The Food and Drug Administration warns against using Drug Ivermectin for the treatment of Covid-19. Quoting “You are not a horse. You are not a cow.” said Bloomberg on Saturday.
US had been using this drug to treat Covid-19 whereas it is mainly used to prevent parasites in animals.
Mississippi faced the consequences of using it and it had the highest surge of Covid-19 across the United States. Mississippi State Health Officer “Dr. Thomas Dobbs,” said during a press briefing Wednesday, “I think some people are trying to use it as a [COVID-19] preventative, which I think is really kind of crazy, so please don’t do that”. In vitro studies suggest that Ivermectin acts by inhibiting the host’s importin alpha/beta-1 nuclear transport proteins, which are part of a key intracellular transport process that viruses hijack to enhance infection by suppressing the host’s antiviral response. Ivermectin tablets are approved by FDA to treat people who are suffering from intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis but taking large doses of this drug is dangerous and can cause serious harm.
FDA says Ivermectin is not an anti-viral. Animal drugs are often highly concentrated. So if you overdose on ivermectin it can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension, allergy, dizziness, ataxia (problems with balance), seizures, and even death.
In March, the World Health Organization advised ivermectin should only be used in clinical trials, saying evidence on its use to treat COVID-19 is “inconclusive.”Several clinical trials that are evaluating the use of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19 are currently underway or in development.
