Cuba became the first country in the world to vaccinate children from the age of two on Monday. The country used home-grown jabs to inoculate their children before opening schools nation-wide. World Health Organization has not recognized these home-grown jabs yet.
Much like India, schools in Cuba have been closed since March 2020. The country focuses on vaccinating every child in the age group of 2-11 with these home-grown doses before the schools reopen in October and November as per the government’s guidelines.
UNICEF has suggested countries world-wide to open schools as soon as possible. They said that, “the long term cost of closure are too high and hard to justify,”. Countries like China and UAE have announced that they are planning to vaccinate younger children, but Cuba became the first to implement the plan.
Cuba has seen a rapid upsurge in the number of COVID cases recently. The government’s decision to speed up the vaccination drives and introduce a home-grown jab for kids might be a product of the same.
