Australia announced their T20I squad for their upcoming series against Scotland and England, with Perth Scorchers all-rounder Cooper Connolly earning his maiden T20I call-up. The post-David Warner era has begun for Australia, and a new opening pair will take the field for their white-ball series against Scotland and England. The Baggy Greens will play a three-match T20I series against Scotland in September. Australia will also play three T20Is and five ODIs against England later in the month.

The three T20Is against Scotland will be played on September 4, 6, and 7, and the England T20I series will begin on September 11.

In Warner’s place, Jake Fraser-McGurk has been included in the T20I squads for both series and in the ODI squad against England. Fraser-McGurk will look to establish himself as a long-term opening alternative for Australia.

Connolly has featured in 15 domestic T20s. He starred for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League 2022-23 final with his quick-fire 25* off 11 deliveries. In his Sheffield Shield debut, he scored 90 against Tasmania earlier this year.

Mitchell Marsh will lead the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, who has been rested. Cummins is currently involved in the ongoing Major League Cricket with the San Francisco Unicorns.

The experienced duo of Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell will also miss the T20I series but will link up with the squad for the ODI series against England.

Matthew Short, who travelled with Australia’s T20 World Cup squad as a reserve player, will miss out on the T20I tour due to the birth of his first child.

“This tour gives us a great opportunity to bring in some new players in the absence of David Warner and Matthew Wade, as well as giving some senior players time to prepare for the home summer and a busy first half of next year. We are particularly pleased to offer Cooper his first opportunity in the T20 squad, having introduced the likes of Jake, Spencer, Xavier and Aaron in the past 12 months. They are exciting prospects to join the likes of Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis in the white-ball set-up,” national selector George Bailey said in a statement by Cricket Australia.

With the ICC Champions Trophy almost seven months away, Australia will try to find the right balance within the ODI team.

“With the Champions Trophy on our doorstep early next year, the white-ball series against Pakistan leading into the summer and a huge home Test series against India, there has been a lot of planning invested into these next six months. That has included gradual integration of new players into our white-ball squads who have earned international opportunities via excellent form in Big Bash or state cricket,” he added.

Australia T20I squad for Scotland and England: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Spencer Johnson, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

Australia ODI squad for England: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis (wk), Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.

Australia’s batters have generally outperformed Afghanistan, while the Afghan bowlers have been their main contributors.

The last meeting between these teams was in Match 38 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2022, where Australia’s Glenn Maxwell and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan scored the highest fantasy points.

Jasprit Bumrah was the only Indian who made the cut in a 2024 T20 World Cup ‘Team of the Tournament’ made by England greats Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain. The team, which has been made on the premise of the group stage of the T20 World Cup, saw the likes of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Arshdeep Singh be left out, despite stellar performances. The English duo – who are now reputed commentators – analysed and explained their choices on Sky Sports Cricket.

Virat Kohli – the all-time highest run-getter in T20 World Cup history – will be hoping to make the Team of the Tournament at a later stage, having scored just five runs so far.

“We had Bumrah, obviously. He had to be in,” quipped Nasser Hussain. Bumrah has picked up five wickets in India’s first three games, including two Player of the Match awards, against Ireland and arch-rivals Pakistan.

Atherton and Hussain showed a lot of love for some of the unsung heroes of the tournament. Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Scotland’s Brandon McMullen and USA’s Aaron Jones all made their XI.

After winning IPL 2024, Gurbaz has been exceptional, scoring 167 runs in four innings at a striker rate of more than 150. McMullen has scored at an even faster rate, boasting a strike rate of 170.

Australia’s Marcus Stoinis was the only all-rounder picked by Atherton and Hussain. Stoinis is the third top run-scorer of the 2024 T20 World Cup so far, at a phenomenal strike rate of 190. Incredibly, he has also picked six wickets in four games, with an economy of just 5.77.

The Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup gets underway on Wednesday, June 19, as hosts USA face South Africa in Group II.

Atherton and Hussain’s ‘Team of the Tournament So Far’:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Travis Head, Brandon McMullen, Aaron Jones, Marcus Stoinis, David Miller, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein, Adam Zampa, Jasprit Bumrah, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Sydney:

Australia’s leg-spinner Adam Zampa said he would like to prioritise playing international cricket as he doesn’t get the same level of buzz when featuring in various T20 franchise leagues around the world. Zampa was due to play for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024, but pulled out of the competition due to fatigue reasons. After last playing international cricket in February, Zampa will be seen in action for Australia in the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA from June 1.

“I’ve really come to love playing for Australia. I always loved it, but playing under Dan Vettori, Andrew McDonald and Pat and Mitch as captains, it is just so enjoyable. I make good money playing for Australia and I would love to prioritise playing for Australia and being with my family.”

“I don’t get enough out of franchise cricket. It’s great for certain aspects of your life, and it can be really enjoyable, but it’s not like being in the Aussie dressing room, not for me anyway. I don’t get the same buzz out of it,” said Zampa to ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’.

The leg-spinner revealed he had thoughts about being a globe-trotting T20 leagues player, but is now content with not being part of that bandwagon. “There’s always a lot of chat about ‘can you play franchise cricket all year round’ and it was something I had thought about – at what age do I get through to try to then play a bit of franchise cricket.”

“But after 2023 and winning the World Cup and all that, and having a young family now as well, I’ve realised I want to play cricket for as long as I can, and instead of trying to play for nine or 10 months of the year, it’s play for six or seven,” he added.

Australia will play its 2024 men’s T20 World Cup games in Trinidad and then Barbados where Zampa will reunite with left-arm spin all-rounder Ashton Agar, who was in the squad during the side’s triumphant campaign in the 2021 edition in the UAE (but played just one game). Agar also missed Australia’s 2023 men’s ODI World Cup title-winning run in India due to a calf injury.

“I feel like there’s a little bit of unfinished business. Ash missed out on the last World Cup, he didn’t play during the World Cup we won in Dubai, and I really think this is his World Cup to put his stamp on.”

“I think the wickets are going to suit him, and I think he can play a major role. We feed off each other, we make each other train better, we think about the game a lot more when we’re around each other. So it’s great to have him back,” added Zampa.

He signed off by saying leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha is a big future prospect for Australia. Sangha was in contention to be a travelling reserve for Australia until he suffered a hip flexor injury during a training camp in Brisbane.

“He’s had a lot of niggles and injuries in the last couple of years that he’s found it hard to get any continuous cricket in, but he’s years ahead of where I was at his age. Even now, I think ‘I wish I could do that’ and ‘I wish I had that part of his bowling’. He’s really smart and certainly going to have a long career for Australia.”

“I’m pretty glad that I’m 10 years older than him, not five because I feel like there’d be a time where I’d be in the classifieds (looking for a new job). I’m 32 now and the way things are going, hopefully I get a bit more time playing for Australia – but I won’t be 38 and trying to hold on because I know Tanveer is going to be pretty special,” concluded Zampa.

Australia have unveiled their jersey ahead of the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup this year, to be held from June 1 onwards in the West Indies and the USA. The official X (formerly Twitter) account of cricket.com.au revealed the jersey on Wednesday. This will be the first time that the Aussies will be wearing a green jersey in the 20-over format. “Going green! Australia’s #T20WorldCup kit is confirmed,” cricket.com.au on X. Australia T20 skipper Mitchell Marsh was among the players who wore the jersey in the photo shoot.

Earlier on Wednesday, Australia named their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar won a recall despite not having played a T20I since the last T20 World Cup on Australian soil in 2022, while all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green also earned a place in the final squad despite some indifferent form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), as per the ICC. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will captain the side.

Meanwhile, veteran batter Steve Smith, young batting sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk, experienced seamer Jason Behrendorff and all-rounder Matt Short all missed out.

Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5, before Group B fixtures against England, Namibia and Scotland.

Australia squad: Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (C), Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, and Adam Zampa.

Rajasthan Royals were on Thursday dealt a big blow when leg-spinner Adam Zampa pulled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) citing personal reasons. Zampa, who was retained by Rajasthan Royals ahead of last year’s auction for Rs 1.5 crore, has withdrawn his name following a busy season for Australia. Zampa’s manager confirmed the development to ESPNCricinfo. The right-arm spinner was a part of Rajasthan’s troika of spinners including India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. He played six matches last season for the 2008 winners, claiming eight wickets at 23.50 including 3/22 in Rajasthan Royals’ win against Chennai Super Kings.

Zampa’s withdrawal depletes Rajasthan’s bowling attack further since they are already without fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who underwent surgery on his left proximal quadriceps tendon late in February and was subsequently ruled out of this year’s IPL.

Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad replaced MS Dhoni as the skipper of Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2024.

The announcement came after Gaikwad attended the captains’ meeting ahead of this year’s competition in Chennai on Thursday.

MS Dhoni was the captain of CSK since the inaugural season of IPL and he has won the title five times – the joint-most by any skipper alongside Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma.

Gaikwad, who has played six ODIs and 19 T20s for India, made his CSK debut in 2020 and has gone on to represent the five time IPL champions in 52 games. The right-handed opener had a memorable run last year, aggregating 590 runs in 16 games at an impressive strike rate of 147.50.

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is past the halfway mark in the league stages. The league stage, which consists of 45 matches, has completed 23 matches as of October 24 and has seen some sparkling cricketing action across multiple venues. Hosts India are the only team without a defeat, while every other team has picked up at least one win. Defending champions England are struggling to make their mark, with one win in four matches, while Afghanistan are on the surge, with two wins against two former world champions.

The individual performances in the tournament have been a sight to behold, which are driving teams on the path to the most coveted trophy in cricket. Here’s a look at the best XI of players at the ICC World Cup 2023 at the halfway stage.

1. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is batting with the highest strike-rate among all openers in the tournament. The Indian skipper amassed 311 runs in five matches at an average of 62.20 and a magnificent strike-rate of 133.47. His tally includes one blazing century against Afghanistan and a half-century against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma also has the most sixes in the tournament so far, with 17 of his hits going out of the park.

2. Quinton de Kock

A contender for the Player of the Tournament award, Quinton de Kock is batting like a dream at the ICC World Cup 2023. De Kock, who is set to retire from ODIs after this tournament, has already smashed three centuries and has accumulated 407 runs in five matches at an average of 81.40 and a strike-rate of 114.97. His three centuries so far have come against Sri Lanka, Australia and England.

3. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli, often hailed as the king of run chases, is living up to that prestigious title in the ongoing tournament. With 354 runs in five matches, he is second only to Quinton de Kock in the run-scoring charts. Kohli is averaging a staggering 118 so far and is batting at a strike-rate of 90.53. In the five matches, he has scored one century against Bangladesh and three half-centuries, missing out on a 50+ score only once.

4. Mohammad Rizwan

Although Pakistan have had a disappointing tournament so far, Mohammad Rizwan’s exploits with the bat have been a redeeming feature. With 302 runs in five matches at an average of 75.50, Rizwan is one of the top five run-scorers in the tournament. The highlight of his campaign has been the match-winning century against Sri Lanka, which saw Pakistan complete the biggest chase in World Cup history.

5. Daryll Mitchell

New Zealand’s Daryll Mitchell is one of the most underrated players in the tournament right now. The 32-year-old batter is making a stellar contribution to the Kiwis with his power-hitting in the middle order, scoring 268 runs in five matches until now. He averages a whopping 89.33 at a strike-rate of 108.06. He made one terrific century against India and smashed a 67-ball 89 against Bangladesh.

6. Heinrich Klaasen

One of the best strikers in world cricket right now, Heinrich Klaasen is lighting up the World Cup with his power-hitting. The South African batter is in the form of his life and has scored 288 runs in five matches so far. His strike-rate of 150.79 is the best in the tournament (minimum 50 runs) and his tally includes one century and one half-century.

7. Marco Jansen

Marco Jansen has established himself as a trustworthy all-rounder in this tournament. The tall lanky fast bowler has been among the wickets regularly, scalping 10 in five matches so far. However, his 123-run contribution at a strike-rate of 126.80 has added great depth to South Africa’s batting, making him a lethal finisher for the side.

8. Mitchell Santner

Not many would’ve expected Mitchell Santner to make his case as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament at the halfway stage. But after match No. 23, it is the Kiwi left-arm spinner who takes the top spot with 12 wickets in five matches at an average of 16.91 and an economy of 4.25. Santner has also scored 44 runs with the bat at a strike-rate of 183.33.

9. Adam Zampa

After a poor start to the tournament, Adam Zampa has slowly stamped his authority on the pitches that offer great help to spinners. The Australian leggie has picked up nine wickets in five matches at an average of 24.78 and maintains an economy of 6.19. Zampa’s spells against Sri Lanka (4/47) and Pakistan (4/53) were crucial in the five-time champions’ resurgence in the tournament.

10. Jasprit Bumrah

Possibly the best fast bowler in the tournament right now, Jasprit Bumrah’s lethal and economical spells have given India a great edge in the five matches so far. Bumrah picked up 11 wickets in five matches at an average of 16.27 and his economy of 3.81 is the best among all bowlers who bowled 10 overs or more. Bumrah was named Player of the Match against Pakistan, where he returned with figures of 2/19.

11. Matt Henry

Matt Henry is making great use of the Indian conditions, although they are not the friendliest for fast bowlers. The Kiwi speedster has 10 wickets to his credit in five matches, at an average of 21.70 and a splendid economy of 5.10. His best figures in the tournament came against Netherlands (3/40) and England (3/48), where he picked up some prized scalps and saw his team through to a win.

]]>

Glenn Maxwell waltzed his way to the fastest World Cup century after David Warner hit his second successive hundred as Australia crushed the Netherlands by 309 runs — the biggest in tournament history — to continue their winning run in New Delhi on Wednesday. The winning run margin was also the second biggest in ODI cricket after India’s 317-run victory over Sri Lanka earlier this year. Australia bettered their own 275-run win over Afghanistan in the 2015 World Cup at home to notch up the biggest run-margin win in the showpiece’s history.

After opener Warner laid the foundation with a 92-ball 104, Maxwell went on a six-hitting spree, hammering 106 off 44 balls, as Australia displayed their batting might to amass a mammoth 399 for 8 after opting to bat.

Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschagne (62) also returned to form with resolute fifties but it was Maxwell who stole the show in the end.

Maxwell reached the hundred in 40 balls to surpass South African Aiden Markram’s 49-ball ton which also came at the same venue during this World Cup against Sri Lanka. He hit nine fours and eight sixes during his stunning innings, which was also the fourth fastest hundred in ODI cricket.

With a mountain to climb, the Netherlands folded for 90 in 21 overs with Vikramjit Singh top-scoring with a run-a-ball 25 at the top.

It was Australia’s third win on the trot, consolidating their position in the top four with six points with New Zealand and England in line in their next matches.

For the Netherlands, it was their fourth loss, leaving them at the bottom position in the 10-team event.

Warner, who captains the Delhi Capitals in IPL, used his cut shot to good use and was also quick between the wickets as his innings was studded with 11 hits to the fence and three maximums.

He was involved in two big partnerships — 132 with Smith and 84 with Labuschagne — as Australia kept a steady run rate, keeping it above six run per over throughout the innings.

The Dutch might have nurtured hopes of a fight back briefly as Australia lost three wickets in 19 balls to slip from 244 for 2 to 267 for 5 but Maxwell forged a 103-run stand off 43 balls with Pat Cummins (12 not out) to take Australia just one run short of 400.

Maxwell’s blitzkrieg saw Australia accumulate 131 in the last 10 overs as he used his array of shots, including the reverse sweeps and switch-hits, to completely shatter the Dutch bowling.

The spin all-rounder raced to fifty in 26 balls before completing his hundred in the next 13 deliveries as the 48th and 49th overs produced 21 runs and 28 runs respectively.

His carnage left Dutch all-rounder Bas de Leede scarred as he ended up conceding 115 runs to go with his two wickets in his quota of 10 overs, the most expensive ODI spell in history.

Logan van Beek (4/74) was the highest wicket-taker for the Netherlands.

Chasing 400, the Netherlands races to 27 in the three overs before Mitchell Starc cleaned up Max ODowd for his 56th wicket in ODI World Cups, levelling Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga in joint third position.

Maxwell then produced a direct hit to remove Vikramjit Singh, while Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins also chipped in as wickets kept tumbling too quickly.

An air-borne Warner got rid of Sybrand Engelbrecht with a stunning catch off Mitchell Marsh, who also accounted for Teja Nidamanuru. Adam Zampa then picked up his third successive four-wicket haul.

Earlier, in a bold decision, the Netherlands introduced twin spin attack but Warner took Aryan Dutt to the cleaners with four successive fours on the off side.

Logan van Beek struck the first blow with a short ball to get rid of Mitchell Marsh (9) but Smith, who has been struggling so far, stepped up. He pulled and drove Paul van Meekeren for two fours before picking three successive boundaries off van Beek as Australia scored 66 for one in first powerplay.

After surviving a run-out chance, Warner clobbered the first six of the innings over deep midwicket. He then deposited Vikramjit over long on to bring up the team hundred and reached his fifty with a four next, before hitting another boundary.

Smith too picked up his first fifty as 124 came up in 20 overs.

Warner got another life when Roelof van der Merwe grassed a catch. Aryan finally broke the stand with van der Merwe holding on this time to dismiss Smith. It put a break on the Australian as 22 runs came from 23rd to 28th overs.

Labuschagne kept Australia ticking, with his innings of seven fours and two sixes. He was dismissed by de Leede, who also got rid of Josh Inglis (14).

After Warner was holed out to Aryan off van Beek after completing his century and Cameron Green was run out next, it seemed the Dutchmen will drag back the Australians.

But Maxwell had other ideas as he sent the Dutchmen on a leather hunt with a sensational blitzkrieg.

Australia thrashed Pakistan by 62 runs in their ODI World Cup 2023 match on Friday. The fiery 259-run partnership between David Warner (163) and Mitchell Marsh (121) helped Australia post a massive total of 367/9. Later, Pakistan openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq provided them with a good start but Adam Zampa‘s four-wicket haul gave Australia an upper hand and Pakistan got bundled out for 305. Apart from being a high-scoring encounter, this match also grabbed a lot of limelight for the stunning catch by Pat Cummins to dismiss Babar Azam.

In the 27th over of Pakistan’s chase, Babar played a pull shot towards the mid-wicket off Adam Zampa’s delivery but failed to time it properly. Suddenly, the Australia skipper dived to his right side and took a marvelous catch.

Babar, who got dismissed for 18 off 14 balls, was left dumbstruck after seeing the brilliant catch as he gave a disappointing smile before walking back to the dugout.

Talking about the match, brutal hundreds by Warner (163 off 124 balls) and Marsh (121 off 108 balls) led Australia to an imposing 367 for 9. Pakistan batters fought valiantly but could only manage 305 as leg-spinner Zampa (4/53) inflicted blows at vital junctions.

Australia need to profusely thank both Warner, who hammered his 21st ODI hundred, and Marsh, his second ton, for keeping their World Cup campaign on track with a blistering assault.

The Aussie openers amassed 259 runs in just 203 balls, and it was only the fourth instance in World Cup history that both openers notched centuries in the same match.

Australia needed a dominant show to spruce up their confidence after three middling efforts that fetched two defeats and a win in this tournament, and they did it with a bang.

The only spanner in their easy rollicking was left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, whose five-wicket haul (5/54) was just a sad reminder as to what other Pakistan bowlers could have done with a bit of thinking.
