On Friday, the match between India and England was cancelled due to some newly found Covid cases in the Indian side. The venue for the final test match was at the Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. India currently stands at top with the lead, the score for the series is 2-1. The boards of both the teams are currently in talks to reschedule it in 2022.
The Indian side detected COVID-19 cases in the camp. India suffered a setback during the fourth Test when three members of their support staff including head coach Ravi Shastri had tested positive for Covid. Apart from Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar had contracted the virus.
The ECB, in a statement, had said that the Manchester Test had to be cancelled after India were “unable to field a team” due to fears of a further increase in the number of Covid cases inside the camp. ECB tweeted :
“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp. India are regrettably unable to field a team,” the statement further read.
The BCCI has offered to reschedule the cancelled Test match. It is likely to see both boards work towards “finding a window to reschedule this Test match”. Said the BCCI in a statement.
“The BCCI and ECB held several rounds of discussion to find a way to play the Test Match. However, outbreak of Covid-19 in the Indian team contingent forced the decision of calling off the Old Trafford Test Match,” the Indian board said.
Recently, a similar incident took place during a match between Brazil and Argentina. The match was World Cup qualifier.
