On 31st of August, Tuesday, the Pakistani Interior Minister-Sheikh Rashid Ahmad turned down the rumors that spread across the country. The pictures of US troops landing at Islamabad Airport gave rise to speculations about the period of their presence on Pakistani territory. People were of the opinion that the American Armed Forces will stay in Pakistan for a very long period, but Sheikh Rashid Ahmad’s response suggested otherwise.
Transit visas ranging from 21-30 days issued to the troops will ensure their limited stay. Their asylum in Pakistan is for a limited period of time, said Sheikh Rashid Ahmad. Approximately 4000 evacuees are in Pakistan, out of which, 1627 came by air and 2192 entered Pakistan from Torkham border. The rest came through the Chaman border.
Sheikh Rashid Ahmad added to his statement that Pakistan has played a historic role in Afghanistan peace process.
