Greece completed its 40km fence on its border with Turkey to dissuade migrants. Greece did not want the migration flow from Afghanistan to Europe following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
They are under the fear of the refugee crisis just like back in 2015 when millions of people scrammed the war in the middle east and crossed to Greece from Turkey before traveling North. They are on high alert to make sure it does not become Europe’s gateway again.
The Afghanistan crisis has created “possibilities for migrant flows” Citizens Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis said after visiting the region of Evros on Friday with the defense minister and the head of the armed forces. He also told reporters “Our borders will remain infringed.” The border is totally under a high surveillance monitoring system.
Greece and Turkey, NATO allies and historic rivals, have long been at the odds over migrant issues against territorial claims in the eastern Mediterranean. In recent months Greece has already compressed its migration policy by fencing off its migrant camps close to Turkey. Further discussions on the Situation will be done over call between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
