New Delhi: More than 18 individuals assassinated and a few others harmed in lightning strike incidents across India. As monsoon wreaks damage in the country, several states including West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand, reported events of lightning strike on Saturday (August 7, 2021).
At least four individuals were murdered and seven others harmed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in two regions of West Bengal, as the flood situation in the southern parts of the state worsened after a fresh spell of rain on Saturday.
Two individuals in their mid-twenties died in Purba Medinipur district’s Nandigram, while two others, including a woman, died in Purba Bardhaman district when lightning hit them, a senior official said. Seven people were harmed in lightning strikes in Purba Bardhaman district, he said, adding that all the people were working in farming fields.
Seven people have died in a lightning strike in Bihar`s Banka district on Saturday, state Health Minister Mangal Pandey revealed. Lightning activities have shown an uptrend all over India in the past two decades, said Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh on Friday.
“The news of the death of 7 people due to lightning in Banka district is very sorrowful. The Bihar government is with the victim`s kin in this hour of disaster. My deepest sympathies to the dead and injured in this incident. I plead to God to give peace to the dead and speedy improvement to the injured,” Pandey tweeted after the tragedy.
At least five individuals , counting three women, deceased and five others were harmed when lightning hit them in three districts of Odisha on Saturday, police said.
The event occurred when all of them were involved in farming work in Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak and Balasore districts, they said. The injured are undergoing treatment in hospital.
