Authorities said on Sunday that the Ganges had advanced about 300 meters, eroding the banks of the Marda area in West Bengal, engulfing houses, fields and mango orchards. They said that Balutola in the Manikchak block was the area most affected by erosion, which occurred within 1 kilometer.
locals said that so far this year, more than 400 families have been displaced because the river swallowed more than half of the villages in Balutola and Elahitola. They said dozens of villagers fled from these areas every day.
Joy Ahmed, the development officer of the block, said she has visited the affected area. “Gram panchayat was assigned a tarp. The whole situation is being monitored,” he said.
The state’s Irrigation Minister, Sabina Yasmin, also recently visited the area. The delegation from the left front also went to the area to talk with the locals.
