The shooting is the latest outbreak of gun violence in Oregon’s largest city this year. So far this year, there have been approximately 570 shootings in Portland, more than double the number recorded in the same period in 2020. According to the newspaper, two people were shot in the same area last month and 28 cartridges were found.
Police estimated that about half of the shootings were gang-related, and Mayor Ted Wheeler warned in May that gangs required perpetrators to shoot within 30 days or they would be shot and killed. He claimed that people from other states also traveled to the city to participate in violent activities. It is unclear what sparked the shooting on Saturday. Police said there was no threat to the public.
