CM Mamata Banerjee declared Thursday that her party, the Trinamool Congress, will back the nomination of senior leader Mukul Roy for the post of chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the Assembly.
Daring the BJP to conflict Roy’s nomination, the CM stated her party has the requisite numbers in the House and if the BJP members combat his candidature, they will defeated by vote.
Directing a press conference, Mamata stated, “Mukul Roy is a BJP MLA. I came to know that he had filed his nomination for PAC chairman with the help of an Independent MLA assisted by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. We will back him. We have the people’s approval and the numbers in the Assembly and if the BJP objects (to Roy’s candidature), they will have to encounter defeat.”
The BJP, meantime, moved an objection petition to the Speaker protesting his acceptance of the nomination papers of Roy, who now switched to the Trinamool after seven years with the BJP. Anyhow, Assembly sources stated the Speaker, Biman Banerjee, disregarded the objection. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Banerjee stated, “I am unaware of any such objection.”
For the 20-member PAC, the BJP has already managed six members while the ruling party has nominated 13.
