Zimbabwe vs Pakistan 2nd T20I, Highlights: A clinical all-round effort from Pakistan helps them thrash Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in the second T20I of the three-match series and take an unassailable 2-0 lead. Chasing a paltry score of 58 for the win, the openers came out all guns blazing and got the job done inside six overs. Saim Ayub made a quick fire 36 off 18 while Omair Yousuf chipped in with 22. Not a lot to talk about the Zimbabwe bowling as they did not have any runs on the board and it was a day to forget for the home side. (Scorecard)

Pakistan’s hopes of avoiding a sixth straight Test defeat were shattered on Friday as England claimed a win by an innings and 47 runs in Multan. Pakistan trail 0-1 in the three-match series, but this isn’t the only concern for a team that has not won a Test in over 1,331 days. Batters have not been able to lead from the front, while the bowlers have been hiding behind the debate of “lifeless tracks”. Amid criticism of the players, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria is the latest to jump the gun.

While analysing the match, Kaneria highlighted the lack of quality players in the side. He also lashed out at star batter Babar Azam for making England bowlers look world-class on a batting-friendly track. Pakistan (556) and England (823/7d) scored a combine 1,379 runs in the first innings.

“I feel like abusing them. You conceded 800+ runs. Even I have played cricket on such dead tracks. Where is our reverse swing? where is our bouncers? where are our spinners? It seems like all the spinners in Pakistan have died. Even fast bowlers are finished. There is not even a single bowler who could’ve clocked 140 kmph, let alone 150 kmph. Babar Azam is twerking on such lifeless tracks,” Kaneria said in a video on his YouTube channel.

The 43-year-old labelled the defeat in Multan as the “funeral of Pakistan cricket”. The former leggie, who took 261 wickets in 61 Tests, also questioned mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed‘s role in the team. Kaneria was harsh in his criticism of Abrar, who according to him is just like any other spinner in club cricket.

“Pakistan’s club cricket is full of bowlers like Abrar. What kind of a mystery spinner is he? It’s beyond my understanding. You guys have ruined Pakistan cricket. We used to be a top-ranked team, but now we are bottom of the pile. Even we played on such tracks. Never got humiliated like this. Who will take the responsibility? You guys can’t even show your face in public. This is a global mockery. The funeral of Pakistan cricket has taken place,” he added.

Pakistan’s legspinner Abrar Ahmed is being treated in hospital after being taken ill, according to ESPNcricinfo. Abrar, who bowled 31 overs on Day 3 of the opening Test against England, complained of body aches and a high fever on the morning of Day 4. He didn’t take up the field for the entire Day 4. According to ESPNcricinfo, a statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said he had undergone a number of tests, and a further update would be issued once the results were received. On Day 3, Abrar was at the receiving end of the bashing that English batters delivered on a scorching day in Multan. He went wicketless and conceded 174 runs at an economy of 5.00, which was the story for the majority of Pakistan bowlers.

Abrar was the sole frontline bowler in Pakistan’s attack who went wicketless in the first inning. His performance is in complete contrast to the one that he delivered against England two years ago, where he scythed a whopping 11 wickets.

Abrar has been haunted by injuries since making his professional debut for the Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League. He made his first appearance for Zalmi as an 18-year-old. Abrat then went out to spend a couple of years on the sidelines due to a persistent injury.

He sustained a nerve injury before Pakistan toured Australia and went on to miss the three Tests.

Coming back to the opening Test in Multan, Joe Root and Harry Brook forged a record-breaking 454-run partnership that allowed England to exude control.

England eventually declared on 823/7 in reply to Pakistan’s first-inning total of 556 runs. The batting masterclass helped England assail to a 267-run lead on a batting paradise.

Pakistan’s history of succumbing to pressure kicked in as they lost six wickets in the final session to an inspired English bowling attack for a score of 15/6, still trailing by 115 runs.

If Abrar fails to take the field on Day 5, Pakistan will be forced to end the game with 10 players.

As a result, they could lose the game even if they lose nine wickets. ICC only allows substitutions in case of a concussion.

Pakistan are all set to face Bangladesh in the upcoming two-match Test series, with the first match being played from Wednesday in Rawalpindi. The two Tests against Bangladesh will mark the first assignment of Jason Gillespie as Pakistan’s Test coach. On Monday, Pakistan announced their Playing XI for the first Test and they have benched their only spinner Abrar Ahmed from the team. Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal slammed the Pakistan management for going ahead without any spinner.

Apart from Abrar, batter Kamran Ghulam has also been benched as the selectors have named them in the Pakistan Shaheens’ squad, which will be squaring off against Bangladesh A on August 30.

The absence of Abrar means that Pakistan will be going ahead with a complete pace attack in the first Test. The only spin options left for Pakistan in their XI are all-rounder Salman Ali Agha and Saud Shakeel.

Akmal criticised the selectors for not including a spinner. He even gave the example of India, stating that they will never going ahead in a Test match without Ravindra Jadeja or Ravichandran Ashwin.

“With Jason Gillespie (Pakistan’s Test head coach), we are talking about the Australian mindset. But can Australia play without Nathan Lyon? Will India play without Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja? No, they won’t. You have Abrar, but you have shut down his confidence so much,” Akmal told Cricket Pakistan.

“Due to personal likes and dislikes, that boy (Abrar) has been ruined. His fitness and off-the-field issues were highlighted, and because of that, you’ve spoiled that boy and harmed Pakistan,” he added.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Ali are the top four pacers for Pakistan who will play against Bangladesh in the first Test match. Meanwhile, Saud Shakeel and Salman Ali Agha will be the hosts’ spin bowlers.

Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub will open for Pakistan, while captain Shan Masood and Babar Azam will be in action in the middle order.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has released spinner Abrar Ahmed and top-order batter Kamran Ghulam from the Pakistan squad for the first Test and he will now represent Pakistan Shaheens in the second four-day match against Bangladesh ‘A’, which will start at the Islamabad Club on Tuesday, 20 August. Ghulam has been appointed as Pakistan Shaheens captain for the second four-day match.

“The decision has been made after the selectors have opted to go with an all-pace attack in the first ICC World Test Championship match against Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on August 21. Instead of benching him for the Test, the selectors named him in the Shaheens squad so that he can gain some match practice ahead of the second Test, which will start in Karachi on August 30,” the PCB said in a release.

This means the Pakistan Test has been trimmed to 15 players, but will be back to its original 17-player strength after the conclusion of the second four-day match when Abrar and Kamran will rejoin the side for the Karachi visit.

Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Saud Shakeel, who were part of the Pakistan Shaheen side, have now joined the Test side while Mohammad Rameez Jnr has been left out for the second four-day match. These eight players have been replaced in the Shaheens side by Abrar Ahmed, Ali Zaryab Asif, Awais Anwar, Imam Ul Haq, Niaz Khan, Qasim Akram, Rohail Nazir and Sharoon Siraj.

Pakistan Shaheens squad (for second four-day): Kamran Ghulam (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Ali Zaryab, Ghulam Mudassar, Imam-ul-Haq, Mehran Mumtaz, Mohammad Awais Anwar, Niaz Khan, Qasim Akram, Rohail Nazir (wicket-keeper), Saad Baig (wicket-keeper), Saad Khan, Sharoon Siraj and Umar Amin.
