Union Minister of Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari revealed his conversation with Elon Musk. Gadkari said that he has asked Tesla not to sell cars manufactured in China in the Indian market. The demand kept forth by Nitin Gadkari is a response to the disturbance created by China at the LAC recently.
“I have asked Tesla not to sell cars India which the company has manufactured in China. I have told the company to manufacture electric cars in India, and also export cars from India.” Nitin Gadkari said at an event on Friday. He further said that Narendra Modi will extend all necessary support to Tesla to set up its manufacturing units in India. He also informed that negotiations are going on with the US based EV company regarding tax concessions.
Bringing their business to India would be beneficial to Tesla since India is world’s fifth largest auto market. Elon Musk previously demanded reduction on import duties in India which he deemed “highest in the world”. “We want to do so, but import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country,” he tweeted. The Heavy Industries Ministry of India told Tesla last month that tax concessions can be considered once production starts.
Why Tesla is important for India’s carbon emission reduction commitment?
Experts say that electronic vehicles create lower carbon footprints and help in reducing carbon emission over the years. Tesla is the world’s leading producer of EV’s and help India to fulfill its pledge of reduced carbon emission. India is world’s 3rd largest C02 emitter after China and USA.
India aims at reducing its carbon footprint by 33-35% from 2005 levels by the year 2030. The use of EV’s and hydrogen powered vehicles can help us in achieving our goals.
