North East Trinamool Congress appointed Sushmita Dev to Rajya Sabha, former Congress leader, to Rajya Sabha for by-polls. By-Polls for six Rajya Sabha vacant seats across five states, which were vacant due to resignation or death of a sitting MP, will be held on October 4.
The TMC party tweeted that they are pleased to nominate @SushmitaDevAITC to the Upper House of the Parliament.
@MamataOfficial’s vision to empower women and assure their maximum participation in politics which shall help our society to achieve much more.
Dev was overwhelmed to hear this nomination announcement. She expressed her gratitude to Mamata di and Abhishek. Dev is excited to take the party’s vision forward.
Recently, Dev left Congress and joined TMC. She is prepared to undertake any responsibility given to her by the TMC and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
According to political analysts, Dev has been appointed to the RS. She had been campaigning in Assam and Tripura with the aim of expanding the party’s cadre and influence in the northeast.
TMC’s national ambition to defeat BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is another key factor. TMC is hopeful that Dev could soon represent the party nationally under Abhishek Banerjee. Also, TMC is more advocative about women’s representation in Parliament which is where Dev experience would come in handy.
According to sources, Dev was expecting such a valued post from her previous Congress party. Now that the TMC has nominated her for the RS by-polls, this will boost her position in the corridors of power.
