Ex-England Star’s “Virat Kohli” Reference While Advising BCCI Selector For T20 World Cup Squad

Posted on April 7, 2024 By admin

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has shared a piece of advice for BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar regarding the Indian cricket team squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. There has been a lot of debate over the selection of players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul for the T20 mega event set to be played in USA and West Indies in June this year. Vaughan advised Agarkar to be brave with his decisions and drop the likes of Kohli or Rahul if the chief selector thinks that they should not be included in the team. “What I’ll say to Ajit Agarkar (is) don’t be scared of being brave. If he ultimately believes that the Indian T20 team is better off without a Virat Kohli or a KL Rahul, that’s how he should deliver the team,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz as quoted by Times Now.

India last won a major ICC tournament back in 2013. Since then the side has failed to win any major ICC final despite the presence of star players in the team. Vaughan feels that new set of players might help India’s cause in the upcoming tournament.

“Don’t be under pressure that you have to pick all the big names, because you know they haven’t been winning trophies. And it might be that a fresher set of minds with no baggage of losing in November (2023 World Cup), no baggage of not doing great in the last T20 World Cup… maybe they need a fresh set of minds. He’s probably got 30 names, that he can put in the bag, he’d pull out the bowlers, batters, spinners, and whoever he pulls out, they’re going to be competitive,” said the former England captain.

The International Cricket Council in Jaunary this year announced the schedule for the T20 World Cup 2024.

The event will kick off on June 1 with a match between United States and Canada in Texas. Meanwhile, the high-octane encounter between India and Pakistan will be played in New York on June 9.

A total of 20 teams will be participating in the tournament with four groups of five-team each. The semi-finals of the tournament will be played on June 25 and 27 while the summit clash will be played on June 29.
