Kerala Tourism has entrusted the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) with the task of executing a ₹2.97 crore beach circuit on Vypeen island, linking Kuzhipilly, Cherai, and Munambam beaches.

The long-awaited circuit was initially proposed in 2017 as part of a broader plan to promote beach tourism in Ernakulam district. The three beaches are being developed as part of a ₹4.50 crore project aimed at augmenting infrastructure at a total of nine beaches along a 25-km corridor, from Puthu Vypeen at one end to Munambam on the Ernakulam–Thrissur border, tourism sources said.

They attributed the delay to issues related to obtaining Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearances and other technical reasons. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance the experience for tourists visiting beaches in Ernakulam district, especially as sea incursion has reduced the appeal of Fort Kochi beach.

As part of developing the beach circuit, the Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company (KEL), which will execute the project, will renovate the existing infrastructure. In addition, toilets, rain shelters, snack kiosks and a children’s play area will be constructed. Work at Cherai beach began a week ago, it is learnt.

Tourists, including those from other States, continue to throng Cherai beach despite sea erosion caused by factors such as climate change, said Lijo Jose, secretary of Ernakulam DTPC. “Being a recently developed beach, Kuzhipilly stands out due to the many casuarina trees along the beachfront and a floating bridge. It has thus become a popular spot for photo shoots. Members of the local community and the panchayat have been wholeheartedly extending their cooperation to ensure the upkeep of the beach,” he said.

Munambam, as the name suggests, is an estuary. Apart from watersports activities, the walkway, Chinese fishing nets and the harbour here attract a large number of visitors. Once infrastructure is augmented, the beach circuit is expected to revitalise these destinations and bring a new vibrancy. Walkways will also be illuminated as part of the project. The works covering the three beaches are expected to be completed by February 2027. To ensure the safety of visitors, lifeguards have already been deployed at Munambam and Cherai, along with lifesaving equipment, Mr. Jose added.
