The Anthiyur police on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) arrested a 19-year-old college student from Ulundurpet in Villupuram district on charges of abetment of suicide of a Plus One student in Anthiyur last month.

The accused was identified as M. Satheesh, a B.Sc. Computer Science student of a private college in Ulundurpet, who was allegedly responsible for the death of M. Dharani, 16-year-old girl from Thavittupalayam in Anthiyur taluk on April 22, 2026. Police said the two became acquainted through social media.

The girl’s parents on Monday (May 18, 2026) submitted a petition to the district administration alleging inaction on the part of the police in arresting the accused for 26 days. They claimed that he had allegedly harassed the girl and threatened her father over the phone. The girl had reportedly told her parents that the youth, with whom she had allegedly been in a relationship for the past four months, had threatened to misuse photographs taken earlier. The girl later ended her life, and her father alleged that the delay in police action had caused distress to the family.

Following the petition submitted by the girl’s parents, the district police formed a special team and nabbed the accused at Keel Thaniyalampattu village under the limits of the Thiruvennainallur police station in Villupuram district.

In a press release, the district police claimed that the accused had switched off his mobile phone and had been in hiding for five weeks, making it difficult to trace him. However, based on continuous efforts and specific information, the accused was secured on Monday night and brought to the Anthiyur police station.

In a handwritten note reportedly left by the girl, she stated that Satheesh had forced her to accept his proposal, following which she agreed to the relationship. She further stated that when she expressed reluctance to continue the relationship, he insisted on meeting her and she met him in Bhavani. According to the note, when she refused to take photographs with him, he assaulted her. The girl also alleged that when she sought to end the relationship, he abused her in foul language and threatened to misuse the photographs, which forced her to take the extreme step.

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court has said expressing disapproval for marriage does not amount to abetment of suicide under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma made the observation while quashing a chargesheet against a woman who was accused of abetting the suicide of another woman who was allegedly in love with her son.

The allegations were based on disputes between the victim and the appellant’s son, who had refused to marry her. The appellant was accused of opposing the marriage and making disparaging remarks against the victim

The court said even if all evidence on record, including the chargesheet and witness statements, are taken to be correct, there is not an iota of evidence against the appellant.

“We find that the acts of the appellant are too remote and indirect to constitute the offence under section 306, IPC. There is no allegation against the appellant of a nature that the victim was left with no alternative but to commit the unfortunate act of suicide,” the bench said.

The court said it is discerned from the record that the appellant, along with her family, did not attempt to put any pressure on the victim to end the relationship between her and the appellant’s son.

“In fact, it was the victim’s family that was unhappy with the relationship. Even if the appellant expressed her disapproval towards the marriage of Babu Das and the victim, it does not rise to the level of direct or indirect instigation of abetting suicide.

“Further, a remark such as asking the victim to not be alive if she cannot live without marrying her lover will also not gain the status of abetment. There needs to be a positive act that creates an environment where the victim is pushed to the edge in order to sustain the charge of section 306, IPC,” the bench said.
