Kashmir veteran rebel politician Syed Ali Shah Geelani died on Wednesday evening in Srinagar. Authorities deployed troops around the city and barred the internet and vehicular movements as a precautionary measure. He was 91 years old.
Geelani was the most senior extremist in Kashmir. Geelani had been ailing for years and had been under house arrest for the last 12 years after leading several anti-India dissents.
Geelani died of chest pain and chest congestion on Wednesday afternoon and died at night at his house in Srinagar.
Preceding year, Geelani quit his hard line Hurriyat Conference wing. He revealed that it had failed to counter New Delhi’s endeavor to dominate Kashmir.
Hurriyat Conference was developed in Kashmir in 1993.
Pak PM Imran Khan condoled over Geelani’s passing on Twitter and mentioned the nation would commemorate a day of mourning.
