A part of a tunnel going up at Khooni Nallah on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban province collapsed on Thursday night. Injuring four people and trapping several others, officials said. The subsided portion is about 30 to 40 metres inside the tunnel.
A joint rescue operation established immediately by police and the Army after a small part of the front side of the tunnel collapsed. The fragmented shooting stones, however, hampered the rescue operation.
Three workers rescued and at least 10 individuals suspected still trapped under the debris, according to officials.
Ramban Deputy Commissioner Massaratul Islam and Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma were at the venue supervising the rescue operation.
Officials said that several machines and vehicles parked on the front side of the tunnel suffered damage.
Those trapped inside the tunnel belonged to the Sarla Company involved in the erection of the tunnel. The mislaids have been identified as Jadav Roy, 23, Gautam Roy, 22, Sudhir Roy, 31, Dipak Roy, 33, Parimal Roy, 38, Shiva Chowhan, 26, Nawaraj Chowdhury, 26, Khushi Ram, 25, Mujaffar, 38, and Israt, 30.
Union minister Jitendra Singh said that the rescue operations are continuing in full swing. And the civil administration and police management are regulating the situation.
