North Korea claimed that they had successfully tested a new long-range cruise missile last weekend. Government officials called it a strategic weapon of great significance. As per the latest updates, the country may have fired a ballistic missile today. “North Korea fired an unidentified projectile from its east coast” said South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. Japan’s Coast Guard backed this claim and said that an object that could be a ballistic missile was fired from North Korea.
Just a few days after the country claimed to have tested a long-range missile, the country fired a possible ICBM.
United States had offered to provide humanitarian aid to the country in exchange of its denuclearization. However, their recent tests and launches suggest that North Korea has been steadily developing heavy weaponry despite the United Sates’ condition.
North Korea’s obsession with nuclear weapons:
Kim Jong Un, the Supreme leader of the nation is often seen or heard boasting about the nuclear weapons that the country possess. It became a nuclear power in October 2009 when the country conducted its first underground nuclear test.
Despite the weak economical conditions and recurring famines, the leaders of the country have given more significance to weapon programmes. Currently, the Republic is sitting over an arsenal of approximately 40 weapons.
Bad blood with the US:
The conflict between North Korea and US dates back to the 50’s when the Korean war was happening. The United States came to the aid of South Korea when North Korea successfully annexed a major chunk of South Korea.
All three generations of Supreme Leaders of the nation have publicly despised western ideologies. They even banned Hollywood movies and western clothing from their country to ensure that the citizens do the same.
