Taiwan is concerned that China might launch a “full scale” invasion on them by the year 2025. Taiwan’s defence minister Chiu Kuo-Cheng said in the parliament that military tensions with China are at their worst in more than 40 years. He also pointed out the fact that China already posses the required arsenal to take them over by force. Moreover, the cost of full scale invasion might be the lowest for Beijing in 2025. That is when the potential invasion might take place.
“By 2025, China will bring the cost and attrition to its lowest. It has the capacity now, but will not start war easily, having to take many other things under consideration,” Chiu Kuo-Cheng said. Over a four day period beginning last Friday, Taiwan has reported almost 150 Chinese air force planes entering its airspace.
The United States has criticized China for its actions. US is also the biggest supplier of military equipment’s to Taiwan. The US has also confirmed its “rock solid” commitment to the latter. China, on the other hand, blames Washington for the rising tension in the Taiwan Strait. The former criticizes US’s policies of supporting Taiwan with arm sales.
Tension between the two countries:
Taiwan is an island country located to the south-east of China. It shares maritime borders with the Republic of China. Taiwan has been governed independently since 1949 but Beijing still views it as a part of the Chinese territory. The latter has also vowed to unify the former with mainland China using military force if necessary.
The conflict/tension between the two countries raised when Tsai Ing-wen was elected president of Taiwan in 2016. Tsai refused to adopt his predecessors strategy to endorse cross-strait ties, which angered the Chinese. Beijing has since then taken aggressive actions like flying fighter jets too close to the airspace of the island country. China even invaded the airspace of Taiwan quite a few times.
