Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has hit out at Marcus Stoinis for his sudden retirement from ODIs and questioned the timing of the decision and its impact on the team. Stoinis, who was initially named in Australia’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, announced his retirement from the format last week, forcing selectors to scramble for a replacement. Speaking on ESPN Australia’s Around The Wicket podcast, Finch expressed his disappointment over the lack of prior communication from Stoinis to the team management. He believes the all-rounder should have given coach Andrew McDonald and captain Steve Smith a heads-up before being selected in the squad.

“When you’ve had the faith put in you by the selection, the coach, and the captain—maybe a little bit more of a heads-up? Saying, ‘You know, this is what I am thinking.’ I would be surprised if it was an off-the-cuff decision as well. I’m sure there would have been planning down the track, and conversations between Andrew McDonald and Marcus Stoinis to try to get to the decision,” Finch said.

The all-rounder was part of Australia’s white-ball series against Pakistan, followed by the Big Bash League and then the SA20 in South Africa. With the IPL scheduled immediately after the Champions Trophy, Finch believes the prospect of being on the road for nearly five months might have contributed to Stoinis stepping away from ODIs.

“At the end of the day, each player has the opportunity to decide what their fate is going forward. If you look at Marcus Stoinis over the last couple of years, he’s preferred to play the T20 route. Being in Pakistan, then straight to India after a summer of cricket at home—that can potentially be four-five months on the road. Maybe that contributed to the decision,” Finch added.

Following Stoinis’ withdrawal, Australia named all-rounder Aaron Hardie as his replacement while finalising their 15-member squad on Wednesday.

Virat Kohli‘s tour of Australia did not go as per plan. While it started off brilliantly with a superb century at Perth, it ended on a sour note, full of controversy and doubts surrounding his form. In the fourth Test in Melbourne, Kohli got embroiled in a shoulder clash with Australia’s teenage debutant Sam Konstas, leading him to be fined 20 per cent of his match fees. Kohli also teased the Sydney crowd during the fifth Test with a ‘sandpaper’ reference. Speaking on these issues, former Australia cricketer Simon Katich – once the head coach of Kohli at Indian Premier League franchise (IPL) Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) – stated that Kohli had tarnished his reputation.

“There’s no doubt he (Kohli) has been a modern great of the game in all formats. But I think you have to question what sort of headspace he’s been in on this tour to be doing that, making physical contact in Melbourne and then even the other unsavoury incident in Sydney with the sandpaper reference there with the pockets,” Katich said on ESPN Australia’s Around The Wicket show.

“I mean that in itself – there was no need for that. It’s old news so in a way I think he’s tarnished his reputation somewhat on this tour, on and off the field,” Katich added.

Aaron Finch, who played with Kohli and under Katich at RCB in 2020, added to the sentiment.

“It was just a level of frustration. I said last week it seemed as though he wanted to find conflict and confrontation – that’s where he generally plays his best cricket. So he just went overboard on this tour. The bump (with Konstas), that was above and beyond anything I’ve seen on a field, and then the sandpaper, unnecessary. Overall, I think he was trying to find something to ignite a fire in himself, but just wasn’t up to it.,” Finch said.

Kohli scored just 190 runs in nine innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, repeatedly getting out to deliveries outside the off-stump.

Former Australian cricketer Aaron Finch said that star India batter Virat Kohli is trying to “pick up a fight” and is “trying to be antagonistic” because that is when he plays at his best and puts all his skills on the show. Virat has been a constant fixture in the media during this Border-Gavaskar Trophy, both due to his poor performances with the bat, which have seen him score just 167 runs across four Tests at an average of 27.83 with just a century to his name, and his physical altercation with young Aussie batter Sam Konstas, which cost the veteran his 20 per cent match fee and invited the anger of Australian media.

Speaking on ESPN’s Around the Wicket podcast, Finch said, “Virat is someone who has always thrived on pressure and he has thrived when his back is against the wall. It just feels like at this stage, he is trying to put his own back against the wall. He is trying to be antagonistic, he is trying to almost pick a fight because that is when he plays when he feels like someone’s coming at him. That is when he puts all his skills on show.”

“It just feels like he is pushing other people to make him feel like that and we have not seen the best of him in this series yet. He looked beautiful in the first innings at Melbourne and looked like he was not going to get out but Australia have bowled well,” he added.

This year, Virat has scored 417 runs at an average of just 24.52, with barely one century and fifty in 19 innings. His best score is 100*.

The decade of 2020s has been a difficult one for Virat the Test batter. In 38 Tests since the start of this decade, Virat has made 2,005 runs at an average of 31.32, with just three centuries and nine fifties to his name and best score of 186.

In the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, Virat has made 728 runs in 23 innings in 13 Tests at an average of 34.66, with two tons and three fifties in 23 innings and best score of 121.

However, in this series, Virat will get one more chance at redeeming himself in the fifth and final Test at Sydney, starting from January 3 onwards.

Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood will take no part in the pink-ball Test against India, starting in Adelaide on Friday, having been ruled out of the match owing to a side strain. Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers for Australia in the series-opener as he returned match figures of 5/57, but couldn’t evite a 295-run loss in Perth. He claimed four in the first innings as India were bowled for 150 in the first innings. However, Australia crumbled to 106 all out, giving India the upper hand which the visitors did not throw away.

Chasing 534 in the second innings, Australia slumped to 238 all out to lose the game by 295 runs.

Hazlewood, however, fueled rumours of a rift in the dressing room, having seemingly suggested at a press conference that the batters should be held responsible for the collapse.

As Hazlewood was ruled out of the day-night game in Adelaide, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar hinted that the pacer was dropped from the team, due to his remarks at the press conference.

“The panic in the Australian ranks is palpable, with former players calling for heads to be chopped off and some even hinting at cracks in the Australian team after Josh Hazlewood’s media interview at the end of the third day’s play, where he suggested that it was up to the batters to now do something,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

“Now, a few days later, Hazlewood is out of the second Test and possibly the series too with a supposed side strain. Strange, that, since nobody had noticed anything wrong with Hazlewood at that media conference. Mystery, mystery – the like of which used to be common in Indian cricket in the past. Now, it’s the Aussies and like Old McDonald, I’m simply loving it,” he added.

Reacting to the comments made by Gavaskar, Australia batter Travis Head hit back at the former India captain, labelling his comments as ‘funny’.

“I was surprised at Sunny’s comments. They were pretty funny. Dropping ‘Hoff’ (Hazlewood) and throwing a couple of daggers and shooting across the bow, but who cares? It is what it is. Everyone is paid to have an opinion,” Head told The Willow Talk Podcast.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch also rubbished the remarks made by Gavaskar.

“It’s not jabs anymore. Sunny is throwing haymakers over the top. It’s quite funny because, having spent a lot of time with him during the first test, he was not saying things like that. He was very respectful of the current Australian group. But now he has just gone bang,” Finch told ESPNcricinfo.

After the India vs New Zealand series at home results in a 3-0 loss for Rohit Sharma and co.’s men, the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, starting on November 22, holds extra significance for the side. India need to beat Australia in at least four Tests in the five-match series to qualify for the World Test Championship final without depending on other teams’ results. In the midst of this several reports claimed that skipper Rohit Sharma might miss the first Test due to a personal reason.

In response to those reports, Sunil Gavaskar had said that the team should appoint a new captain for the entire series if Rohit is unable to make it to the first couple of Tests.

“We have been reading that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test, perhaps he will not play in the second as well. If this is the case, then I say that, right now, the Indian selection committee should say that ‘if you have to rest, rest, if there are personal reasons then look at them. But if you are missing two-thirds of the matches then you should go for this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour’,” Gavaskar had told Sports Tak.

“Indian cricket is the most important. I would say that if we had won the New Zealand series 3-0, it would have been a different matter. Because we have lost this series 3-0, there is a need for a captain. The captain has to unite the team. If there is no captain in the beginning, it is better to make someone else the captain,” Gavaskar had further added.

However, former Australia Finch disagreed with Gavaskar’s opinion.

“I disagree with Sunny on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife is having a baby… that’s such a beautiful moment… and you take all the time that you need in that regard,” Finch told ESPNcricinfo.

Now, Rohit Sharma’s wife Ritika Sajdeh has appreciated Finch’s stance. She reacted with a ‘salute’ emoji tagging Aaron Finch on an Instagram post highlighting both Gavsakar and Finch’s comment.

India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar slammed his broadcaster Star Sports for using a graphic about Rohit Sharma‘s weakness against left-arm seamers during India’s Super 8 clash against Australia in the 2024 T20 World Cup. While Rohit’s flaws against left-arm seam are widely known, he smacked left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc for 29 runs in an over, en route to his 41-ball 92. However, after Starc did get Rohit out, Star Sports put up a graphic about Rohit’s dismissals against left-arm pacers, which left Gavaskar annoyed.

“Thinking about Rohit Sharma once again, he got out to a left-hander (left-arm seamer). So before the next match, are we going to do another segment about his weakness to left-handers?” asked a bewildered Gavaskar.

Aaron Finch, who was sitting next to Gavaskar in the commentary box, reasoned that there are a lot more left-arm pacers nowadays, with not only Starc for Australia, but also the likes of Trent Boult (New Zealand) and Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan).

“There are more left-armers playing now, and they are genuine swing bowlers. So that poses a challenge to the opening batter,” said Finch, trying to justify the graphic.

Gavaskar retorted, saying that it isn’t a problem worth highlighting.

“I don’t think you should be looking much into that. If you’re playing attacking shots when the ball is swinging in, you will be out LBW, you will be out bowled,” said Gavaskar, the first man to reach 10,000 Test runs.

While Rohit Sharma played one of the best innings of the 2024 T20 World Cup, his opening partner Virat Kohli got out for his second duck of the tournament. Gavaskar has recently come under attack on social media for his supposed biased analysis towards the dismissals of the two batters.

“Commentators create divide between players and the fans,” one user had tweeted, after Gavaskar criticised Kohli’s shot-selection against Bangladesh, whilst calling Rohit’s approach a selfless one.

Former Australian cricket team captain Tim Paine expressed his concern for Team India ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 and even served them a warning concerning star batter Virat Kohli. India are one of the firm favourites ahead of the competition but Paine believes that the campaign will depend heavily on how Kohli ends up performing.  Paine, in conversation with fellow countrymen Aaron Finch and Michael Clarke on the ‘Around the Wicket’ podcast, compared Kohli to Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell and said that if the India star fails to perform, Rohit and Co will not be able to win the title.

“I can’t see India winning the World Cup unless Virat Kohli has a really strong World Cup – bit similar to Glenn Maxwell’s form. I know he hasn’t been red-hot as of late but I can’t see Australia winning the World Cup unless Maxwell has a blinder,” Paine said on the podcast.

Recently, Kohli opened up about his retirement plans.

“I think as a sportsman, we do have an end-date to our careers. So I am just working backwards. I don’t want to finish my career thinking ‘oh, what if I have done this on that particular day’ because I can’t keep going on and on forever. So it’s just about not leaving any undone business behind and not have any regrets later, which I am sure I won’t,” said Kohli at RCB’s Royal Gala Dinner.

“Once I am done, I will be gone, you won’t see me for a while (smiles). So I want to give it everything I have till the time I play, and that’s the only thing that keeps me going,” he added.

Kohli is currently the run-scorer in the ongoing IPL 2024 and will be looking to guide Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the playoff with a win over five-time champions Chennai Super Kings.

It has been a disappointing IPL 2024 season for both Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians. The five-time champions became the first team to get eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoffs race and skipper Hardik was the one who faced the majority of criticism. Hardik completed a sensational move to MI from Gujarat Titans and replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain ahead of the new season. However, the decision was not taken well by a section of the fanbase and the dismal form of the side only led to the negative reactions towards Hardik.

The all-rounder was booed by fans at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and came under a lot of pressure for his disappointing run of form – both with bat as well as ball.

Former Australia cricketer Aaron Finch said that he expected Rohit Sharma to come out in support of Hardik Pandya when the all-rounder was booed by the fans. He also said that if Rohit publicly supported the change in captaincy, the fans would have supported Hardik during the season.

“Just the one thing that I would have loved to have seen from Rohit throughout the IPL campaign is to make some kind of public statement because the resentment towards Hardik from the public has been unbelievable – getting booed. And it’s changed to cheers when he walks out since the World Cup squad has been announced,” Finch said on Around the Wicket.

“But for eight games, Hardik was getting booed during a Mumbai Indians game. So I would have loved seeing Rohit come out and say something publicly. Say ‘No, this is part of the plan for Mumbai Indians, and Hardik’s got my full support. Just think that would have put things to be a lot more quickly.”

Mumbai Indians have won just four out of their 13 matches in IPL 2024 till now.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru returned to winning ways with a victory against high-flying Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Batting first, RCB managed to put over 200 runs on the board, with Virat Kohli contributing 51 runs. But, it was Rajat Patidar who bagged the Player of the Match award, having also scored a half-century, but at a much higher strike-rate in comparison. As RCB’s batting ended, an intense chatter around Kohl’s intent and strike-rate began, with the star batter getting criticised for his 43-ball 51. (IPL 2024 Points Table)

After the powerplay, Virat found it incredibly tough to hit boundaries, resulting in a big slowdown in his strike-rate. In fact, he only scored 19 runs from the last 25 deliveries he faced. Delving on the subject, former RCB and Australia batter Aaron Finch said that Kohli’s knock shouldn’t be looked at in isolation.

“I think it is a combination of a few things here. Yes, he got off to an absolute flyer. But after the powerplay, he dropped to 19 from 25. But one thing you have to keep in mind is that Patidar was going crazy at the other end. Sometimes your job as a set batter is to take the game a little bit deeper and get Patidar on strike as much as possible. That’s where the intent to hit boundaries goes out,” said Finch on Star Sports.

While there’s no denying that there was a sharp decline in Virat’s strike-rate in the second-half of his innings, Finch said that sometimes batters tend to do that seeing their partner at the other end of the pitch going all guns blazing.

“You can look at him in isolation and say ‘yes it dropped.’ But as a partnership, it worked really well. Because the last thing you want when you’re on fire is to be stuck at the non-striker’s end a lot. He did the right thing by getting Patidar up there,” asserted Finch.

With just one win in eight matches, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are on the brink of early elimination from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Just one more defeat in the remainder of the campaign could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the Faf du Plessis-led side. But, it’s not just this season that RCB have struggled to fire, their story has been the same for the most part of IPL history. Aaron Finch, a former Australia captain who played for RCB in the past, explained the core reasons behind the franchise’s consistently poor performances in the T20 league. (IPL 2024 Points Table)

In a show on Star Sports, Finch pinpointed the auction strategy as one of the biggest reasons behind the Bengaluru side’s underwhelming show in the IPL. Finch highlighted how the RCB management tends to spend heavy on batters while leaving little budget to sing a top bowler, especially spinner.

“I think there have been a couple of reasons, hasn’t gone well, and I think it does start off with the auction table when you put so much emphasis on your batting group and doesn’t leave a huge amount of room for your bowling. The lack of world-class spinner I guess it’s something and proven in the game against KKR, Sunil Narine is a world-class operator and he’s somebody who gets the job done day in day out. It’s just that lack of a spinner there to be relied on consistently,” Aaron Finch said.

Finch also questioned the team management’s decision to play Cameron Green in the middle despite knowing that it isn’t the Australian all-rounder’s best position.

“I think they have got some issues with playing players out of position at times, I mean Cameron Green to trade for him for such a big price, for such a big percentage of a salary cap, to then bat him in the middle-order where is not as comfortable as batting at the top is is a real strange move. You’re asking a guy to do a job which he is not comfortable with from the start so you’re not setting him up for the ultimate success in my opinion,” Finch asserted.

Languishing at the bottom of the 10-team points table, RCB need a miracle from here to enter the playoffs.
