Pakistan’s group stage exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup has created a meltdown among several former cricketers and experts. But none have been as telling as the revelation from Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten about a lack of unity within the current Pakistan unit. Led by Babar Azam – who regained captaincy from Shaheen Afridi prior to the T20 World Cup – Pakistan crashed out after losses to USA and India. With rumours of groupism within the team, and following Gary Kirsten’s leaked outburst, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has made a witty comment about the situation.

“It worked like ghee on fire,” quipped Aakash Chopra, talking about the fact that anything can get leaked in the Pakistani media, and that it is very difficult to keep secrets after a poor tournament.

“Gary Kirsten has probably said that he didn’t say anything like that but Pakistan cricket is like a strainer. Whatever you put, it leaks from the other end,” Chopra said.

Kirsten – a World Cup-winning coach with Pakistan’s arch-rivals India in 2011 – had reportedly said that the lack of unity within the Pakistan team is something he’d never seen the like of.

“There’s no unity in Pakistan’s team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated, left and right. I’ve worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation,” Kirsten had reportedly said, in a leak by Geo News.

Despite Kirsten denying that he had made these statements, the possibility of Kirsten’s complaints being leaked paints a poor image of Pakistan’s media at a time when the cricket team is struggling for support.

“When a private conversation within a dressing room is leaked… it exposes the insecurity within,” tweeted reputed journalist Harsha Bhogle.

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh – a part of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team under Kirsten – asked his former coach to come back to the Men In Blue.

“Don’t waste your time there Gary, come back to coach Team INDIA,” Harbhajan posted on X.

India continue their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign with their first Super 8 clash against Afghanistan on June 20.

Former India cricket team opener Gautam Gambhir is reportedly leading the race to replace Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the men’s national side. Gambhir gave his interview to the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Tuesday, and another round is reportedly set to be held on Wednesday. As the cricket world waits for the official announcement, it’s being said that Gambhir is the overwhelming favourite for the job. With the Kolkata Knight Riders mentor looking set for the job, former India opener Aakash Chopra has fired a warning to ageing India stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja.

“Gautam Gambhir has given the interview. It’s been said that it was a virtual interview as opposed to WV Raman, who gave a fantastic presentation. I have just read that. Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner in this race. It’s been said everywhere and we have also understood that,” Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“I am saying it will be an interesting tenure because you will have to manage the transition here, and that is never an easy thing. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, maybe Ravindra Jadeja, especially their roles in T20s, there are plenty of people who are on the wrong side of 30, 35 to 37, including Ravichandran Ashwin,” he added.

Gambhir’s contract, if awarded, will run until the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup. In this period, many current superstars of the team will be closer to 40s than to 30s. Hence, Chopra feels some big calls could be taken as the roadmap for the future is prepared.

“In the next three to four years, when the 2027 World Cup comes, you have to prepare your team for that. There will also be a WTC in 2027 and a T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026. So a very important roadmap will have to be prepared,” he said.

“It’s not going to be easy because it’s said that transitions are most difficult. A very important job is to not let performances drop when transitions are happening. Secondly, transitions happen properly when you communicate well because you need to explain the reasons to players who are being retained and let go of,” Chopra asserted.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra feels star batter Rohit Sharma and young wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan might not play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). There has been an uncertainity over Rohit’s future at MI ever since he was relieved of his captaincy duties by franchise. MI appointed Hardik as captain for IPL 2024 but the five-time champions endured a disastrous season, finishing at the bottom of the 10-team points table. Sharing his views on MI’s possible strategy for IPL 2025 mega auction, Chopra suggested that Rohit might’ve played his last game for the franchise.

He also added that keeper-batter Kishan might be released by the team due to his price tag. However, he suggested that MI might use the ‘Right to Match’ card on Kishan if needed.

“I think they will let Ishan Kishan go. They might use the ‘Right to Match’ card because 15.5 crores is just too much money. I don’t think Ishan will be retained,” the ex India cricketer said on his YouTube channel.

“I think Rohit Sharma has played his last match for the Mumbai Indians, whether he doesn’t want to be retained or the franchise lets him go,” he added.

“Either way, I see them parting ways. I don’t think you will be seeing Rohit Sharma in the Mumbai Indians jersey again. That’s just my understanding. I might be wrong but I feel, either which way, Rohit Sharma will not be playing for the Mumbai Indians when you start the next season,” he further explained.

The next assignment for Rohit will be to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. India will face Ireland in their tournament opener on June 5.

Hardik’s inclusion in the squad was a matter of discussion among experts but the selectors decided to show trust in the all-rounder as he was appointed the vice-captain.

As the speculation on who’ll be the next Indian cricket team head coach gains steam, there are several names that are doing the rounds. Current coach Rahul Dravid will be at the helm till the 2024 T20 World Cup, which runs till June-end. The tenure of the next coach will start from July and will run till December 31, 2027. An advertisement to apply for the post has already been released by the BCCI. The deadline to submit it is May 27. From CSK coach Stephen Fleming to DC coach Ricky Ponting to KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir, the names that are doing the rounds are varied.

ESPN Cricinfo recently reported that Gambhir was approached by the BCCI for the India coach’s job. The report further said the more discussions will take place after Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2024 engagement gets over.

Gautam Gambhir’s former Delhi state teammate Aakash Chopra, however, raised an important issue. he said that if there are seniors in the side, Gambhir’s style of coaching may not suit the Indian cricket team.

“Not a bad choice, there is no doubt about that, because he is a straightforward person. He knows how to manage and build a team. I really rate him high when it comes to the auction. However, there will be no auction for the Indian team,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“Gautam Gambhir – the coach, Very strong personality. When there is a transition, a new captain is coming, then yes. However, if the team has a lot of seniors already, I will be a little wary because Gauti’s style of working is almost like a strict father. When the father is strict, the children have to be a little careful,” Chopra added.

“When you have very senior players in the team, you are looking for a big brother who keeps his hand on their shoulders and doesn’t try to impose himself. With Gautam that’s not going to happen. It’s very simple with him. My way or the high way. When it’s ‘my way’ then every time, especially when seniors are there, things may not always fall your way. You can do that with young players. That is what I feel.”

Gambhir has never coached a side at the domestic level but he was the mentor for IPL side Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023 before joining KKR ahead of the 2024 season. During his time with LSG, the side reached the playoffs twice and he repeated the feat once again with KKR this season.

As a player, Gambhir was part of the Indian cricket team which won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. He produced brilliant performances in the final of the both tournaments.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has slammed “fan-armies” for attributing a fake quote regarding India captain Rohit Sharma to him. In the viral post, a fan account claimed that Chopra wanted Rohit’s exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad. However, Chopra denied making any such comments. Instead, he lashed out at the user for misquoting him. “Aakash Chopra said Rohit Sharma shouldn’t have selected for T20 World Cup. He’s now even failing in powerplay,” a post claimed on X.

However, Chopra fumed at fan-armies for spreading fake news, and questioned if views and engagement is more important than morals.

“IPL is the best time to spread hate, fake news…and all sorts of rubbish.
Fan-armies are there to lap it up always. I often wonder if views/engagement is more important than the morals,” Chopra posted on X.

Meanwhile, Rohit will lead India’s 15-man squad at the T20 World Cup, also consisting of four travelling reserves.

After skipping T20Is for more than a year, Rohit made his return to the T20I side earlier this year during the series against Afghanistan.

Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Rohit opened up on his break from T20Is, saying that he wanted to focus on the longer formats.

“When T20 World Cup was happening, we missed a lot of T20Is. Test cricket is a format that you don’t want to miss and give priority to. That’s what we discussed with the players and the coaches too. Ajit came later. He doesn’t know what was discussed. Whichever format happens, we give priority to that format. As 50 over World Cup was happening, we missed a lot of T20Is,” Rohit on missing T20Is after T20 World Cup 2022.

It’s been a couple of days since the Indian cricket team for the 2024 T20 World Cup has been announced. Quite interestingly, most players who have been named in the squad have not been performing well since their inclusion for the marquee event. And that includes India captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Hardik Pandya. On Friday, their IPL 2024 team Mumbai Indians lost to Kolkata Knight Riders to be placed on the brink of elimination. Rohit Sharma, named as an impact substitute, scored only 11 as MI failed to chase down 170.

Pandya was out for 1 and conceded 44 runs in four overs picking two wickets. For Rohit Sharma, this was the fourth consecutive low score in the IPL 2024. His scores in the last three matches have been – 6 (vs RR), 8 (vs DC) and 4 (vs LSG).

Former India and KKR player Aakash Chopra raised the issue in a video.

“Whoever has been named in the T20 World Cup squad, Yashasvi Jaiswal is the only exception, nobody is doing anything. I know Jasprit Bumrah picked three wickets vs KKR, Suryakumar Yadav also made runs (56) , okay fine. You get the drift right. Rohit is our captain, he gets out. For the fourth consecutive time, he failed. Rajasthan, Delhi, Lucknow and now Kolkata. Four consecutive innings where he has not scored runs,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“Then Hardik Pandya comes to bat at No. 7, Tim David at No. 8. Why? Is it about left-right combination. If there is no left-right combination, will you stop batting or what?”

India will begin their World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 05, 2024 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, followed by the marquee clash against Pakistan on June 09, 2024 at the same venue. India will then play USA and Canada on June 12 and 15 respectively.

Squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Hardik Pandya (Vice Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj.

Reserves – Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan

Former Indian cricket team batter Aakash Chopra was not pleased with how Punjab Kings approached the chase and even criticised how the team used their in-form batter Shashank Singh during their loss against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. Chasing 193, PBKS lost four wickets quite early and it was an explosive knock from Ashutosh Sharma that took them close before falling short by nine runs. Shashank Singh has been the most successful batter for the franchise in this year’s IPL and Chopra believes that not playing him in the top order and just treating him as a finisher can be a big issue for the team.

“When your team is 14/4, it seems like the match can’t be won because you are too far behind, and your four main players’, whom you consider your main players, innings’ have ended. Shashank comes in such a situation and Jitesh (Sharma) was there with him.”

“I would want to say one thing about Shashank. The way he is batting, how did you decide that he is your finisher only, that even though he is batting well, you won’t send him up the order? What is the point? Someone who is batting well and has the temperament is not a finisher only. He plays red-ball cricket and is an experienced player,” he said on his YouTube channel.

Stand-in skipper San Curran praised Shashank and Ashutosh for their performances and pointed out that it can be sometimes disheartening to lose such close matches in the IPL.

“Another close one, I think this team likes a close one, but unfortunately another loss. Another incredible knock from the young guy (on Ashutosh), but another close loss. It’s very tough, you want to lose close games rather than getting absolutely thumped, but we’ve lost a lot of wickets at the start, the way the younger guys have taken the team so close is heartening (on Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma).”

“They have incredible confidence, you see a guy like Ashutosh having the confidence to play the sweeps and the big hits against pacers, it’s so great to watch them in action. It’s disheartening to lose close games, but there are a lot of positives in this team. We still have the belief in us, we believe we can turn this around, the sun will come up tomorrow and we will hopefully get on a winning run,” Curran said.

As the selection for T20 World Cup 2024 nears, the form of Yashasvi Jaiswal, a regular for India in both white-ball and red-ball cricket, has become a big concern. Jaiswal, who was among the top-scoring batters in the IPL last season, has barely gotten runs this term. The left-handed opening batter was also being seen among the top contenders for the opening spot in the Indian team at the T20 World Cup but that might no longer be the case. Amid this situation, India captain Rohit Sharma has been advised to pick up the phone and give a pep-talk to Jaiswal.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra, in a video on his YouTube channel, admitted being worried about Jaiswal’s situation and wants Rohit or Kumar Sangakkara, Rajasthan’s director of cricket operations, to step in.

“I am getting slightly worried about Yashasvi because Yashasvi didn’t used to play like this. He is trying to murder every ball. You are a very good player, and you are good because you believe in timing. You are not a wrestler and you are not Andre Russell. Your playing style is very different,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“Since I like this kid a lot, I want Kumar Sangakkara to talk to him, or else Rohit Sharma should pick up the phone and talk to him and say – ‘You have to go to the T20 World Cup but this form is not required, play a little cautiously’. He hit a six and a four, and then tried another big shot and got out.”

Jaiswal has registered scores of 24, 5, 10, 0, 24, 39 in the IPL so far. In comparison, some of the other young batters in the league, like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, etc. have done wonders with the bat.

With Virat Kohli also being looked as an opening option, alongside Shubman Gill, continuity of Jaiswal’s poor form might result into him dropping out of the T20 World Cup race soon.

It has been a horrible start for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2024 with the Faf du Plessis-led side losing four out of their first five matches in the competition. Star batter Virat Kohli is currently the highest run-getter in IPL 2024 but lack of performances from other batters and an indisciplined bowling attack has resulted in heavy losses for the franchise. RCB’s latest defeat came against Rajasthan Royals where Kohli once again scored a century but Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson proved too powerful for the bowlers. Former India batter Aakash Chopra took to social media to dissect the key areas where RCB have gone wrong and how they have failed to address problems that have routinely bothered them.

Chopra wrote that the decision to let go of quality spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Wanindu Hasaranga has been a major issue for the side and added that the franchise needs to think beyond the preferred strategy of playing Kohli along with three overseas batters.

“You let go of Chahal to buy Hasranga. And then let go of him to invest in the uncapped Indian spinners. It’s a fairly long journey to understand that #RCB’s bowling is a perennial weak-link but the attempt to resolve it is yet to be seen. As for the batting…Kohli plus 3 overseas batters is a strategy that hasn’t worked for nearly two decades…most teams would’ve walked a different path but not the RCB.  #MidnightMusings,” Chopra posted on social media platform X (formerly called Twitter).

Kohli reckoned that the Jaipur track was two-paced making strokeplay difficult but former India ODI skipper Ajay Jadeja felt that the manner in which the star batter batted, there seemed to be very little demons present in the 22-yard strip.

Kohli scored an unbeaten 113 off 72 balls with 12 fours and four sixes but RCB managed only 183/3 in 20 overs, a total that was surpassed by Rajasthan Royals with five balls to spare, courtesy Jos Buttler’s 58-ball ton.

Jadeja, an astute cricket brain, felt that there seemed to be some discrepancy in what Kohli observed and how in general the pitch behaved during the entire duration of the game.

“He (Kohli) started out so well. He hit a couple of boundaries in the first few overs, and you knew you were watching something special tonight. The only surprising thing was him speaking about how the deliveries were not carrying through on this pitch, but the way he batted, we didn’t see any shortcomings in the pitch,” Jadeja, a ‘Jio Cinema’ IPL expert said.

After scoring his eighth IPL hundred, Kohli had said the pitch was not a flat one “The wicket looks quite different from the outside. It feels like it’s flat, but the ball is holding up in the pitch, that’s when you realise the pace changes,” Kohli told the official broadcaster.

RCB lost to KKR in their IPL 2024 match© BCCI/Sportzpics

Former Indian cricket team batter Aakash Chopra took a cheeky dig at Royal Challengers Bangalore with an interesting anecdote involving Virat Kohli‘s knock against Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 2024 match on Friday. Kohli scored his second consecutive half-century of the competition but it was not enough as the RCB bowling attack faltered under pressure against the explosive batting of Sunil Narine and Venkatesh Iyer. Chopra pointed out that while Kohli took 59 deliveries to score 83, KKR were off to a stunning start in the powerplay and ended up scoring 83 runs in 5.5 overs.

“When Sunil Narine opens, the template is absolutely clear – ‘Either I or you will not remain’. He plays in that fashion, tries to hit sixes. Everyone knows that you need to repeatedly bowl bouncers and yorkers, but if you don’t get success in that, just like Bengaluru didn’t get in the first six overs, he takes the match far away from your grasp,” he said during his analysis on YouTube.

Phil Salt was also there with him. Phil Salt hit 18 runs in the first over itself. He was brilliant. Just to put things in context, the opposing team bowled well but Kohli played 59 balls to reach 83 and Kolkata had already scored 85 in 5.5 overs. Whether it was Alzarri Joseph, Mohammed Siraj or Yash Dayal, everyone was hit a lot,” the former India cricketer added.

Chopra was also all praise for KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir whom he credited for moves like sending Narine to open the batting and using Andre Russell as a death-over bowler.

“I feel Gautam has given them a lot of confidence. Sunil Narine opening has Gautam Gambhir’s imprint. Andre Russell bowling at the death also has a little imprint of Gautam Gambhir. He is empowering them slightly and the same can be said about Venkatesh Iyer. He has been empowered to hit fours and sixes,” Chopra explained.
