Actor Priyanka Chopra says that viewers should embrace streaming platforms because they have not only given the audience to consume distinct stories but also equalize the film industry.
Priyanka, who made her digital introduction with the Netflix movie The White Tiger this year, said that streaming services have made artists think outside the “composition” of a Bollywood movie.
“That’s what you’re watching in Indian cinema – the freedom of streaming services is allowing audiences to have larger thoughts than the equation that persisted before. That there should be five songs, a fight course. That recipe has faded. Now people want to tell great, true stories, with which they identify,” the actor told reporters.
Chopra Jonas was speaking at a virtual press conference of streaming platform ZEE5’s inaugurated in the US, late Tuesday evening. The initial assertion was made by Archana Anand, Chief Business Officer, ZEE5 Global.
The 38-year-aged actor stated the boom of the streaming services, particularly in India, has dilapidated the monopoly of a “specific number of persons”, resulting in newer storytelling.
“It’s astounding because it gives new writers, actors, filmmakers a break to come into an industry that was monopolized for ages by a very specific number of people. It’s a big time for evolution, entertainment and specifically for Indian cinema,” she added.
While nothing can be juxtaposed with a theatrical experience, the actor said the OTT platforms have brought in an awe-inspiring comfort to the audience.
Anyhow, Chopra strongly trusts that the current OTT explosion is not an indicator that the “theatrical is going anywhere”.
“The liberty that streaming has rendered to the audiences worldwide is that you can view a movie at the comfort of your homes. That’s awesome. It’s spreading culture, teaching individuals, upskilling them, there’s a huge, new audience that is being manifested to all kinds of Indian cinema,” she added.
The Indian film profession is going through an “exciting time” and personalities should earnestly “embrace streaming as much as we can”, Chopra Jonas mentioned. “It’s not the future, it’s the present,” she added.
At the occasion, Priyanka also stated that as an Indian actor-producer performing in Hollywood, she desires to use her power to develop more space for South Asian artistes on the international platform.
“I have been one of the very few people who have had the chance of being able to be in the entertainment world in two of the largest entertainment industries in the universe.
“My expedition is to be able to develop more gratitude, representation and to be able to have South Asians feel seen and heard, especially within the global community outside of South Asia,” the actor added.
As part of the inauguration, ZEE5 exposed its line-up of Originals and other films across languages to publish on the platform in the future months, which included filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s much awaited RRR post its theatrical release.
