The coming hurricane is forecasted to landfall today late morning on Long Island.
The active hurricane comes under category 1 that is threatening to cause destruction to Long Island, New York and New England. Henri originated from 200 miles north-northeast of Bermuda with a well defined low-pressure system. Cities have started to evacuate procedures and move towards safety locations. Rail service in parts of New York and Connecticut has been suspended on Sunday, flights are also expected to get canceled in the region. Last hurricane that hit northeastern region was 30 years back and was called Hurricane Bob (1991) a Category 2 type, it took a similar track and hit New England.
President Joe Biden called a meeting with the governors of the six respective northeastern states on Saturday, “On the call, the President made clear that states have the full support of the Federal government to aid local emergency response efforts,” the White House said.
In another statement the White House said “widespread power outages, coastal storm surge, and inland flooding,”. Recently New York City saw a similar case of flooding because of a heavy thunderstorm.
“This is the most serious hurricane risk in New England in 30 years, since Hurricane Bob in 1991,” AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jon Porter said.
“I have declared a State of Emergency in advance of #HurricaneHenri. 500 National Guard Troops have been called up & state assets have been prepositioned for storm response efforts. NYers in affected areas: Prepare for heavy rain, strong winds and power outages.” tweeted Andrew Cuomo, New York City governor. Cuomo is supposed to the leave the office on August 24th due to sexual harassment allegations.
Gov. Dan McKee of Rhode Island signed an emergency declaration on Friday. Henri will reach the coastlines of Rhode Island by Sunday evening, which can be in the form of a tropical storm or Category 1 hurricane that Henri is.
The forecast says that the intensity of the hurricane with about 85 mph maximum sustained winds by Saturday night. The winds will weaken as the hurricane landfalls, but the tropical storm will surely bring in heavy rain and flooding in some regions.
