Gujarat Titans’ (GT) ace spinner Rashid Khan opened up on Wednesday about undergoing back surgery following the ICC Cricket World Cup last year and the hardships he faced due to playing the tournament at low fitness levels. Following the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India, in which Afghanistan finished sixth, Rashid took some time off from the game to undergo back surgery and returned to the game during a T20I series against Ireland in March this year. Now, he is representing Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has taken eight wickets and scored 102 runs for his side at an average of 20.40 so far.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo’s The Cricket Monthly, Rashid said that before the World Cup, the doctor had told him to go for surgery, but he delayed it to represent his country in the tournament. He decided to take a couple of injections before the tournament.

“Even before the World Cup, the doctor had told me I had to go for surgery, but I deferred the decision since I wanted to play that tournament. He warned me the back issue could become bigger in case I played, especially considering it was 50 overs, where my workload would be significantly large because I would play a minimum of nine ODIs. He feared I would need a major surgery. But I told him I had to play in the World Cup. I cannot say no to the World Cup. So we decided I would take a couple of injections before the tournament,” said Rashid.

Rashid said that following their big win over Pakistan, he celebrated and danced a lot all night and did not behave as if he had a back issue.

“Our physio kept reminding me I needed to be careful. The entire Afghanistan squad was surprised to see me dancing and celebrating; they had never seen me in that kind of mood. That happiness was different because that jashn was in the whole country [Afghanistan],” he added.

However, when he woke up the next day, he was in complete pain and played the rest of the tournament on painkillers and low fitness. “I told the physio I couldn’t walk properly. He just gave me such a hard stare. I used painkillers to keep going, but in the final three matches of the World Cup, I was literally playing at 40 per cent fitness,” he said.

Rashid said that his back issues were affecting him a lot while bending and the pain was going down to his shins.

“I could not sleep. I would sleep only at four or five in the morning at times. The only way I could sleep was by taking sleeping tablets and painkillers,” he said.

He said that during the final three games of his side during the World Cup, his hamstrings were sore, forcing him to slide rather than walk.

“I could not lift my feet properly. I started having all my meals in my room. By the last match, the coach said to me I did not need to play, but I said I would manage with painkillers. Because when I was warmed up, I was not feeling the discomfort. I could run, dive and all that. But after the game, for like an hour, I could not move,” he added.

Rashid said that after the tournament, he decided to go for surgery. “The doctor said to me, “This is your first MRI and this is your second MRI, after the World Cup, so you see how much bigger the disc bulge has become.” I was nervous, to be honest. It was my first ever surgery in my career,” he added.

The spinner revealed that his doctor revealed to him that a failed surgery could mark the end of his playing career, which left him tensed.

“I had to sign that undertaking. I was so tense the whole night before the surgery. I didn’t tell my family that I was having surgery,” he added.

Rashid said that during the surgery, the entire GT staff, including head coach Ashish Nehra, director of cricket Vikram Solanki and assistant coach Naeem Amin, supported him a lot. He also revealed that he was pain-free following the surgery, but wanted to return to the game quickly.

“Ashish bhai, who had gone through lots of surgeries, spoke to me a lot and told me not to worry. When I came out of the surgery, I felt no pain. I felt so relieved. The rehab part, though, was the toughest. I badly wanted to return to playing and was missing it. In fact, I was part of the Afghanistan squad for the T20 series in India in January this year because I wanted to have the feeling of being on the ground,” he added.

Rashid revealed that during the last T20I against India, which involved two super overs, he instinctively became ready to bat despite the fact he was not in the eleventh.

“Finally, when I started to play again, it was one of the best feelings to be back on the field. I thank Naeem a lot because he helped me a lot during my rehab when I was in the UK for nearly two months. He would come early every single day at 5-6 am and stay late and help with my recovery,” he added.

Rashid opened up that the surgery has affected his bowling too, like while bowling his wrong’un because he would need to use his back more and it would scare him if there was any bit of stiffness in his back.

“That feeling lasted through the series against Ireland, which Afghanistan played before the IPL, and then, like I said, the first few matches here (the IPL),” he added.

The spinner spoke to the franchise’s video analyst, Sandeep Raju, about his problem and Raju revealed to him that he was not hitting his lengths right like before.

“He also pointed out that my wrong’un was finishing on the leg stump instead of the middle. That is when I told him I was not getting the feeling, because I am not using my whole body. I am just using the fingers. There is nothing wrong with my back, but I only had this fear in my mind: what if the injury resurfaced?.”

“Then, two days before the IPL match in Lucknow, I told him [Raju] I would do spot bowling, which I did for about an hour. I might have bowled 14-15 overs in that session without any strain on my back. I bowled again the next day, on the eve of the match. That’s when I felt everything was okay,” he concluded.

Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s Test career is just 17 games old but the great Brian Lara feels if there is anyone who can get close to his lofty feats, including the record 400 not out, it is the 22-year-old southpaw from India. Lara’s high praise for Jaiswal doesn’t come out of the blue. The left two-handers share a special bond, having spent a lot of time over the past year following their “4 am conversation” during the IPL when the West Indian was coaching Sunrisers Hyderabad and the young opener was in the Rajasthan Royals’ camp.

A lot has changed since IPL 2023 with Jaiswal now becoming an integral part of India’s Test and T20 team. His exploits in the longest format stand out as he averages close to 70 with three hundreds including two double tons in the recent home series against England. What has impressed Lara is Jaiswal’s ability to change gears as per the situation of the game.

“If I feel my records are threatened, Jaiswal has got a very good chance to do so. He has got capabilities, couple of double hundreds already. He is that good,” Lara told PTI editors at its headquarters in an interaction arranged by Star Sports where he is a commentator and expert for the ongoing IPL.

Lara, who recently turned 55, is one of the all-time greats of the game having amassed close to 12, 000 runs in Tests and over 10,000 runs in ODIs. His record of the highest individual total, 400 not out against England in 2004, still stands tall.

Lara fondly looked back at his first meeting with Jaiswal when asked about a light moment they shared on the sidelines of the Rajasthan Royals and SRH clash in the ongoing season.

“The only thing I can reveal about that (conversation) is I think he is an outstanding young cricketer. what I like about him is that he is very humble and willing to work. The first time I met him (last year), I immediately found myself attached to him.

“After the game (SRH vs Royals), I went to the hotel with a friend of mine from the Caribbean who knew Jos Buttler. It was midnight and Jaiswal found me. I promise you I left the hotel at 4 in the morning.

“He just wanted to hear more and more and more. That is one of his amazing traits. His ability to want to learn as much as possible. Our conversations are about trying to make him a better cricketer. I am available for anyone that has my number. I am happy to talk cricket.” Being a left-hander himself, it is natural for Lara to be biased towards that tribe. Another southpaw he has great admiration for is Abhishek Sharma with whom he spent time at SRH.

“Again he is someone who I met while I was batting coach of SRH. I spent two years there. I am allowed to a bit biased when I see a left-hander, I just love a left-hander. Myself and Abhishek have developed a very good relationship, these youngsters are very humble. they want to learn.

“What I like about these two, they want to get to great heights. I have great admiration for both.” The legend from Trinidad reckons that usually records are threatened by batters who score quickly and Jaiswal has that ability along with the hunger to bat long.

His 400 not out has not been surpassed in 20 years and Lara hopes he is still around to see the day when his record is broken.

“I think now, the pace that these guys are batting at. And you look at the guys over the years who have challenged that 300-mark and plus. It’s Chris Gayle. It’s Virender Sehwag. It’s Sanath Jayasuriya, It’s Inzamam-ul-Haq. It’s Matthew Hayden. These are guys who destroy bowling attacks.

“…you would not say that for a Rahul Dravid or Steve Smith in the present case. But a player who likes to score quickly, will have an opportunity. You know, Jaiswal, I mean, I was in Australia when David Warner came close and you know, he’s an aggressive player.

“So I believe yes, I think it will be broken at some point in time. I think it has to be that person’s destiny. Everything has to fall into place. And… I look forward to that time. I hope it happens, while I’m still around,” he said.

“Surprised How Quickly They Decided”: Ex-India Star Puts Onus On Umpires For Sanju Samson’s Dismissal https://artifex.news/took-a-decision-in-hurry-ex-india-stars-verdict-on-sanju-samsons-dismissal-row-5615586/ Wed, 08 May 2024 15:37:40 +0000 https://artifex.news/took-a-decision-in-hurry-ex-india-stars-verdict-on-sanju-samsons-dismissal-row-5615586/ Read More ““Surprised How Quickly They Decided”: Ex-India Star Puts Onus On Umpires For Sanju Samson’s Dismissal” »

The IPL 2024 match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals grabbed a lot of limelight, due to the controversial dismissal of Sanju Samson. Chasing 222, RR put up a great fight with skipper Samson leading from the front. However, he was caught on 86 by Shai Hope after he tried to smash a shot towards the long-on of Mukesh Kumar‘s delivery. The catch has led to a massive controversy with fans and experts split over whether Hope was able to complete the catch without touching the boundary rope.

The decision went to the third umpire, who then declared Samson out. Many experts and former cricketers gave their take regarding the catch and former India batter Wasim Jaffer also stated that the third umpire should have taken more time before giving the decision.

“With the replays that we saw, I felt he was out. The foot didn’t touch the rope. There wasn’t conclusive evidence. There was an international umpire there. Shai Hope also said that, although obviously, the fielder will say that only. But overall, with how it looked, I felt that was out,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

“They should’ve taken more time. I’m surprised at how quickly they decided. It was a very important moment in the match. RR’s win depended on that. You could’ve looked at it with 2-3 more angles or a super slow-mo, too. I felt they took a decision in a hurry,” he added.

Apart from Jaffer, former England batter Paul Collingwood also gave a similar opinion and stated that the third umpire should have checked different angles.

“Goughy (Michael Gough) is a very good friend of mine. So I am going to defend him (chuckles). Maybe he could have given himself another angle, just to double-check. Because it was so, so close. Those decisions and those moments make a huge difference. So maybe he could have given himself a little bit more time,” Collingwood told Star Sports.

“I know in the IPL, the organisers want to quicken things up, the umpires are being told that they have got to quicken the decisions. I think, on this occasion, a couple of more angles, just to clarify could have put everybody at ease. That might have been the best way to go,” he added.

Have Hit Energy-Saving Mode: Nikhat Zareen On Preparations For Olympic Debut https://artifex.news/have-hit-energy-saving-mode-nikhat-zareen-on-preparations-for-olympic-debut-5617731/ Wed, 08 May 2024 15:35:41 +0000 https://artifex.news/have-hit-energy-saving-mode-nikhat-zareen-on-preparations-for-olympic-debut-5617731/ Read More “Have Hit Energy-Saving Mode: Nikhat Zareen On Preparations For Olympic Debut” »

A long-cherished Olympic debut just about three months away, two-time world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen has hit “energy-saving mode” ahead of her date with destiny. So, she is off social media, is embracing solitude, devouring sweets on her cheat days, and binge-watching Netflix magnum opus ‘Heeramandi’. Zareen, who is a medal favourite in the 50kg category, believes activities that might sound like leisure to many, are actually legitimate ways to ensure that she has a calm frame of mind ahead of the Games beginning in Paris on July 26.

“Honestly, the feeling that I am going to be an Olympian soon hasn’t sunk in yet. As days are passing, the nervousness is increasing. But I always train my brain to focus on a good performance,” she told PTI in an interview from Patiala.

The 27-year-old from Hyderabad is a former junior world champion. She won consecutive senior world titles in 2022 and 2023.

Her 2022 season was nothing short of sensational as she remained undefeated and she would be hoping to hit similar peak in Paris.

“Every competition brings with it a degree of nervousness. You have expectations from yourself and the people around you also have expectations. It all adds up to the overall weight you feel on your mind.

“You cope with it by working hard, keeping your focus and having a calm mind, basically not allow yourself to be distracted. So, I am off social media, and I also try to keep my distance from people in general,” she revealed.

“Basically, I have hit energy saving mode, indulge my sweet tooth on cheat days, do grocery shopping, listen to music, it helps me stay calm. Also, I watch movies or Netflix shows. I am watching ‘Heeramandi’ right now, it’s quite interesting,” she said.

A believer in destiny, Zareen said she could have been an Olympian in Tokyo itself. She had lost a bitter selection trial to six-time world champion M C Mary Kom, who went on to qualify for the Games.

“Everyone knowns how badly I wanted to go to Tokyo. But it wasn’t destined. The setback made me resolute. The day I qualified for Paris, I was so happy that it is difficult for me to describe. It was like one major dream coming true,” she said.

“But then it hit me that it’s just half the job done.” Olympic preparations are not always about merely training, as nutrition, and psychological readiness play a role too. The mental part of it becomes all the more significant in her sport, which is often described as lonely.

“But you have to fight your battles, you can sometime share your thoughts with with your support staff or team but end of the day, it’s you who has to fight inside the ring, you are alone there,” she said.

“You have to condition your mind to believe that ‘acche din aayenge’ (good days will come). That this is my journey and I have to endure,” she explained.

What helps is the fact that women’s boxing is fetching material incentives now, something which wasn’t the case when she started.

“Once Mary didi won that Olympic medal in 2012 (a bronze), people took women’s boxing seriously. I was among those who felt inspired. Boxing is not a sport that you can play for too long. Injury can happen anytime.

“But the fact that you are being rewarded so much for international performances, it’s making people push themselves to succeed. It’s good for the future,” she said.

Talking of future, the sport’s Olympic status continues to hang in balance due to the International Olympic Committee’s refusal to recognise the International Boxing Association over governance issues and alleged corruption.

Zareen said she is hopeful of a solution.

“These things are not in our hands. Obviously it feels bad but I hope things will improve and IOC and IBA will find a solution. I believe boxing will stay in the Olympics,” she asserted.

Seven months after they made their international debut at the Asian Games, Mongolia capped an ignominious milestone when they were bowled out for 12, the second lowest score in T20 International history in a match against hosts Japan in Sano (Japan) on Wednesday. In response to Japan’s imposing 217 for 7 after the hosts elected to bat, Mongolia were folded in 8.2 overs, etching their name in the annals of infamy with the second lowest score in T20I history after Isle of Man’s 10 all out against Spain in on February 26, 2023.

For Japan, 17-year-old left-arm seamer Kazuma Kato-Stafford returned with 5 for 7 from his 3.2 overs, while Abdul Samad (2/4) and Makoto Taniyama (2/0) bagged two each in the match held at the Sano International Cricket Ground.

Tur Sumaya (4 off 11) was the top-scorer for Mongolia, while opener Namsrai Bat-yalalt faced a maximum 12 deliveries. This was the second T20I of a seven-match series, while the third one, slated later in the day, did not yield any result.

In the first T20I, Mongolia were bowled out for 33 in reply to Japan’s 199 for 5, enduring a 166-run defeat.

This was Mongolia’s fifth T20I appearance, having made international debut at the Hangzhou showpiece where they made a group stage exit after losing both their matches.

Nepal had amassed 314/3 against Mongolia on their international debut, a match they had lost by 273 runs after getting out for 41.

Mongolia had also lost to Maldives by nine wickets in the second match after posting 60 for 9.

According to the ICC, one Battulga Gombo was the ‘man behind cricket’ in the country.

“In 2014 he convinced the municipal park authorities to grant rights to develop an area of wasteland into a cricket ground, and in 2015, with his friend Chris Hurd, he launched the Mongolian Cricket Seed Appeal,” according to the ICC.

Since then the schools’ programme has grown, six provinces outside Ulaanbaatar are now playing the game, and indoor and outdoor tournaments are consistently being held throughout the year, it added.

Brief Scores: Japan 217 for 7 in 20 overs (Sabaorish Ravichandran 69; Zoljavkhlan Shurentsetseg 3/32, Luvsanzundui Erdenebulgan 2/61) beat Mongolia 12 all out in 8.2 overs (Kazuma Kato-Stafford 5/7, Abdul Samad 2/4, Makoto Taniyama 2/0) by 205 runs.

Shai Hope completes the catch of Sanju Samson during IPL 2024© X (formerly Twitter)

There has been a major controversy surrounding Shai Hope‘s catch to dismiss Sanju Samson during the IPL 2024 match on Tuesday. Hope was dangerously close to the boundary line when he completed the catch at long-in and the third umpire ruled in DC’s favour. However, the decision left Samson upset who ended up having an argument with the on-field umpires. Replays showed that there was a chance that Hope could have touched the boundary line while taking the catch and the whole incident split opinions among fans and experts. Official broadcasters Jio Cinema provided a zoomed in picture of the catch and it has provided a new angle to the conversation as it shows that Hope did not touch the boundary line.

DC kept their IPL 2024 playoff dreams alive with a crucial victory over RR.

Samson was fined 30 per cent for “breaching the IPL Code of Conduct” following his argument with the umpires. “Sanju Samson, captain, of Rajasthan Royals has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024,” an IPL statement said.

“Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement further read.

RR Director Of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara also opened up about the topic.

“Irrespective of that dismissal, we still should have probably seen that game home,” Sangakkara said at the post-match press conference.

“Losses happen. We had a great run at the start of the season. We bowled brilliantly in this game, especially Ashwin but once you make too many casual mistakes, it becomes very hard. At the end of the day it’s about execution,” he told reporters.

Delhi Capitals (DC) and Australian opener David Warner on Monday opened up on his unceremonious exit from his former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, calling his departure from SRH as “bizarre”. Warner was speaking on Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin‘s YouTube channel. After playing for Delhi Capitals from 2009-13 in the IPL, Warner was bought by SRH in 2014 and stayed with the franchise till 2021.

However, despite winning the 2016 IPL with the franchise as a captain and scoring heaps of runs for the Orange Army, the Aussie experienced an unceremonious exit from the side, which came slowly. First, he was sacked as a captain midway through the 2021 season because of his poor form and frequent losses for SRH. New Zealand batter Kane Williamson replaced him as the captain after Warner lost five out of the first six games of the season.

In the second half of the season, not only Warner was dropped, but also blocked by the franchise on social media. Sadness was visible on Warner’s face, as he even carried drinks for his team during matches. SRH finished at the bottom with three wins and 11 losses. Warner also scored poorly, making just 195 runs in eight innings with two fifties at an average of 24.38 and a sub-par strike rate of just over 107, which is not associated with his more attacking gameplay.

Speaking on Ashwin’s channel, Warner said that the treatment from the team management and him being blocked from social media did hurt him because it was also a “hurt for fans”, something Warner considered really important during his stint with the franchise.

“It did hurt because it was a sense of like hurt for fans. The fans are the most important relationship you could have. The engagement with the fans that I had, with the team had was very good,” Warner said.

“I am not sure why I was blocked. But I did engage with a lot of fans on the social media side for SRH. I did feel it was my duty to engage with the fans, making sure they kept coming back. That is what is most important. But from the blocking point of view, I do not know. I have been sitting on it for about 5 years. It was bizarre. At the end of the day, I still have fans who come onto my page and talk to everyone. So it is great,” he added.

Warner’s stint with SRH made him an IPL legend and possibly the best overseas player to have graced the league. In 95 matches, he scored 4,014 runs at an average of 49.56 and a strike rate of 142.59, with two centuries and 40 fifties. His best score was 126. He not only won an IPL title for his side in 2016 as a skipper, but also won the ‘Orange Cap’ honour for most runs in a season thrice, in 2015, 2017 and 2019, the most by any batter in league history.

Warner was bought by DC ahead of IPL 2022 for Rs 6.25 crore. In 88 matches for DC, Warner has made 2,550 runs at an average of 31.88 and a strike rate of 135.64, with two centuries and 22 fifties. His best score is 109*. However, he has not won any IPL title with DC.

In 2024 season, Warner has scored just 167 runs in seven games at an average of 23.85 and a strike rate of 135.77, with a knock of 52 as his solitary fifty. He is currently out due to a finger injury and his team will play Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Delhi Capitals spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel registered their names in the list of most wickets for the franchise during the clash against Rajasthan Royals in the 56th fixture of the Indian Premier League 2024 on Tuesday. Kuldeep’s game-changing 17th over combined with Mukesh Kumar taking key wickets at the crucial points kept DC alive in their hunt for a spot in the playoffs following their 20-run win over RR at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Where on one side, Kuldeep finished with the figures of 4-0-25-2, Axar bowled three overs took one wicket in his spell of three overs where he conceded 25 runs.

With this Axar bagged 61 wickets and Kuldeep grabbed 45 wicket for the Capitals in the history of the cash-rich league.

The highest wicket-taker for the Delhi-based franchise is veteran leg spinner Amit Mishra with a total of 106 wickets. The other players in the list are Kagiso Rabada (76), Anrich Nortje (60) and Morne Morkel (45).

Coming to the game, RR won the toss and opted to bowl first. Fine half centuries from youngsters Jake Fraser McGurk (50 in 20 balls, with seven fours and three sixes) and Abhishek Porel (63 in 36 balls, with seven fours and three sixes) and an entertaining cameo by Tristan Stubbs (41 in 20 balls, with three fours and three sixes) took DC to 221/8 in their 20 overs.

Ravichandran Ashwin (3/24) was the top bowler for RR.

In the run chase, though RR lost their openers early, skipper Sanju Samson (86* in 46 balls, with eight fours and six sixes), Riyan Parag (27 in 22 balls, with a four and three sixes) and Shubham Dubey (25 in 12 balls with two fours and two sixes) kept RR in hunt but the dismissal of Sanju turned out to be a gamechanger that left RR short of a win.

Kuldeep, Mukesh Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed took two wickets while Axar Patel and Rashikh Dar Salam got one each.

Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will compete at home for the first time in three years after confirming participation in the National Federation Cup to be held in Bhubaneswar from May 12 to 15. The 26-year-old superstar is expected to travel to India from Doha after opening his season in the first leg of the prestigious Diamond League series on May 10. “As per entries @Neeraj_chopra1 and Kishore Kumar Jena will compete in domestic competition starting May 12 in Bhubaneshwar,” the Athletics Federation of India tweeted.

Chopra’s coach Klaus Bartonietz also confirmed to PTI that his ward is taking part in the Bhubaneswar event.

The 28-year-old Kishore Jena, who won a silver in the Hangzhou Asian Games where Chopra won gold, will also be competing in the Doha Diamond League on May 10.

Chopra last took part in a domestic competition at the same event on March 17, 2021, when he won a gold with a throw of 87.80m.

Since then, Chopra has won a historic gold in the Tokyo Olympics, became Diamond League champion in 2022, world champion in 2023 and defended Asian Games gold in China.

He also won three individual legs of Diamond League and claimed a silver in the 2022 World Championships.

He is, however, yet to touch the 90m mark. His personal best and national record is 89.94m.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke does not read much into Rohit Sharma’s string of poor scores, but suggests that the “fatigued” Indian skipper take a break to freshen up ahead of the T20I World Cup. Rohit, who will lead India in the next month’s 20-team global showpiece, has four single-digit scores in his last five outings for his franchise Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL. The 37-year-old has had a busy season this year with an intense five-Test series preceding the IPL for Mumbai Indians, who are all but eliminated from the race to the playoffs this year.

“Rohit, being the wise judge of his own performances, will undoubtedly be disappointed, especially considering his strong start. In my view, he might be feeling a bit fatigued as well,” Clarke told Star Sports.

“A break to freshen up could do wonders for him, but as the Indian captain and a key player for Mumbai Indians, you’re not getting a break. He’s going to have to find form,” Clarke continued.

Rohit played as an impact substitute in their match against Kolkata Knight Riders last week, raising some concerns for the Indian camp.

However, he played a full game against Sunrisers Hyderabad three days later.

Clarke said it is only a matter of time before Rohit gets back to his usual elements as a batter.

“He was in a great mood. He’s happy, which is a really good sign. He doesn’t seem to be struggling with his timing; it’s just a matter of getting out,” he said.

“With someone like Rohit, it’s only a matter of time before he finds his form again. Hopefully, he stresses less and focuses on his game because he’s too talented to keep missing out. He’s at his best when he’s timing the ball, rather than trying to force it,” he added.

Clarke, meanwhile, also had praise in store for Rohit’s deputy for the World Cup and MI skipper Hardik Pandya, who returned with 4-0-31-3 in their seven-wicket win over SRH on Monday.

“In the last couple of games, he’s been taking wickets with his bowling, making some adjustments along the way. For an all-rounder, success in one department boosts confidence across the board,” Clarke said.

“This aspect is crucial for Hardik Pandya’s cricket in any format — he needs to contribute with the ball. Initially, he didn’t bowl as much as expected or desired in the first half of this tournament. However, in the last three or four games, he’s returned to form.” Clarke also said Pandya used his bouncers effectively which is an essential weapon in his armoury.

“He used his bouncer effectively, which I love seeing because it is a strong weapon in his arsenal. He executed the basics flawlessly, which is not only beneficial for Mumbai but also for Indian cricket as a whole, as it will enhance his overall performance,” said Clarke.
