CHANDIGARH: Congress leadership chose Charanjit Singh Channi as the new Punjab Chief Minister. On Monday he said that his government will work for the welfare of the people of Punjab.

Meanwhile in his first press conference after taking seat as CM, Channi said that “the party is supreme, not the chief minister’s post nor the cabinet.”
“The party is supreme, not the CM or the cabinet. The government will work as per the party’s ideology,” Punjab CM said.
Also, Channi is the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab. Also, he reached out to the farmers, who had been protesting against the government. Meanwhile a year gas passed since the three central farm laws. He announced that his government will waive the water and electricity bills of the farmers here.
OATH TOWARDS FARMERS
“We will pay off the bills for farmers…all pending bills will be paid off,” the Punjab CM told news officials. Congress leadership appointed Charanjit Singh Channi. This was after hectic deliberations to succeed Capt Amarinder Singh.
Channi created a history by becoming the first Dalit Chief Minister in the history of Punjab. Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered oath to Channi. They did this at a gathering held at the Raj Bhawan . Channi took oath in Punjabi. Also, Congress Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni were also sworn in as deputy chief ministers.
Meanwhile many top officials attendedthe swearing-in ceremony. This included Congress lead Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Meanwhile Congress appointed Channi as the CM of Punjab two days after Captain Amarinder Singh’s resignation.
Nonetheless Channi became chief minister with less than six months to go before the assembly polls in Punjab. People expect Channi’s appointment to help the party to play the Dalit card in the upcoming elections. An estimated 30 per cent of the state’s population, counting both Sikhs and Hindus, is from the community.
