UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is imploring Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday to reconsider
the decision after he announced a military operation in eastern Ukraine.
The head of a global peace organisation asked Putin to end the conflict, regarding which he said “in the name of humanity” to bring back the forces.
“President Putin, in the name of humanity, bring your troops back to Russia,” Guterres said, speaking after an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Ukraine.
Late Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres convened an urgent conference of the UN Security Council,
stating that the day had been full of rumours and indicators that an attack on Ukraine is approaching.
“It is time for restraint, reason and de-escalation. There is no place for actions and statements that would take this dangerous situation over the abyss,”
Thereafter he added, calling for a truce, diplomacy, and negotiations to spare the citizens of Ukraine from the disease of war.
Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a military campaign in eastern Ukraine, the UN head made his remarks.
Missile strikes were launched against Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
In a televised address, he declared, “I have made the decision of a military operation.”

Previously, the Kremlin stated that rebel commanders in eastern Ukraine had requested urgent
Russian assistance in combating what they described as aggressive Ukrainian armed troops.
Afterwards, Putin announced the military action in a public address, US President Joe Biden, together with the UN Secretary-General, warned of a catastrophic loss of life.
