Cricketing fans worldwide are set to celebrate as South African icon AB de Villiers announces his long-awaited return to the sport after nearly four years. De Villiers, revered as one of the most innovative and electrifying cricketers of all time, will lead the Game Changers South Africa Champions in the second edition of the World Championship of Legends (WCL). This premier T20 tournament, featuring retired and non-contracted cricket legends, promises a nostalgic yet exhilarating spectacle for fans across the globe.

Reflecting on his return, de Villiers said, “Four years ago, I retired from all cricket because I just didn’t feel the urge to play any more. Well, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game. We’ve been playing more and more often in the garden, and, well, it feels as though some kind of flame has been lit again,” as quoted from a release by WCL.

“So I am heading back to the gym and the nets, and I’ll be ready for WCL in July,” he added.

Known for his unmatched versatility and fearless batting, de Villiers’ comeback has ignited excitement within the cricketing fraternity. The Game Changers squad, which featured legends such as Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Dale Steyn, and Imran Tahir in the inaugural season, now has an even brighter future under de Villiers’ captaincy.

Amandeep Singh , Co-Owner of South Africa Champions & Founder of Game Changers shared his excitement:

“We are honoured to compete in the World Championship of Legends and showcase the incredible talent of our cricketing greats. AB de Villiers’ return as our captain is a monumental boost for our team, and his leadership will undoubtedly inspire us to new heights,” Singh said.

Harry Singh, Co-Owner of South Africa Champions added, “AB de Villiers is not just a player; he’s an icon who has inspired millions around the world. His decision to lead our team is a testament to his love for the game, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board. This marks a historic moment for the team and the league,” as quoted from a release by WCL.

Harshit Tomar, Founder and CEO of the World Championship of Legends, expressed his enthusiasm, “This is precisely why we launched the WCL – to bring back the legends we deeply miss. As a fan of AB de Villiers, I’m thrilled to see him return to the field. I’m sure cricket lovers in England and beyond will be delighted by his comeback.”

Nishant Pitti, Chief Patron of the WCL, “Our partnership with the World Championship of Legends is a celebration of cricket’s golden era. The return of AB de Villiers embodies the spirit of the league, and we are privileged to witness this iconic moment.”

‘Most Of Us Don’t Mind Seeing Australia Going Down’: South Africa Great On India’s Perth Test Win https://artifex.news/most-of-us-dont-mind-seeing-australia-going-down-south-africa-great-on-indias-perth-test-win-7126793/ Sun, 01 Dec 2024 08:18:23 +0000 https://artifex.news/most-of-us-dont-mind-seeing-australia-going-down-south-africa-great-on-indias-perth-test-win-7126793/ Read More “‘Most Of Us Don’t Mind Seeing Australia Going Down’: South Africa Great On India’s Perth Test Win” »

India started their defence of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a dominating victory in Perth. After a 3-0 loss to New Zealand, no Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, India selected a playing eleven which had four players playing in Australia for the first time, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja left out of the eleven. Being bowled out for 150 on day one of the match was enough to create doubts in minds of onlookers of India defending the BGT. But the visitors, captained by Jasprit Bumrah, reminded everyone of their all-famous bounceback abilities and came back from behind in emphatic style to record a monumental 295-run win over Australia.

Reacting to the win, South Africa legend AB de Villiers pointed out that many like to see Australia losing a match.

“It was a fascinating Test match. Nothing against the Aussies, but most of us around the world don’t mind seeing them going down every now and then,” de Villiers said.

“It was nice to see India start well; they needed to start well after the loss against New Zealand. That took a big dent in their confidence but coming out in the first Test, the most important thing was to adapt to the conditions, which they did exceptionally well.

“They fought back after the first innings, 150 all out, and really bowling well, Bumrah and the whole bowling attack coming together.”

The manner and margin of India’s famous win in Perth Stadium has given them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, which became their biggest Test win from the runs margin outside home. It’s also the second time India won the opening match of a Border-Gavaskar Trophy series after doing so in Adelaide in 2018.

Bumrah, the chief architect of India’s famous triumph in Perth, picked eight wickets, including the match-changing spell of 5-30, which gave them a 46-run lead and single-handedly blew away Australia.

England great James Anderson has shown interest in taking part in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 by signing up for the aution that is set to take place on November 23 and 24. The former England fast bowler, who retired from international cricket this summer and took up a coaching role, has registered for the auction at a base price of Rs 1.25 crore. While speaking about the pacer, South Africa great AB de Villiers drew a similarity between him and former India player MS Dhoni, who continues to play in IPL for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

De Villiers feels that the base price set by Anderson for himself is like a “pay cut”, something that Dhoni also took ahead of the upcoming season. Notably, Dhoni’s IPL salary was reduced from Rs 15 crore to Rs 12 crore ahead of IPL 2022. It got a further reduction this year as CSK have now retained him for a price of Rs 4 crore.

“It almost gives me a same kind of feeling with MS Dhoni that he decided to take a pay cut. Yes Jimmy, Rs 1.25 crores as a base price, which is not a lot for the status this guy has got. Maybe he will go for only 1.25 and still be prepared to go to India, leave his family for almost three months and maybe not even play a game and share a dressing room with some of the young Indian fast bowlers,” said de Villiers on his YouTube channel.

“I think it’s fantastic and I was one of the franchise owners and I could get Jimmy for INR 2-3 crores. I would take him purely because I believe that there’s a lot of experience that can be shared with some of the young players, and just his aura and the dressing room will give the bowling unit confident. This guy knows his game inside out,” he added.

Anderson ended up his international career as the most successful fast bowler in Test cricket with 704 wickets. But in a surprising move, the 42-year-old registered himself for the IPL 2025 auction.

“He is 42 years old and might not be able to execute as well on the park anymore, but he still knows exactly what’s required to win games of cricket with the ball in hand. What I think is I hope someone picks him up purely from an experience point of view almost having like a bowling captain in the change room where he plays a lot of games or not, it doesn’t really matter,” De Villiers said.

Andhra Pradesh and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy said that he admires star India batter Virat Kohli and former South Africa cricketer AB de Villiers. Nitish was called-up to the Indian squad after a solid Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with SRH, for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Though he could not play due to a sports hernia injury, he has created an impression strong enough to be considered for future series with a ‘Emerging Player of the Season’ award worthy performance in this year’s IPL, scoring 303 runs in 11 innings with two fifties at a strike rate of 143 and taking three wickets with his seam bowling.

The 21-year-old is now working his way back to full fitness as the new domestic season starts on September 5 with the Duleep Trophy.

Speaking to Star Sports, Nitish said that he has been a huge fan of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the last 10 years.

Nitish recalled when he first met Virat Kohli and only shook his hand and got his autograph. The 21-year-old further added that he hoped to play well against RCB, so that Kohli would notice him.

“I really admire Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. I’ve been a huge fan of RCB for the last 10 years. In 2023, I had the chance to meet Virat Kohli. I didn’t have much to ask him; I just wanted to shake his hand and get his autograph. In 2024, I was hoping to play well against RCB so that Virat Kohli would notice my game. Though I didn’t get to bat in that match, he remembered my name during the post-match handshake. That meant a lot to me,” Nitish was quoted in a release from Star Sports as saying.

Nitish started making waves Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy when he scored a triple ton against Tamil Nadu and 190 against a strong bowling attack of Karnataka and a quadruple ton against Nagaland, finishing the 2017-18 edition of the tournament with 1,237 runs.

Frustrated by his poor performances, in 2019, Nitish decided to play solely as a batter, but Srinivas Reddy, one of his coaches, encouraged him to continue as a bowler, pointing out the rarity of pace bowling all-rounders in India.

After that, Nitish was picked up for an ACA camp to pick up a pool of players for the 2019-20 domestic season. The all-rounder said that he was initially picked up as an understudy in the larger squad but the skipper, Hanuma Vihari, was impressed and pushed for his inclusion in the Ranji squad. He went on to make his Ranji debut against Kerala in January 2020.

Reddy was picked up SRH ahead of the 2023 IPL but got to play only two games in which he did not get to bat. In July last year, he was called up to India’s Emerging Players squad for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka but did not get to bat there either.

AB De Villiers Believes KKR Skipper Shreyas Iyer Has Been “Absolutely Incredible” In IPL 2024 https://artifex.news/ab-de-villiers-believes-kkr-skipper-shreyas-iyer-has-been-absolutely-incredible-in-ipl-2024-5684434/ Fri, 17 May 2024 12:42:17 +0000 https://artifex.news/ab-de-villiers-believes-kkr-skipper-shreyas-iyer-has-been-absolutely-incredible-in-ipl-2024-5684434/ Read More “AB De Villiers Believes KKR Skipper Shreyas Iyer Has Been “Absolutely Incredible” In IPL 2024” »

Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers showered praise on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer and said he has been “absolutely incredible” in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. In the IPL 2024, Iyer played 12 matches in the 17th season where he scored 287 runs at a strike rate of 135.38. The 29-year-old also became the first KKR skipper to finish at the top of the IPL points table. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, De Villiers called Iyer a “wise guy” and a “smart cricketer”. The former cricketer also praised the KKR skipper for not panicking in tough situations.

“Shreyas Iyer has been absolutely incredible. There have been a lot of doubts and talks about him as captain. I punted him from the start of the tournament. He is a wise guy, a smart cricketer and I love the way he is calm and composed as a captain. He never seems to get rushed, never seems to panic even though you know deep down that you feel some panic, especially playing at the Eden Gardens,” De Villiers said.

He added that it is not easy to captain a squad with senior players like Sunil Narine and Andre Russell.

“It’s not easy to captain senior players who have been around for ages, especially Narine and Russell. We know that the West Indies have got different personalities, they are outgoing and can be outspoken sometimes. It must be sometimes difficult with a difference in culture to communicate properly with some of these experienced players,” he added.

After winning 9 of 13 matches, KKR stand at the top of the IPL 2024 standings with 19 points and have a net run rate of 1.428. The Kolkata-based franchise only lost three matches in the 17th season which came against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Punjab Kings (PBKS).

In their upcoming match, KKR will take on Rajasthan Royals on Sunday at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati.

MS Dhoni Is A “Diesel Engine That Never Ends”: South Africa Great Praises CSK Captain https://artifex.news/ms-dhoni-is-a-diesel-engine-that-never-ends-south-africa-great-praises-csk-captain-5232977/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 06:51:58 +0000 https://artifex.news/ms-dhoni-is-a-diesel-engine-that-never-ends-south-africa-great-praises-csk-captain-5232977/ Read More “MS Dhoni Is A “Diesel Engine That Never Ends”: South Africa Great Praises CSK Captain” »

In awe of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s longevity, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has compared the legendary wicket-keeper batter to a “diesel engine that never ends”. It is incredibly difficult for a player to be playing at the highest level for so long. But Dhoni has been doing preciously that for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He is expected to lead the defending champions for the record 15th season during IPL 2024, having captained the side to a record-equalling fifth title last year.

“There were a lot of rumours about MS Dhoni finishing up last year; that was not the case, ladies and gentlemen. He would be back again.

“Will this be his final season? No one knows. He just seems to be this diesel engine that never ends. He keeps running. What an incredible player, what an incredible captain,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

CSK has been a force to reckon with, winning the most number of championships alongside Mumbai Indians and most of its success has been attributed to sticking to the core group of senior players.

“I believe it’s through their presence, it’s through the leadership of MSD, a calm coach in Stephen Fleming, senior players in Ravindra Jadeja and others who have really set this incredible culture alive.

“They are a very intimidating team to play against. They are never easy to beat. That is always a great characteristic of a very successful unit, of a very successful franchise.

“When you are playing well, it’s ‘Yes, no problem, no one’s gonna stop us’. But, when you are not playing so well, they always find a way to compete,” de Villiers added.

CSK get their IPL 2024 campaign underway versus Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on on March 22.

“Mumbai Indians needed Pandya to come back”

All-rounder Hardik Pandya returns to Mumbai Indians after two seasons and de Villiers feels his return will solve the five-time champions’ balance issues, provided he bowls.

The 30-year-old, who won four IPL titles with MI after joining the franchise in 2015, left the side in 2022 to play for new franchise Gujarat Titans.

He led the Titans to the title in their debut season while finishing runner up last year.

“Hardik Pandya – they needed him to come back; otherwise, the balance just didn’t look as strong. I think Hardik is going to play a huge role. Hopefully, he would be able to hold the ball in hand and be the all-rounder that Mumbai Indians need him to be,” stated de Villiers.
