Pune (Maharashtra) [India], September 22 : A man has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering his 19-year-old sister-in-law in Maharashtra’s Pune on Tuesday, police said.The Police Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad, Krishna Prakash informed, “The main accused has been arrested while a search is underway for the second accused”.
Tukaram the accused resides in Thomas colony. He had offered his spare room to his newlywed cousin and his wife. Prakash said that the man took the victim out . This was under the pretext of showing her an ancient temple. However, he along with one of his friends demanded physical favours from the 19-year-old girl.”When the girl resisted, the main accused’s friend raped her. Later as the girl further agitated, the main accused strangled her with her own scarf. Following this he destroyed her face to destroy the evidence,” added the Police Commissioner.

As of 2019, Nagaland (0.8), Tamil Nadu(1.0), and Bihar(1.3) had the lowest rape rates among the states of India, while Rajasthan (15.9) had the highest rape rate. These statistics do not take into account rapes ending in murder and attempts to rape.
