On Friday, the United Nations Security Council voted on a drafted resolution proposed by the United States and Albania and approved by Poland, Italy, Germany, Estonia, Luxembourg, and New Zealand.
Eleven countries voted in support of the proposal, with three countries abstaining, including India, China and the UAE.
Following that, T S Tirumurti, India’s UN envoy, delivered an explanation of vote (EOV)
that explained India’s position on the issue. Presently, India advocated for a resort to diplomacy and respect for states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity in its EOV.
“It is a matter of regret that the path of diplomacy was given up. We must return to it. For all these reasons, India has chosen to abstain on this resolution,” he added.
Delivered strong remarks against Russia’s activities but stopped short of voting against
it as it strives to strike a firm diplomatic equilibrium on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said “India is deeply disturbed by recent turn of developments in Ukraine.
We urge that all efforts are made for the immediate cessation of violence and hostilities. No solution can ever be arrived at the cost of human lives.”
All member states should honour principles of international law and UN Charter, as these provide a constructive way forward,” said India,
Regarding the resolution,thus Russia has vetoed the drafted UN Security Council resolution condemning Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and calling for its soldiers to leave immediately.
According to the envoy, India has been in talks with all parties involved urging, them to proceed towards the negotiations.
The urgent priority is the wellbeing and safety of the Indian community, particularly trapped students and their departure from Ukraine.
