mentioned, (Mumbai) representing almost 10 players across formats and which is a very good sign. We all are happy (for) guys who are representing India right now from (the) Mumbai team,” Rahane said.

The win also brought an end to the career of Mumbai and India seamer Dhawal Kulkarni, who retired after taking 281 wickets in 95 first-class matches while having also played 12 ODIs and two T20Is for the country.

Kulkarni said he has no complaints about not having a long career at the international stage.

“What is gone is gone, I look at the future than what has happened in the past. I know I should have played more cricket for the Indian team,” Kulkarni said.

The right-arm pacer said he would be available to take up any role which keeps him associated with the sport.

“I have not thought about it much but cricket has given me so much that I want to give it back to cricket. Whether it be coaching or whatever I get, I want to give it back to cricket,” Kulkarni said.

Kulkarni, who had the unique distinction of taking the first and the last wicket in the final, said Mumbai were always patient against Vidarbha’s resistance.

“Winning a final in a tough way is what you want and that’s what we did as a team. We hung on to our nerves, put pressure, bowled really well, all the bowlers chipped in, it was you could say bowling in partnership and that’s what we did,” Kulkarni said.

“We didn’t lose our nerves. In the end we knew that we wanted one wicket, we wanted to break that partnership,” he added.

Rahane, who had described Mumbai’s head coach Omkar Salvi as ‘low-profile’ in domestic cricket, said he made a massive difference.

“Massive difference. The credit goes to him. Our journey as a team started from June (in 2023) and it was all because of Omkar’s vision,” Rahane said.

“We had some vision as a team but it came from Omkar so he focused on fitness, creating a great culture in the team, giving freedom to all the players, not only on the field but off the field as well. When someone is not doing well, you have to back that individual,” he added.

Kulkarni seconded Rahane and said Salvi created the right environment for their side.

“I also like to add that when you want a coach, you want to be a good friend of the team you are coaching. Omkar has been that person who everyone looks up to. He’s helped me a lot in my bowling career,” Kulkarni added.

India’s spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin on Thursday reached the milestone of 100 Test matches, with his appearance in the fifth and final game against England in Dharamshala. He was felicitated by India’s head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of the game for achieveing the feat. Ashwin, who is one of the most successful all-rounders of the modern era, credited the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, besides thanking his family on playing playing the 100th Test of his career.

“I mean, I’ve been lucky and blessed to have Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara at slip and leg slip. I had Virat Kohli at short midwicket, Pujara at leg slip, Ajinkya at slip forever. That is impenetrable. If I have to thank someone beyond my family, it’s those three. Along with Rohit (Sharma) taking some catches at short leg. Rohit has filled in for Ajinkya at slip,” Ashwin told The Cricket Monthly.

Before the match on the green fields of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) amid the beautiful and snowy mountains, Ashwin received a special cap meant to symbolise his 100th Test appearance, a privilege that only 13 Indians could get before him.

Now, he has joined the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar (200 Tests), Rahul Dravid (163 Tests), VVS Laxman (134 Tests), Anil Kumble (132 Tests), Kapil Dev (131 Tests), Sunil Gavaskar (125 Tests), Dilip Vengesarkar (116 Tests), Saurav Ganguly and Virat Kohli (113 Tests), Ishant Sharma (105 Tests), Cheteshwar Pujara, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag (103 Tests) in the elite company of Indian players having made a century of matches in white coloured clothing.

Present with Ashwin during the felicitation ceremony was his wife Prithi and his children, who were also really happy to see the Indian legend receive this special honour of playing a century of Tests for the Asian giants.

Following this, a special guard of honour was also given to Ashwin by his teammates as they took to the field for the match.
