Karnataka’s newly created Vijayanagar district is on high alert. The casualty toll due to consumption of contaminated water in Makarabbi village in Huvinahadagali taluk of the state reached 6. Considering the emergency, the Karnataka authorities stationed two ambulances in the village to shift patients quickly to hospitals. In case anyone develops symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting.
The deceased are Lakshmamma, Basamma Havanooru, Neelappa Belavagi, Goneppa, Mahadevappa and Kenchamma, all from Makarabbi village. Over 200 individuals who feel sick after drinking contaminated water treated at Bellary, Hospet, Hubballi, Haveri and other hospitals.
Two individuals e demised on September 23 and another person, a 50-year woman surrendered on October 1.
Sources said Makarabbi village has a populace of over 2,000 people. During installation of new pipelines to borewells, old pipes damaged sewage water mixed up with drinking water.
Over 50 individuals whose health deteriorated, shifted to different hospitals in Hubballi, Davanagere, Haveri, Bellary and other places. Sources say that many are still in a critical state.
9 cases of vomiting and loose motion detailed first on Aug 26 and admitted to a nearby hospital. They responded to the treatment and improved. A group of officers visited the village and gathered three samples of water. Amidst, 2 samples resulted that the water is unfit for drinking purposes.
On September 23, cases of vomiting and loose motion detailed once again. The district administration opened an interim hospital at the village. Two ambulances stationed to shift the patients in case of emergency.
The action adapted to shut three bore wells and a well in the village. The water is provided by tankers and a RO plant established in the village.
