Chennai Super Kings qualify for another IPL final. Dhoni came in for batting with the game heading towards a very close encounter and getting the job done with 18* off only 6 balls. Rituraj Gaikwad was awarded player of the match for his well supporting and important 70 off 50.
Chasing a good looking total of 173 in 20 overs by the Delhi Capitals, Chennai faced some hurdles. Robin Uthappa and Gaikwad took over when an early wicket of Faf Du Plessis fell at an early 3.
Delhi went for the unfair end of the toss but after the kind of start that Shaw gave them. They lost a bit of momentum in the middle overs which at the end was a few runs short on the board as a target. Bowling wise, Avesh Khan had a poor outing and Rabada looked off rhythm, so he bowled only three.
First Innings –
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and opted to bowl at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium for the first Qualifier. Delhi Capitals opened the innings with Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan. The team managed to put 80-4 in 10 overs, with a steady innings from Shaw of 60 from 34.
Captain Rishabh Pant and Hetmyer stitched a partnership of 83 runs at a difficult time for the team. Pant got to his half century at the very last ball of the innings making 51 off 35.
Hazlewood picked 2 from his 4 giving only 29, maintaining an acceptable economy of 7.20. Jadeja, Moeen Ali and DJ Bravo got one wicket each, leaving main striking bowlers Chahar and Thakur with none.
Second Innings –
Faf Du Plessis got bowled by his fellow countryman Nortje at 3, scoring only 1. Uthappa and Gaikwad held the crease and scored around hundred runs batting together. Shreyas Iyer’s magic on the field gave the match an interesting turn.
Shreyas Iyer’s electric presence on the field by taking a catch off Uthappa and then taking another off Thakur’s bat. Rayudu just came to bat when a call for double was made, the ball was in the Iyer’s patrolling area and he picked the ball on first drop with his right hand, Rabada on the non-striker’s-end received the throw in no time. Rayudu fell short to make it home in time.
The match got interesting with the fall of wickets falling, boundaries being hit, dot balls and the atmosphere in the stadium. MS Dhoni came to bat playing a cameo role of a finisher that he is, making 18* off 6. Dhoni got three 4s and one 6 in his scorecard, hitting the final runs for his team to qualify for the final.
The Delhi Capital bowler, Tom Curran performed amazingly to get 3 wickets for the night. Nortje and Avesh Khan got 1 each.
On 11th Royal Challenger Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders are to play eliminator next, competing to play Delhi Capitals next. Delhi will have to wait till the winner comes to battle them for the finals of IPL 2021. Chennai Super Kings and the qualifying team will play the IPL final on October 15th.
